What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I ordered the Century Centurion 7-177452-03, 2 hp, 1.3 sf, cont duty, thermal protection, by A.O.Smith. It is for a Pentair Whisper-FLO, MOD# WFE-8. The motor I have has an "DP" Enclosure. The replacement motor has an "ODP" enclosure. The motor is installed outdoors on a concrete slab. ODP is for indoor, dry environments. Is there a DP or TEFC replacement available?

Hi Donn, The labeling has changed, all 1081 pool motors are now labeled as ODP "opened drippedproof."  This motor will replace the current motor that you have. The shaft seal and gaskets will also need to be replaced, the Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT has all the necessary parts.

i need new seals and gasket to this pump but i haven’t been able to find them. Where should I be looking?
 Reply

Hi, Joe. The pump seal and gaskets are based on the pump model, not the motor. You will have to provide us with the model or pictures of you pump in order to locate the correct pump seal and gaskets.

I have a Pentair UltraFlow pump model 3846880FR with a MagneTek Century Centurion 2HP motor PN 7-177452-03. Checking that replacement motor that I need is an AO Smith B2843, not an SQ1202. Also confirm that GOKIT20 is the right one for me. Thanks.

Motor on this pump is shot. Can I replace it with a vsp pump, higher HP and which "tune up kit" do I purchase to replace pump parts? Thanks.

Hi Richard, Yes you can replace your motor with a new variable speed motor. You would require this 1.65 HP Variable Speed Motor and you will need this 1.5 HP Impeller. Based on the year your pump was manufactured You will also need this Sta-Rite Seal Kit Pre 1998 or this Sta-Rite Seal Kit 1998 and After. If you are not sure if your pump is from before or after 1998, then we put together this Video on How to Determine if your Sta-Rite Pump is Before or After 1998.  We also put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.
