Is there a feedback mechanism that tells the unit the chlorine balance in the pool? Is this a way for me to automate addition of clorine to keep it always at the correct level? Or, just another place to put the tab aside from the the drain basket?
Reply
There is a dial on this unit which has a setting from 1-10 If you set the dial on 1 it will be letting the least amount of chlorine to the pool and if you have it set at 10 this would send the most amount of chlorine to the pool. So you can automate the feed of chlorine to the pool but you will still need to manually test your water. We do not recommend placing tablets in the skimmer basket because this high concentration of chlorine goes directly back to your pump and can cause corrosion to your pool equipment. If you do not go with the automatic chlorinator we would recommend at least going with one of our floating chlorinators so you do not damage your equipment you may view our floating chlorinators here http://www.inyopools.com/chlorinators_floating.aspx

Does the in-line chlorinator come with a check valve, or must it be purchased separately?

No this does not come with the check valve. We would highly reccommend purchasing one of the check valves listed on this page http://www.inyopools.com/valves_flo_check.aspx

How do I know if one chlorinator is enough for my pool?
Reply
The Hayward CL200 or CL220 chlorinator will provide enough chlorine for up to 40,000 gallons of water. You would need to calculate the volume of your pool to determine how many chlorinators you would need. For example, if you have 60,000 gallons then you would use two CL200 or CL220 chlorinators.

What is the difference between an inline and offline chlorinator?
Reply
An inline chlorinator would be plumbed directly inline with the plumbing. For an existing pool, this would mean a section of pipe would need to be cut out to install the chlorinator. An offline chlorinator attaches to existing plumbing by chlorinator tubing (holes would be drilled into existing pipe to attach the tubing.)

I have a really hard time taking the cap off my chlorinator. Is there a wrench that I can buy?

If you are having difficulty removing the lid on your Hayward CL200 or CL220, you can the Dura Grip Lid Wrench: http://www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352020738.htm#parts It fits securely on the lid, making removal a breeze.

I am thinking of purchasing a chlorinator, I use flex hoses right now. Will I have to change to solid piping?
Reply
You can use flex pvc or hose to plumb in the chlorinator. Keep in mind that both will deteriorate at a faster pace vs hard pvc and will need to be replaced eventually.

I have a Hayward inline chlorinator now and for approx 10 years. For the past 4-5 years we have difficulty unscrewing the top off to add the chlorine and to the point i can no longer add the chlorine myself. I need to ask someone else to do it and it is difficult for them as well. We would like to replace the chlorinator but afraid to get this same model with a screw top as we may have the same difficulty. Does Hayward sell a latch-on type lid rather than a screw-on type?

Unfortunately Hayward has not changed the design. The best way to prevent this from recurring is to keep the lid o-ring lubricated and to use the lid wrench - Part number 0211-0 or click on this link - http://www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352020738.htm#parts

I have a 33ft round above ground pool (27,500 gal) with flex hoses. Will this work or do you recommend something else?

Hello John - The CL200 will work on your pool. We would recommend purchasing two adapters for the flex hoses.

I am putting in a small in ground fiberglass pool, +/- 2500 gals and I am installing a 40 watt uv sanitizer and an ionizer. I understand I will still need to add a small amount of chlorine, equivalent to tap water. Is the lowest setting low enough for this application?
Reply
Bruce - The CL200 , set on the lowest setting, may produce too much chlorine for your application. We would recommend the Rainbow 320. The 320 has the option to add a spa chamber which allows you to lower the chlorine output by using smaller tabs.

Have 2 inch piping through whole system with water features. 55 gpm pump, cartridge filter. Would putting this in create a restriction dropping to 1 1/2 pipe? Would I be better off with a off line? I'm replacing a pentair salt chlorinator and did not know if would be same unions. Can you give thread dimensions? Thank you in advance.
Reply
Yes putting the Hayward CL200 on 2" plumbing would cause a bit of a flow restriction as if you look through the 1-1/2" port it actually bottle-necks down to about 3/4" at its narrowest point. The offline version does have some issues with the tubes getting clogged. I would suggest the Rainbow 320 Inline chlorinator as it is a straight 2" port and has minimal to no flow restriction on 2" plumbing.

I have an 18x36 in-ground chlorine pool with an inline chlorinator that was installed when pool was constructed in 1997. Haywayd system, screw off lid with drop in tablets. Dial it in and leave it. I still do the weekly check and treatments if necessary but my question is: I have been told that an inline chlorinator can only be used on saltwater pools. Please respond with information.

Kathy, In-line chlorinator are made for customers who uses chlorine tablets to chlorinate their pool. Saltwater pool wouldn't need an in-line chlorinator because the chlorine is generated with a saltwater system.

I pump untreated 'spring water through a sediment filter, then into a 1,500 gal storage tank. Can I add your chlorinator to the 1 1/2 inch line going INT0 the storage tank, immediately after the sediment filter? From storage, water goes to a 'pressure tank' and through two 'whole house' carbon filters BEF0RE branching off for use by my family. Is your chlorinator 'adjustable' to our water’s 'chlorine' needs, if any? We test water weekly. Thanks,

Wallis, Unfortunately we can not recommend this product for anything other than pool use. I would recommend calling Hayward to answer yoru question. You can reach them at 888-429-9273.

My Hayward Chlorinator no longer dissolves the salt tablets. To me this means the water flow is bypassing the salt storage area. Is this a simple fix (e.g. cleaning debris out of the intake) or do I need to replace the unit?

