I'm looking for pool shock to sanitize my drinking water. Will this work?
Reply
I have heard of people using pool shock to sanitize drinking water but I can not promote the use of any pool shock for this purpose. You will want to contact the NSF for further information.

Can I add shock through my automatic chlorinator?
Reply
No, you should never add shock through an automatic chlorinator. Never mix different types of chlorine. Pool shock can be added to a bucket of water and poured directly into the swimming pool.

I have an in ground pool with a mesh winter cover. Several weeks ago, I had added 2 gallons of chlorine to the pool. Since then, with the mesh cover still on, the water has turned green. I've been adding about a gallon of shock each week without improvement. Should I continue adding shock to the pool or should I wait?
Reply
I would recommend waiting until the pump and filter are running again before adding any more shock to the pool. Algae needs two things to grow: food and light. With a mesh winter cover, the algae has more than enough light to grow regardless of the shock that you're putting in. Also, shocking the pool without circulation can cause bleaching of the pool surface

I made sure that the pool pump was on high and was running well. I cleaned the pool walls and brushed the algae to the deep end of the pool. I cut open twelve bags of Power Blast Pool Shock, empty the contents in a bucket and spread the Shock over the pool water. While everything was working, I used my brush to clean the steps in the pool and re-brushed the walls and bottom again.

A ladder to stand on to brush the pool sides down.
Opened the pool and my son vacuumed the crud to waste. I added my stabilizer and let that filter for 48 hours. I brushed down the walls of the pool and added two pounds of Power Blast Shock to my pool and Super Algaecide, approximately 6 ounces and let filter for another 48 hours. Then I backwashed the system to clear the algae and rinsed the sand in the filter. It's been kind of cold here so I haven't been able to get in and vacuum yet, but there is very little left in the center of the pool to vacuum up. So the steps went into the pool yesterday and I will shock it again this evening and let filter again for 24 hours. I will vacuum, backwash, check the levels to make sure I'm oaky and then put the solar blanket on for the next couple weeks.

I had a high combined chlorine count after having the test run locally at a hardware store. I use this product and it worked fantastically. I did dissolve it in a pill first but it says about 15 minutes and poured directly into the pool.

Once I uncovered my pool the water was a nasty green and full of leaves. When I first used the shock all of the leaves on the bottom came to the top, making scooping a breeze. Now the water is clean and ready to go.

I got rid of my old Chlorinator and installed a Rainbow 300-19 in it's place. I also switched from my old Shock and started using Robarb Power Blast Shock that I purchased from inyopools.com, the same place that I got the new Chlorinator from. PROBLEM SOLVED! I keep the Chlorinator on 1, and when the chlorine get's a little weak, after a week or so, I broadcast 1 bag of shock over the deep end of my pool and it snaps the chlorine right back to where it should be.

After going through a few different types of shock, I tried Power Blast Shock (68% Cal. Hypo.) that I purchased from inyopools.com. The Power Blast Shock is the best that I've used so far. One 1 lb. bag a week in my pool and it keeps my weekly chlorine reading right on the money. I don't believe that I'll be experimenting with different shocks anymore. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I used it and the Pool was crystal clear but had a white residue that needed to be vacuumed. to prevent this I used an empty Bleach bottle poured half the contents in and added pool water to dissolve the chemicals before spreading them into the pool this reduced the white residue but I still had to vacuum the pool before use.

Pros: great chlorine release, no stabilzer

Fantastic slight slow release chlorine granules without stabilizer! I tend to get over stabilized when using stabilized granules alone (tri-chlor). These are the perfect supplement that aren't stabilized. No more liquid chlorine!!

Pros: Great for disinfecting drinking water in a pinch
This is a fine pool product. But in a pinch, you can also use it to disinfect drinking water. If you have a natural disaster in your area, and your local water system shuts down or is compromised, good drinking water is gone very quickly. With this product, you can make 10,000 gallons drinkable. Help friends and neighbors in an emergency.
