Do you need to empty sand to install? I think this is what needs replacing, it's leaking.

No you would not need to empty the sand to install. This a common part which goes bad, so this most likely is your problem.

Deb, The drain assembly is threaded. You simply unthread the old one and install the new one.

Had Extreme problem getting the threads to line up. Finally went to old one and put screen from new onto old and then was able to screw into filter tank
