What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I need to replace my whisperflo 7-186236-20 motor. I saw a suggestion for the B846, B2846 but it is only 1/2 HP. Mine is 3/4 HP. DO YOU HAVE THE EXACT SAME SPECIFICATIONS BUT FOR A 3/4 Hp motor?

Hi Chester, The 1/2 HP Pentair OEM Motor (355018S) will have to be special ordered but the B846 is an aftermarket replacement which can be used as a replacement. We also recommend that you replace the seals which are all listed on the Pentair Superflo Parts page.

My 11 year old Pentair WFE-2 runs a water feature 12 hrs/day. It won't start anymore, just hums & gets hot. I replaced the starter /run capacitor & it still won't start. It had the same problem a couple of years ago & I replaced the cap and it ran flawlessly until now. Can't spin the shaft w/ my fingers anymore but I can start it with a wrench on the shaft & it runs all day. Sounds normal but won't restart by itself. Is this repairable or do I need a new motor, if so, which one. See pics.
Hi, Casey. It sounds like you will need to replace the motor this time. The B2854 along with the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT are the parts you'll need to get your pump running again.

is this b2846 compatible with my whisperflow wfe-2

Hi, Jim. This B2846 can be used, however, the B2845 is the direct replacement which is an energy efficient motor. The Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT is also recommended when replacing the motor.

I was wondering if this is what I need to get my solar going again. Pump model PE5C-180L and motor model K48J2PA105C1? PLEASE HELP dont know where else to check
Obviously this is the correct motor. Can you direct me to the proper diffuser & seals/gasket kit? Thank you
Hi Gary, yes this is the correct replacement motor. You appear to have the Ultra Flo Pool Pump and you will require this Ultra Flo Seal Kit. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

Thanks Patrick! It is in fact an ultra flo pump & I’m seeing now it’s discontinued. If I was to replace both now what is a comparable drop-in replacement that you would you recommend?
Reply
Hi Gary, Unfortunately there is not a drop-in replacement so you will have a little re-plumbing. If you wanted to go with a single speed pump then I would suggest this Waterway 3/4 HP Champion Pump If you wanted to go with something super energy efficient then I would suggest this 1.4 HP Waterway Variable Speed Pump Here is an article we wrote on the Energy Savings of a Single Speed Pool Pump Vs. a Variable Speed Pool Pump.

Is this the correct replacement? if so what kit would i need for this?
The exact replacement for your current motor (7-177449-03) is the Century 3/4 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2661. The necessary gasket kit for the Pentair / Purex Whisperflo is the GOKIT32 or the GOKIT32SALT

Hi. Is this the replacement motor I need? I have Part No.. 7-177449-03 and it needs replaced. It's 1/2 HP and 1.9 SF. Also, when replacing, what other parts are needed? Help.
Hello Tina. The Century 1/2 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2846 is the direct motor replacement for the motor, part number 7-177449-03. The beige-colored motor identifies the pump as a Pentair Pool Product. The Pentair Pool Products models WhisperFlo WFE-2 and SuperFlo 348021 were manufactured with the 177449 motor. A visual comparison would identify the correct model. The Whisperflo - GOKIT32 or SuperFlo - GOKIT78 contains the necessary motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring to complete the motor replacement.

I'm in California. We have a WFE-2 running our spa circulation system. It has a Century B2846 motor on it now (see attached).
Is the B2846 CA title 20 compliant?
What would be a suitable variable speed motor replacement, that is Title 20 compliant? Thank you!
Hello Michael. The Century 1/2 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2846 is listed as being California Title 20 Compliant. The V-Green 1.65 HP Square Flange 48Y Variable Speed Motor - ECM16SQU would be a compatible variable speed motor replacement, although the horsepower rating is greater. The Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32 contains the seals and gaskets necessary to complete the motor replacement. Attached please find the Pentair Whisperflo Pump exploded parts diagram for reference.

Hello there, I’m wondering approximately how much energy will it consume I keep it running 24/7?
Reply
Hi Mike, volts x amps = watts, so the B846 (at 230 volts) times 5.4 amps = 1242 watts, so this would use approximately 29,808 watts or 29.8kWHours of power per day if it was never turned off. Multiply 29.8 by the average California electric rate of 25 cents per kWH and it would cost $7.45 per day to run this motor. Our guide on How Much Does My Pool Pump Cost to Run? has more information.
