What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.
Reply
What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

I have a Hayward Tristar pump with a A.O.Smith Century Centurion 1081 pool pump Duty SP1620Z1BNSC motor. I need to order a new Capacitor for it; as I suspect it is bad. I am out of town for a few more days but my wife says the pump won't start and it makes a humming or buzz sound;this was after she said the breaker had already popped. Which Capacitor will I have to order? I will only be home for 1 day before going out of town for another week. Thanks for the information.

This is my first time ordering a motor for the pool. I found the model/part # SP1620-Z-1-BNSC, A.O. SMITH. I see a pump that you have that is similar to the specs, but how do I know if it is a square or round flange?
Reply
Hello, Based on the model number, this would be the correct motor. As for the flange, if you look at you motor label, you will see an "FR" listed. If it is 56J, it is a round flange. If it is a 56Y or 48Y, it is a square flange. *Please note that this does not apply to an above ground pool pump with a Flex 48Y frame which is a round flange.

Hi, Eldon. The USN1202 motor is the correct direct replacement. You will also need to replace the pump shaft seal along with the pump o-rings. They are listed on the Hayward Northstar Pump Parts Diagram page.

Since I live in CA., I cant use the SN 1202 replacement . What do you recommend for a replacement motor and would like to go with a VS motor,
Preferably a Hayward Brand, that is CA. compliant.

Hi Greg, Unfortunately, there is not a Variable Speed Replacement Motor for the Hayward Northstar. If you want to go with Hayward then the Hayward Ecostar Variable Speed 2.7 HP would be comparable to the output of your Northstar. You might also consider the PureLine Prime 2.7 HP Variable Speed Pump this uses a Century Motor (Formerly A.O. Smith) which is the same motor which is used on the Hayward Pumps and is of very good quality.

I have a Northstar 2 HP pump with a 3/4 HP impeller installed that lasted 15 years with only a start capacitor replacement. I read all the hundreds of negative comments about Hayward variable speed pump motor and circuit board failures after only 2 years, so I decided to simply replace the motor.on my current pump. Is the SN1202 the correct choice and what seal would I need for a salt chlorine generator system? Any other parts needed? I have attached a picture of the motor label.
Yes, the SN1202 is the is the correct replacement motor for your 7-193223-03, Hayward NorthStar. The NorthStar does not have a gasket kit, so you would have the buy them separately off this parts list: Hayward NorthStar SP4000 Series Pump (1998-2007). The shaft seal (key 10) is the tricky part, because you need to verify if the pump was manufactured before or after 2003 to get the right shaft seal, or you would need to purchase an impeller kit listed under key 17.

Hello. I would like to to know what motor to purchase for a replacement. It is for a Hayward Northstar Pool Pump. It is emitting a loud, swirling sound. Thank you!
Hi Gus, the correct replacement motor for your motor part number 186512 is part number 5112-064. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.
