I have a pool that is about 10,000 gallons but I am thinking of buying a salt chlorine system for pools up to 20,000 gallons. Would the larger unit be a problem?
Reply
It is not a problem to oversize a salt system. It would take the larger unit less time to produce the necessary chlorine so it is actually more efficient. When the pool volume is very close to the capacity of the salt chlorine generator (for example, the pool is 18,000 gallons and the generator is rated at a maximum of 20,000 gallons), we would recommend going up to the next size generator.

Is the salt included with the salt chlorine generator?
Reply
No, salt is not included. You would purchase the salt locally and the quantity will depend upon the number of gallons of water in your pool. Use a salt that is at least 99.8% pure NaCl. The preferred salt is evaporated, granulated, food quality, and NON-iodized. Avoid using salt with anti-caking agents like sodium ferrocyanide, also known as yellow YPS (prussiate of soda). These cause some discoloration of fittings and pool surface finishes. DO NOT use calcium chloride.

I'm getting ready to start up my salt water pool. What chemicals do I need?
Reply
If you are staring up the pool, you will want to top off your pool water level before you add any chemicals. To keep a salt water pool chlorinated, the salt range should be about 3200-3500ppm (you can find it in the owners manual). You should not have to add a significant amount of salt to your pool each year unless the pool has lost a significant amount of water due to draining or leakage. When you open your salt water pool, you will want to check the stabilizer, total chlorine, free chlorine, pH, phosphates, salt and alkalinity. The main chemical you will want to pay attention to is the conditioner/stabilizer. The conditioner is sunscreen for the chlorine your system will be making. Simply put, no conditioner = no chlorine. Two additional products that I would recommend are Salt Water Magic & PHOSFREE

How much salt will I need when I start up my salt system?
Reply
The exact amount of salt needed will depend on the size of the pool and the manufacturer of the salt system. On average, you will need 200-400 pounds of salt for an in ground swimming pool.

Will the water taste salty?
Reply
Generally you should not be able to taste any salt in the pool because the level of salt in the water is so low, however some people with sensitive palates might detect a small amount of salt.

Will the Aqua Rite work on a portable spa?
Reply
The Aqua Rite chlorinator is specifically designed for use with in-ground pools, and will not work with portable spas or hot tubs due to its high output.

What is “SUPER CHLORINATE”?
Reply
The unit will run in 2 separate polarities and continually switch sides as long as the pump continues to run. The desired output percentage dial will tell the chlorinator how long to generate in each polarity, SUPER CHLORINATE simply tells the unit to ignore the dial setting for 24 hours and generate chlorine at 100% of its capability.

Is the flow switch direction important?
Reply
Yes. The flow switch must be mounted so the arrows on the switch it’s self go in the direction of flow. Also, the flow switch requires 12 inches of straight pipe before the water enters the part to ensure there is no turbulence inside the switch compartment causing the switch to display “no flow” in error. Also, the switch needs to see at least 11GPM of flow to properly close the switch.

I've had a salt water pool for about 5 years now and my wife and I both agree that the first year or two we could taste the salt and our skin always felt real smooth almost slimy when we got out. Now we don't taste any salt and our skin doesn't feel as good, has the cell gone bad?? it's still producing chlorine as far as I can tell...
Reply
The feel of the water is based on the level of salt , not the production of chlorine. I would suggest getting the levels checked and return the water to the higher end of "ok" for the system to operate. This way, it will have more room to fall before needing more salt.

My pool is about 18K gal in N Texas. Am I better off with the 25K system or is it better to move up to the 40K gal system to avoid over taxing the equipment? Is it worth getting the pro system primarily for the benefit of maintaining the ph with CO2?
How do the aquarite and Pentair Intellichlor compare? Is one better than the other?
Reply
Hi, It would be better to go with the 40K system verses the 25K, the cell will last longer. It would also be worth it to get the Aqua-Rite Pro to keep the pH and Chlorine levels maintained. Cost wise the Hayward Pro System would be better, Pentair does not have an all inclusive set up like Hayward does.

Does the 40,000 gal option of the Hayward salt system come with adapters to accommodate 1-1/2" lines. I noticed that the specifications indicate that the cell is 2".

