Why does an above ground mesh cover require a special winterizing kit?

This closing kit is not for above ground winter covers, but instead it is designed for an inground pool mesh safety cover. The porousness of mesh safety covers allows dirt, water, and sunlight to pass through its weave. Left to sit in a pool for months, all those factors can create a green stew that makes opening your pool the next year a lot harder. This chemical kit is meant to help reduce the strain of the following pool season's opening

Closing the pool this Fall.

Written on 10/2/2020 by Guest

I have watched the pool closing service for several years... and wanted to save some money, so I decided I could Do It Myself. First I had to purchase a small tankless compressor from Harbor Freight (less than $30). Then I purchase the winterization closing chemicals from Inyo Pools. The price at Inyo was $20 below my local pool store. Inyo Pools instructions for dispensing the winterization closing chemicals was very complete and easy to follow. I then removed the pressure gauge from the Multi-Valve and screwed in the compressor hose. With the Multi-Valve on Filter, I turned on the compressor with all intake valve (skimmers and center drain open) and all output valves (return lines) open. The compressor work on the basis of least resistance. The open valve skimmer/main drain and or returns with the least amount of resistance will be first to push all the water out and "blow the line". As each line is blown you cap with a ballast for skimmers and plugs for the returns. Close the respective valve back at the pump. Once all skimmers and returns are blown, capped, and valves closed the main drain will be the last to blow. Turn off the compressor, close valve to the main drain. Unscrew the compressor, remove the Multi-vale spy glass, remove the pump plug and filter drain cap, remove other plugs as necessary (e.g., heater, automatic chlorinator, Multi-Valve spy glass). Disconnect pump power cord and ground wire, loosen goose neck coupling to the Multi-Valve and the pump intake coupling entering the pump. You should now be able to remove the pump from the pool filter, bring inside for winter storage. Insert a rubber cork in the main intake line as extra precaution to keep the main drain from filling with water over the winter. The air pressure in the main drain line keeps the water from entering the main drain line, so it is important to keep the main drain line sealed at the pump end. If you have a heater, you must also disconnect the heater's pressure valve. In a Hayward heater the pressure valve is located behind the top panel. Place plugs, cap, Multi-Valve pressure gauge & spy glass in the pump basket.
