The pool pump is the heart of your above ground pool; it ensures your water stays healthy by moving it through your filter and chlorinator. Having the wrong pump can mean your pool water will get cloudy, green, and nasty. In this guide, we'll walk you through on how to size your above ground pool pump.

Step by Step

Step 1

Sizing above ground pool pumps is much simpler than their inground counterparts. Above ground pool pumps are generally below the waterline thereby gravity fed, with minimal plumbing between it and its suction ports. The simplicity the pool’s plumbing allows you to size the pump by pool size alone (most times.)

Step 2

Round Pools: The chart shows the normal manufacturer pump sizing recommendations for pool sizes. The horsepower overlaps on the “tweener” sized pools 15’ is a small to medium, and 27’ is medium to large.

Ranges:
  • ¾ Horsepower: 8’ to 15’ Round
  • 1 Horsepower: 15’ to 24’ Round
  • 1-1/2 Horsepower: 24’ to 36’ Round

Step 3

Oval Pools: Similar to the round pools, the horsepower recommendations overlap for some models. If your pool falls in one of these overlap areas, then consider how much swimmer traffic you expect. Light to moderately used pools, choose the lower HP, for higher swimmer loads, choose the step up.

Ranges:
  • ¾ Horsepower: 12’ X 17’ to 12’ X 24’
  • 1 Horsepower: 12’ X 24’ to 15’ X 27’
  • 1-1/2 Horsepower: 15’ X 27’ to 18’ X 33’

Step 4

Reasons to step up horsepower: Longer than standard plumbing lines and/or pool accessories may require you to make the jump to the next highest horsepower to ensure proper flow rates. Common causes for larger pumps
  • Suction line from the skimmer to pump is longer than 15-feet
  • You’re planning to use a suction cleaner, e.g. the Hayward Navigator, The Pool Cleaner, and Kreepy Krauly
  • Adding solar panels, especially ones mounted on roofs or fences increase the strain on the pump, requiring extra HP oomph

Kristi - When you first install a sand filter, you should rinse the new sand to remove the fine sand particles and dust in the sand. Most of that may be at the bottom of the pool now. Try vacuuming it out to waste. If that isn't the issue, check to ensure that the spider gasket on your multiport valve is good. Then if you still have to replace your system, look at our guide for upgrading an Index Pool Pump and Filter System for an inexpensive pump/filter replacement.

Hi. We just bought a pool. all is great but when we backwash sand comes back into the pool. It is a 24 foot round pool. So have been looking into getting another pump and filter set up but there is so much to look at and I don't understand what one is the other. Would you have a suggestion? Thank You!

Joey - You are right at the break. For pools 24' and below we usually recommend a 1 HP Power Flo Matrix pump for Hayward with a Perflex EC50C DE filter if you are going with DE. With your size pool, I would recommend the larger EC50C filter.

My pump just went out. Pool size is 24 ft round and 52' deep. I had a Hayward 1.5 hp pump with the E200 series filter system. Both are 11 yrs old. I am going to replace the entire system and looking at the Hayward Perplex DE system. What size of HP pump do I need? Should I get the EC40 or the EC50?

Pump Upgrade - Generally the hoses to an above ground pool pump and filter are a standard 1 1/4" of 1 1/2". So you can generally use the same hoses as is or with a simple adapter. If you are going to get a larger pump you will probably need to get a larger filter. They usually come in a set. See response to Amy D below for one suggestion.

Amy D - Yes a good 1/2 HP pump will work. If you haven't already bought a filter/pump set, look at Game's SandPro 50 Pool Filter System (4510). It is durable and well priced and it has fittings especially designed to adapt to Intex hoses. I just replaced an Intex filter/pump system with a Game system and installation was easy.

tom61 - I would recommend a combo like Hayward's 1 HP Power Flo Matrix pump and Pro Series S180T filter - part #S180T92S or part #S180T92SFT if you want to include a timer.

nancy - Your pool has about 14,000 gallons of water in it. You could go either way between 1 HP and 1 1/2 HP. I would use a 1 HP pump to save on operational costs.

cline79 - Your 24' x 48' above ground pool contains 30,000 gallons of water. We recommend a 1.5 HP pump/ filter set like Hayward's 1.5 HP Power Flow Matrix / S210T Pro Series Filter. The hole sizes are fairly standard but if they don't match up to the pump/filter hoses, you can buy fittings to adapt them.

elizabethgaris - A 15' x 24' x 48" has about 9,000 gallons in it. A 1 HP pump (or motor) would work fine with that size pool and filter. You can generally get by with just replacing the motor and possibly the impeller.

Hi I got a 15 X 24 by 48 in above ground pool that I bought used and the previous owner didn't disclose anything..shocker!! Anyway my pump died and I need a new one. It had a pentair 1.5 HP with a hayward 300 lb sand filter. I need to get a new pump and was wondering if a 1 HP would be sufficient for the filter or do I need something bigger? Thanks for the help.
Sincerely,
A frustrated pool momma!

We have a Hayward Perflex EC50C DE filter, and a 21' round above ground pool. The filter is in excellent shape, but the set-up is 18 years old, and we now need to replace only the pool pump and motor. Can you recommend a specific model for replacement?

Thanks!

PoolOwnerT - We usually recommend an S-180T for the Hayward Pro Series Filter for your size pool, so you might be a little undersized on your current filter. DE does clean out more of the smaller particles than sand. For DE in Hayward use Perflex EC50C. One other possibility, make sure an animal hasn't chewed a hole in one of your return pipes - especially if the dirt is consistently coming out of one return.

Shelly - For a 15' round pool we usually recommend a filter size comparable to the Hayward S166T or a Pentair Clean & Clear 50 sq ft filter.

I have a Haywood S-166T Sand filter for a 24' above ground pool. I changed the sand last year as well as the valve gasket (entire top part of filter) because dirt kept coming back through the return after vacuuming. I also replaced the pump 2 years ago. It worked for a little while, now this year I'm opening up my pool and once again the dirt is returning to the pool through the return. I'm wondering if I should replace the entire filter and if so should I switch over to DE, as both my neighbors and mother-in-law have DE and haven't had a problem. Thanks

side of the hill pool - If your pump is placed above the surface of the water, it will have to be self priming to pull the water up to the pump.

Would like to switch to a better pump but not shure about how to determine which pump/filter and what size pump/filter to convert to. Any suggestions?
