How would I go about changing an above ground pool from chlorine to salt water? Can it be done?

Yes this can be done. You would add the appropriate amount of salt to your pool according to the owner's manual. Once the salt chlorinator is installed the salt water which passes through the salt cell will create chlorine which is sent back to the pool, so you will actually be manufacturing your own chlorine. On most pools you want to maintain a Chlorine level of 3.0 PPM (Parts Per Million) so the first week or so you will be testing the water to try to get the unit dialed into the correct setting to maintain the 3.0 PPM of chlorine. Once you get the salt chlorinator dialed into the proper setting that is it. The nice thing about the salt chlorinators is that the amount of salt needed to maintain the pool is below the taste threshold so will not taste salt in the water of the pool.

What is the difference between the Aqua Trol HP and RJ?

The HP (Hose Pipe) version is installed in the hoses/pipes next to your pool filter, where the RJ (Return Jet) version the cell is mounted directly to the return jet on the side of your pool. Both units work exactly the same but you would need to determine which one would be easier to install from a plumbing stand point. I would suggest the AquaTrol Salt Chlorine Generator as it is much higher quality product than the ChlorEase. The AquaTrol has much more titanium coating on the blades of the salt cell which makes the salt cell last much longer, so you should get about 4-6 years out of the salt cell on the AquaTrol. The AquaTrol comes in several models first you can get in an HP model which would be installed in the plumbing next to your pool pump or you can get it in an RJ model which would hook up directly to the return jet on your pool (Both models perform identically, you would just need to choose the one that would work best for your application - the RJ is quite a bit less and operates the same) Lastly the AquaTrol is available with a standard 3 prong plug or a Twist Lock depending on the electrical receptacle you have available to you. According to the manufacturer, the AQTROLHP, which has a hose or pipe connection, can be used for small in-ground pools below 18,000 gallons. However, it would be more efficient to use the AquaRite in-ground model for either 20,000 or 40,000 gallons.

I am confused. The photos all show the generator and the turbo cell as a package. Does the turbo cell come WITH the generator or is this the price of JUST the generator and then you purchase the turbo cell separately? Thanks

How much salt does the system require?

The Aqua Trol works best with approximately 3200 ppm salt, which is roughly the equivalent to a teaspoon per gallon. However, the Aqua Trol® will operate with salt levels anywhere from 2700 ppm to 3400 ppm.

Do I have to use the pump timer? Can I run my pump 24 hours a day?

The Aqua Trol will not generate chlorine if when the pump timer is off. If you want to run the pump continuously, either pull out all the trippers on the timer or else put the manual switch on the timer (small button near the center of the timer) into the "1" position.

The cell can be mounted in any manner necessary (EXCEPT FOR TROL RJ UNITS – THAT CELL MUST BE MOUNTED TO THE SIDE OF THE POOL AT THE RETURN JET) be it horizontal or vertical, and the cord can be mounted upstream or down stream, the cell is non directional.

Are the units safe to use with pool covers?

Yes but, pool covers should be removed every few days to keep the corrosive gases from building under the cover causing corrosion or other forms of damage to the pool equipment.

Is the flow switch direction important?

Yes. The flow switch must be mounted so the arrows on the switch it’s self go in the direction of flow. Also, the flow switch requires 12 inches of straight pipe before the water enters the part to ensure there is no turbulence inside the switch compartment causing the switch to display “no flow” in error. Also, the switch needs to see at least 11GPM of flow to properly close the switch.

i have an aqua tool RJ twist lock model... and my research has told me that cell is the same as the HP version... except for plumbing location and flow switch.... my question is can i order a flow switch and fittings and mount my cell in a HP style and use same Controller box? there is a place to plug in flow switch... thanks

I have an Aqua Trol RJ. It is an older model, (before Haywood bought them) that I bought used. I have everything installed and 160 lbs of salt in a 6000 gl pool. The display is reading 700. None of the lights are on. The timer is running. I do not have the pump connected to the controller. I power it separately. The pump has been running over 24 hrs. It does not seem to be generating chlorine. Any ideas?

I bought the AQ-TROL-HP 4 years ago. All of a sudden it does not register a reading for the salt level. It went from 2900 to 800 one day then to 0 the next. I added salt but it stays at 0. What problem does this indicate to you? Do I need a whole new unit? A new cell? A new circuit board? Thank you

Hi Jenny, I would recommend that you take a sample of your pool water to your local pool store. If the salt level is actually high you will need to drain water out of the pool to lower the salt level.

Regarding previous question about new cell and high salt
I checked the chlorine level in pool and it reads very low.
When cell is turned on, it generates for a minute then red light high salt turns on. We have drained some(small amount) and added water. I have an Aqua Trol Above ground salt generator w/ turbo cell t 5. The replacement cell I purchased is a generic Salt cell manufactured by Compupools /20000gallons GRC20GH Please help!!!!! Frustrated!!! this is my 3rd cell and 2nd board!!

Jenny, I would recommend calling Hayward to trouble-shoot. The system may not be reading the cell correctly. You can reach Hayward at 908-351-5400.

We have a AQ-TROL-RJ, the cell is T-CELL-5. We believe after everything we have read that we need to replace our cell (we purchased the whole system in 2013). We noticed on the other day that the salt reading was at 0, yesterday we noticed the pool was turning green. We cleaned the cell, added salt, and the "Check Salt" along with "Inspect Cell" lights stay on. If the cell has gone bad, can we replace it with a T-CELL-9?

Hi, Mark. This unit uses 4 amp at 100% output. So depending on the amps of the pump a 30 amp breaker is sufficient.

I am looking at the electrical 1st diagram on pg 11 of the manual (gfci outlet), is this the proper way to install according to the NEC book? Also is that a built in timer in the unit? If yes will that be just for the saltwater generator or will it control the for the pump as well?

I have an aq-trol-hp when I plugged the unit into the outlet it immediately tripped the breaker. I plugged to a different outlet it did the same thing. There's a reset on the unit and I reset that it tripped that also
