What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?
 Reply

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

No this is not the replacement for the 177474-01. You would require this B2853 Replacement Motor as the replacement to your 177474-01 motor.

Afternoon, After 17 years of use, my pool pump gave out at the end of the 2019. Old pump is A.O.Smith Part # 7-186236-28 (see photo) with your guide suggests part number B2846, but I noticed a recommendation for a more efficient pump, part B2845. I want to ensure B2845 is compatible for my use. Also, plan on ordering GoKIT32Salt. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jay

A  Answered on 4/9/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

Hi Jay, Everything you have mentioned is spot on. The B2846 Motor is the direct replacement for the motor in your photo however you can go with this B2845 Motor as a replacement as well and it is more energy-efficient. The B2845 draws 4.4 amps at 230V and 8.8 amps at 115V where the B2846 draws 5.4 amps at 230V and 10.8 amps at 115V. Yes, you will need the GOKIT32SALT Seal Kit when you replace your motor. All of these items are currently in stock ready to ship!

60797166-1 After several attempts, once the motor/mating ring and impeller is assembled, the impeller torques too tight and motor stops. On viewing the original motor shaft and new shaft, the shafts appear different. What is your suggestion for a solution? Thank you, Jay

Hello I have a Pentair WFE-2 / 011511 that I need to get replaced, can you help me find a direct replacement.

Yes, so the single sped replacement motor will be the model B852 that you can view by clicking here and the seal kit for a chlorine pool is the GOKIT32 that you can view by clicking here, or for a saltwater pool, it will be the GOKIT32SALT that you can view by clicking here

Hi Angelo, Yes this B855 Motor is a direct replacement motor for your WFE-2 Whisperflo Pump. You will also require this Whisperflo Seal Kit when replacing your motor. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

Can this motor (56Y) replace a 48Y frame motor on a Max-E-Flo?
 Reply

A  Answered on 11/2/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Hi Marc, could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Please take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation.

I've decided that, even though the 56Y and 48Y frame motors are both used on versions of the Max-E-Flo pumps (and share the same part number), I should probably stick to the same frame size when replacing the motor. 1 less thing to go wrong.

Why is this motor not CA Title 20 compliant? THP is below 1, unless I am missing something…
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/6/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

According to Section 1605.3(g)(5) of California’s Appliance Efficiency Regulation, California requires pool pump motors with a total horsepower rating greater than .75 must operate at two or more speeds.  Although the labeled horsepower of this motor is only 1/2 HP, the total horsepower (see our article on Are All Motors Created Equal? to learn about full rated/uprated and service factor for motors) is .95 so it is not Title 20 Compliant.

  • Commented on 1/6/2022 by Product Owner

This seems inconsistent to me. I thought the Title 20 limit was 1 thp, not .75 thp. If what you are saying is true, then why is this pump motor compliant? (As it is .98 thp) https://www.inyopools.com/Products/00200017039445.htm

Hello, TC. We apologize for the delay in the reply back. Yes, the Century 1/2 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2845 is complaint with the total HP of 0.95THP. We are currently working on correcting any inconsistencies.

Hello Jim, the replacement motor for your Pentair Whisperflo pump motor part number 177451 is the motor model B842. We also recommend replacing the seals and gaskets when replacing a pump motor. The seal kit for your pump is the GOKIT32 for a standard chlorine swimming pool and the GOKIT32SALT for a saltwater swimming pool. Here is our "How To Replace A Pentair Whisperflo Pump Motor" guide that should assist with that process.