It does not come with adapters

The pump I am installing (Tristar VS) has its own timer/control unit, which does not have the LOAD terminals like my current mechanical timer has. How does one connect the Aquarite to make sure it is powered only when the pump is on? Does one just power it 24/7 and rely on the flow switch?
Reply
Chris, Unfortunately, you would not be able to control the AQR9 from the pump. The AQR9 has a flow switch that will sense the flow going through it. On the lower rpm speed, the system would not generate chlorine.

having an issue with my Aqua rite. when the pump comes on, i get the no flow wait, then it goes green to generating with the 'yellow inspect cell light' on, then all the lights go off completely.
I cleaned the generator, no change, then replaced it with a new one, no change.

Chris, It may be a bad board. i would recommend going through the AquaRite troubleshooting guide. It will show you how to pinpoint the issue.

When I view the salt level (press diagnostics button 5 times) the number is -3.00. That doesn't seem to make sense. It used to show numbers like 2700, 2800, 3000, etc. I've done water testing at pool stores and the salt level is always around 2600 -3000. The other display numbers don't seem to be accurate either. I recently replaced the T-cell because it wasn't generating chlorine (flashing Low Salt/Inspect Cell). It now says Generating so could be fixed. Any thoughts on the display numbers?

Dave, It sounds like your system is set to metric. To change it back to ppm, switch from auto to superchlorinate while you are on that screen. Also, if you changed the cell, the average salt level needs to be reset. To reset, turn the unit to Off and then back to Auto. Wait for the relay to click (5 to 10 seconds). Then, press the diagnostics button 5 times to display Instant Salt level. Wait for the number to settle.

I have an inground pool with 13000 gallons of water. Have been thinking of changing to a salt system. Was thinking of going with AQR9 which is good for 25K gallons. Would this be a good choice?

I have aqua Rite Tcell15 which is for 40,000 pool size but my pool is 15-18,000 gallons. Is there something I should be aware of changing to Aqr9?
I also have a hot tub attached, should I turn off the Aqua Rite when using the hot tub?

Hi, Marty. Switching from an AQR15 to an AQR9 system, you will have to operate the system at a higher output shortening the cell life.

Good morning . I am in the market for a salt pump.
Your agent recommends the 25 k
My pool is 10 meters by 4 meters, 1.5 deep, so it is some 60 cubic meters.
Is this machine appropriate?
Additional question, here the pool is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, all year.
Will this work?
Hi, Major. Yes, this AquaRite 25K will be sufficient for a pool your size.

I have an above ground oval shaped pool that is 18’ wide x 33’ long and is 54” deep. Would this work for my pool or would I need one specifically for an above ground pool? If so, which would you recommend? By my figures, this should be around 15,500 to 16,800 gallons.
Reply
Hi Ashley, Yes this work for your above ground pool with the dimensions you have stated. You would not need a specific above ground pool system.

I have a Jandy salt system now , but I want to switch to a Hayward AQR9 system. My question is I have a inside Aqualink control system that lets me program the pumps and my whole pool from inside my house. If I change ton the Hayward Aqr9 sysem do I need a Hayward OnCommand base controller to mount inside my house to do the same thing?
Reply
Ed, yes, if you switch to the AquaRite Chlorine Generator 25K - AQR9 you will need a new automation system to achieve the same functionality as before.

What is the difference between the AQR9 AND W3AQR3 salt system by Hayward?

Hi Josh, so there is no actual difference between the two model numbers AQR9 and W3AQR9. The "W3" actually just references the online retail part number.

I want to replace my Hayward Aqua rite 20 with the AquaRite Chlorine Generator 25K - AQR9 - W3AQR9 system. My question is does this unit come already programed so all I would have to do is remove my control box and t-cell and wire it up? I'm assuming that my power wires would go on the same terminals as my old unit. Also who honors the 3 year warranty?
Thanks

Hello Dennis. The Hayward AquaRite Chlorine Generator 25K model W3AQR9 comes complete ready to install. The power wires should attach to the same terminal numbers as your current model. It is always advisable to follow the Installation/Operation Manual instructions provided with the unit. Prior to attaching the cell wire, follow the directions printed on the Red Warning Label attached to the Cell wire to make certain the Control Unit is programmed to the Cell size being installed. The following guide shows how to clean a Hayward AquaRite Turbo Cell. With daily use hard mineral deposits will build up on the electrolytic plates of the cell. The manufacturer recommends checking the Hayward AquaRite Turbo Cell 3-4 times a year and cleaning it with a solution of water and muriatic acid to descale any deposits as required.
