I went to replace my mechanical seals due to a leak at the bottom of the pump / motor, but could NOT get the left-handed screw from the center of the shaft to remove the impeller. After trying lubricant, WD-40, etc. I was still unable to remove the impeller, so I asked for assistance from the great people at INYOPools.com. My question was, "Could I just cut the impeller carefully around the screw". They said to give it a try. I used an oscillating multi-tool with a half-circle blade for metal. Then, I carefully made a few cuts around the screw, then removed the excess plastic. Make sure to go very carefully so as not to cut anything other than the impeller. Once the excess was removed I was left with square shaped plastic around the stubborn screw. I then put some locking pliers on the plastic and screw and gave it a turn. It was off! Sure saved me a lot of headache and I was then able to replace the mechanical seals and now my leak is gone!
