What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I will be buying this motor, but I don't see a go-kit for a 3/4 HP motor. What should I by??

Hello Alicia. The motor you are looking at can fit on many different pump models. The GO-KITs are determined by the make and model of pump the motor is going on. If you can get us that information, we can get the right GO-KIT for you.

I just installed a brand new motor. After running for about 5 mins., I could smell the motor and the housing was very hot to the touch! I turned the pump off right away! Is this normal?
Reply
Hi Stephen. A running motor that is too hot to touch is not necessarily overheating. If the automatic protector is not tripping and the actual running amps do not exceed the maximum amps on the nameplate, the motor is not overheating. However, you should still check the conditions that make a motor overheat. For example, the supply voltage to your motor may be too low due to power company power demands or inadequate wire size between the breaker box and the pump . See our guide on "How To Troubleshoot a Pool Pump Motor - Motor Overheated" for more information.

What is the GPM of this model?
Reply
The GPM is not solely determined by the motor. This motor is used on several pumps and this will cause the GPM to change. You will have to look at the power curve of your pump. This will give you the GPM rating.
Reply
How do you change wiring in motor from 115V service to 230V service?
Reply
If you are wiring for 115V, the three wires to the pool pump will be black, white and green. Attach the white wire to terminal 1 of Line 1 (L1). Attach the black wire to terminal 3 of Line 2 (L2). Attach the green wire under the Ground screw (GND). The black plug is shifted in position so the the black wire is attached to terminal 4 Line 2 (L2) and the white wire is attached to terminal 5. Note: in this position the white arrow on top of the 2 prong black plug is pointing at the 115V label.

Hello, In order to determine the correct tune-up kit for your PUMP I will need to know what pump you have. If you can provide the pump manufacturer and model information, located on the wet end of the pump that the motor attaches to.

Hello,
6 years ago I replace my 1 hp motor with a 3/4 hp motor in order reduce electric use.
Recently the filter/pump does not want to prime.
I was going to replace the motor with a 1 hp unit.
should I consider a 1.5 hp unit instead?
Reply
It's all going to depend on if your filter can handle the increase flow rate. Let's try to get to the problem of why your pump isn't priming before anything. What model is your pump.

What is the GPM (gallons per minute) rating for this motor when used with a Sta-Rite P2RA5D-124 pump? I am considering a pool water sanitizing system that requires a minimum GPM. Thanks in advance.

I apologize for the delayed response. The flow rate is going to depend on not only the horsepower, but also the total resistance or the distance in feet from the pump to the main drain. With that information I'll be able to tell you what the flow rate for that pump is.

Hello Teri, yes that USQ1072 matches the C48J2PA105 model number. To find out what seal kit you would need, we would need to know the model of the pump which is either located on the side of the basket housing or on the front of housing (where the basket and lid are).

It appears my pump is leaking, what is a possible reason.
Reply
It is very likely you have a bad pump/shaft seal if water is leaking from where the motor mounts to the back of the pump. Worn or stretched out o-rings can also be a cause of a leak.
Reply
The back bottom cover of the motor has completely rusted away. Can I just replace the cover or do you think there is a water leak?

Hello Mark- The correct replacement motor for your motor model #C48D62A04 is the 3/4 HP EE Full Rate Single Speed Motor (B661, B2661). Although the USQ1072 has the same square flange facing, the frame and additional motor ratings are different. I would not recommend replacing your motor with the USQ1072.

My filtration system requires a 3/4 HP motor. I used to have a 2 HP pump prior to this one, which did the same thing. Would there be any advantage to get a motor that is higher rated than the 3/4 HP motor? I am having trouble getting the water to flow when I start the pump. This is because the water in my elevated spa drains down ~ 5 inches overnight. I have to add water back to the spa to get the pump to pump water. Would a higher HP motor help get the water moving without refilling the spa?
Without knowing all of the building specifications on your pool then it is tough to say if you can use a 3/4 hp motor however, please view our "How To Determine Why a Pool Pump Won't Prime" guide which may assist you with troubleshooting why your pool pump is having a hard time starting to pump. The fact that your spa drains a few inches when the pump shuts down should not be a reason as to why the pump has issues getting started.
