I'm switching from a 1 hp motor to a 1/2 hp motor. What is the difference between his impeller and my 1 hp impeller and what would prevent me from using the 1 hp impeller with my new motor?

They are of different sizes. The motor is dependent on the impeller. So if you have the wrong size impeller on your pump compared to the HP of your motor it will not perform well or maybe at all. So the life of your motor will not last and the performance of your pool pump will not work properly.
