My spring/door broke, can I simply unscrew my old unit and screw this one in it's place?

Hi Brad, You can remove the broken water gate by unscrewing it from the wall fitting and screw in the new one into that same wall fitting.

What does a watergate do? I need the part that connects the hose to the suction hole in the scupper (leaf basket compartment).

Hello Larry, the water gate is a screw in attachment on a suction port on the wall of your pool (if applicable) This part allows you to connect your vacuum hose to the suction port. Not all pools are built with this feature. You may find what you are looking for on the Vacuum Hose Repair page.

I have a suction port with this Water Gate in it that is unused. I would prefer to put a flush plug in the port. What size flush plug will fit?

Hi, Marty. You can use P/N SP1022B as a flush plug once you've uninstalled this Water Gate Fitting.
