Why Do Pool & Spa Lights Use 12-Volt Transformers?

The primary concern with any electrical equipment near water is the risk of electric shock. Lowering the voltage to 12 volts significantly reduces this risk compared to higher-voltage systems, which is ideal in a pool where people are near water.

Some state or local ordinances may require installing new pool lights to be 12-volt; this is especially true for commercial applications. Please check local code requirements before installing a new light.

How Big of a 12-Volt Transformer Do I Need?

Each 12-volt transformer is rated by its watts capacity; it can handle any combination of equipment types as long as its totaled wattage is equal to or less than the rated wattage.

For example, a Pureline Pureoclors LED replacement pool light bulb has a 35-watt rating, and the Purecolors spa version has a 6-watt rating. That means an Intermatic 100-Watt 12-Volt Transformer - PX100 can accept up to 2 LED pool lights and 3 LED spa lights.
