How does the Coverfree work in the swimming pool?
Reply
Coverfree creates an invisible barrier that helps retain heat in the swimming pool similar to a solar blanket. Surface tension allows it to remain in place or reform during swimming.

Pool is no longer used. No longer heated. Interested in saving water. How often should I add Cover Free to the pool. Or do you recommed a blanket?

I have a salt pool here in SW Florida. We can use our pool all year round so it's important to stop rapid evaporation in our dry season. It's also important to stop heat loss at night. We do get some cold nights.
I started using Natural Chemistry Cover Free a few years ago. I do not use it during the warm rainy months, no need, so I start putting in the pool around the end of October. I've found it works to stop the "steaming" loss of pool water and heat. You put it in while it's steaming and as it spreads you can watch that steaming stop. Love the product. Note it works better as the weeks progress after the initial weekly application.

Natural Chemistry Cover Free appears to aid in mitigating water evaporation from swimming pools. It won't eliminate it totally but it will slow the process down a bit. The cost of the 1 gallon container from INYO is very reasonable. You'll have to determine for yourself if the added cost to your water bill for re-filling your pool is more than the cost of this product. If so, it's definitely worth it. A capful or two once a week is all it takes. I add it directly to the skimmer basket but it can be spread on the surface of the pool. If your evaporation appears excessive, you may want to do a bucket test to determine if you have a leak. Skimmer areas are a good first place to check.

(1 out of 5 stars) Natural Chemistry Cover Free is NOT for Arizona
Reviewed By: Inyo Customer ()
I am located in Southern Arizona. Evaporation is a major cost here as we can lose one to one and a half inches daily. I inquired InyoPools support team for a recommendation to an alternative to solar blanket to keep from losing so much water due to evaporation. The solar blankets definitely reduce the evaporation but in turn heat the water to unusable temps. The support team recommended Natural Chemistry Cover Free. I have used it as recommended for two weeks at this point but have not realized any reduction in water loss. I am sure it is due to the extreme heat and lack of humidity here in Southern Arizona. I am not complaining about the product simply warning anyone else that it is not effective for evaporation in Arizona.

(2 out of 5 stars) Not For Indoor Pools
Reviewed By: Inyo Customer ()
I have an indoor pool with a cartridge type filter system and tried the product for 4 weeks and saw no change in evap or temp stability. I also had the head pressure go up on my pump system and had to hose off to get the pump pressure back to normal. My conclusion was this is not for indoor pools or Cartridge Filter systems. Looks like I wasted $65.00, Allen

This product stops loss of water due to evaporation. He keeps the temperature of the water up over the cold nights. We got down to the 40's last night here in SW Florida and my pool only dropped about 3 or 4 degrees.

(5 out of 5 stars) I like it
Reviewed By: SACVET from Melbourne Fl. ()
Pros: Easy to use, does not hinder pool use in any way.
Cons: I have not found any cons yet.
I have been using Cover Free for over 3 years. While it is difficult to precisely measure the results I, and 2 other friends, believe it does help with temperature retention and evaporation loss. It is now mid March and using only solar heating my pool is already averaging about 83 degrees.

(3 out of 5 stars) Liquid Cover
Reviewed By: Richard F. from Henderson, NV ()
Pros: Easy to use, no pool cover to deal with
Cons: Doesn't really work that well and impossible to determine actual benefit.
I feel it is hard to determine how much water I may have saved over the last 4 months and how much heat the LiquidCover actually retains. I live in Las Vegas and we've had a fairly cool summer. We also had to coldest May on record. The chemical really didn't hold heat much in May, but I have seen a little retention in July when I had to heat the pool and noticed a fair portion of the heat retained overnight. No where near the retention of my pool cover I had in previous years, but a lot less hassle. I'll try it a while longer, but do not plan to use it in winter. Next year we're planning to install solar heat panels or check out pool rings.

(4 out of 5 stars) Solves summer pool temp problem
Reviewed By: mountainman3520 from Morgan Hill, CA ()
Pros: adds ~5degF, easy to apply, avoids plastic cover
Cons: expensive, wind decreases effectiveness
Plastic covers are terrible, especially if there is even a slight amount of wind. This chemical cover gets my pool to 78-82degF, warm enough to enjoy. Otherwise its 68-72 which is just too cold. I recommend it but not in consistently windy areas or with infinity pools because these stop this from working.

(5 out of 5 stars) Simple and Effective Heat Cover
Reviewed By: Robert C. from Hamden, CT ()
Pros: Easy, Effective, Cheap
Cons: Some prefer the old roll out solar cover, not us!
We have been using the competing product called "Solar Pill" for years, and have been very pleased with the product. About a year ago someone told us of Cover Free. We bought a bottle to try it. We like the weekly dose process of Cover Free and feel it is more effective than a monthly Solar Pill. We simply add 5 to 6 ozs of Cover Free each week and it keeps our pool temperatures up. Buying by the gallon instead of quart makes Cover Free not only a more effective option for us but now a cheaper one too! Very Happy. If you aren't sure, buy a quart instead of a gallon and try it! Nothing to lose and we are thrilled.

(5 out of 5 stars) works very well

Pros: nothing in the pool to get stuck or clog cleaners or have the kids toss around like a toy
Cons: none
I have tried the solar fish which my pool cleaner gets stuck on, then the ball which never worked well since I had to drain it myself. this stuff works great, just add some every week and the pool stays much warmer than without. I have a heater and at the end of the season during the night I can see steam coming off the pool.. that when I know it's time to add more. Once I add it the steam goes away :)

(5 out of 5 stars) Works as described
Reviewed By: Terry A. from Scottsdale AZ ()
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: No measurement graduations on bottle
I have used products similar before, (solar ball, solar fish, etc.) but this one is much easier to use. It does reduce evaporation and help retain water temp, especially in Arizona where I live. Don't expect it to be effective as a solar cover, but this is the easiest way to go. Worth the money. Wish there would have been measurement graduations on the bottle though.

(5 out of 5 stars) Great liquid solar cover
Reviewed By: Pam C. from Oxford, MI ()
We used this product last summer for the first time and now would not go back to a regular solar cover again. Using this product reduces heat loss as well as water evaporation, which saves on chlorine as well. Without the need for the regular solar cover our pool stayed far cleaner than any previous season. I would highly recommend this product.