Mark, You can try cleaning out the chlorinator by pouring hot water down the chlorinator. If that doesn't work then replacing the chlorinator will be your next option.

I just replaced my Hayward Chlorinator with a new one, same model, CL200. I installed new lines and fittings that came with it. I have two questions. First, the Chlorinator is not completely filling with water...maybe 1/2 full. Why? Second, with 7 tablets in the Chlorinator, and the adjustment set to the maximum, and my chlorine readings are constantly low (.1). Why would it not be reading quite high, and then require me to reduce the setting. Same problem with the old one. Thanks for your help.
Reply
Allan, It is common for the chlorinator to remain half empty. When you first put the tablets in, it will take a few days for you to get a chlorine reading since they are slow dissolve tabs. You can try shocking the pool when you first put in the tabs to get a chlorine reading.

I have a 21x41 above ground pool. Completely decked in. If installing a inline unit, do I need a check valve in place as well? The unit will be under the deck but below the water level of the pool.
Reply
Jerry, A check valve is required to protect chlorine from back flowing into your heater or filter, whichever one you have installed before the chlorinator.
Reply
Do I need the check valve to go with the Inline chlorinator for my above ground pool. The filter and pump are on ground level and under the water line.
Reply
Jerry, It is common practice to install a check valve before a chlorinator to keep the more concetrated chlorine from backing up into the filter and pump when the pump is shut off.

I have an above ground set up and use flex hose not rigid schedule 40 pipe. My pool is 21x41 oval. I have a 1.5 hp Hayward Power Flo Matrix pump. Which inline chlorinator model would I use and can I get the fittings to use the flex hose with.

Jerry, If you're using 1-1/2" flex hose you can use the Hayward InLine Chlorinator (CL200) with the Union Connectors (SP1500UNPAK2C).

After adding chloro tabs to my CL200 a couple of weeks ago, my chlorine rose to 10 ppm within 2 days when the dial was set to 2. The unit is about 5 yrs old and setting the dial to 2 usually keeps the Cl at 2-3 ppm. Over 10 days ago I set the dial to off and the ppm still hasn't gone down. The dial still stops when turned to off or full. Do I need to replace the dial or do I need a kit OR should I replace the CL200?

Jim, You can replace just the Control Knob Assembly W/O-ring (CLX200PA) or replace the complete Hayward InLine Chlorinator (CL200) unit since it is 5 years old.

which unit should I use for my above ground 21x41 pool. The CL220 or another unit such as the NA342? I have flex hoses so I would need the adapters and check valve. Of the 2 units which one is your suggestion for me to order. Will the NA342 perform as well as the CL220?
Reply
Mr. Shannon,Both units will work on your pool. However, one of the major differences is the NA342 does not come with any hoses. It must be plumbed inline with the rest of your equipment. On the other hand, the CL220 is an offline unit and comes with all necessary tubing and clamps. The CL220 is sold more frequently.

I just ordered a CL200, the two fittings to use for my flex hoses and a check valve. On the check valve, I know it goes prior to the chlorinator but as I have flex hoses and not rigid schedule 40 plumbing ( above ground 21x41 pool) how will the check valve mate up with the 1.5 inch flex hoses?
Reply
Jerry, You will have to use PVC for the check valve and then connect the flex hose to the PVC. The pressure will be to much for the flex hose going into the check valve, it may cause it to leak.

difference versus offline 220 chlorinator?

The only real difference between these models is that the CL200 is designed for inline use being plumbed in while the CL220 is for offline using flex tube clamped to the plumbing.

This chlorinator would be a very good option. As long as the flow through the chlorinator is at that needed 50-90 gallons per minute then it will work great. Also please be sure that the stabilizer and or also known as the cyanuric acid level is in par, for that will also aid in keeping the chlorine level stable.

can't seem to get enough chlorine in my 15K gallon pool. just replaced the auto chlorinator - running it wide open, and also have 2 floaters full of 4" tabs. Cannot get the level up into the "good" range. Just recently had plaster removed and pebble-tech installed. Also replaced pump with a variable speed. Both done last fall - so water was also changed. Water is in good shape according to Leslie's testing.
Any ideas? Chorine tabs are +1 yr old - can they go bad with age?
Reply
I understand that your water test from Leslie's says that the water is in good shape, but am I assuming you mean everything EXCEPT the chlorine is in good shape. That said, I will first ask if you are testing the water with both test strips and the drops? If not, then try both. Make sure your strips and reagents are under 1 year old. Second, you may need to shock the pool with either liquid or powder chlorine. Tablets are not shock, and an excessive use of tablets can result in high CYA numbers. Third, Yes, tablets can go bad. Tablets have an average shelf life of 1 year. Lastly, if you have had an algae bloom recently and have been fighting it, this can also cause a drop in the chlorine levels.

Hi Kathie, If you're referring to the dial that indicates the amount of chlorine that the chlorinator dispenses. You can fill the chlorinator to capacity or put a couple which can last a few days or a week.
Reply
Does the CL200 have any moving parts inside the unit, except the dial? How does the dial adjust the water flow? Can things get stuck and not allow change in water flow even if dial moves?
Reply
Hello, I would have to refer you to the manufacturer if you require specific information on how the chlorinator parts work (908-355-7995) but to try to answer your questions. The dial allows more chlorine rich water to be fed back to the pool. Commonly, there is a small check valve that allows water to enter the tablet chamber. The check valve can get "stuck", but there is not a piece you can access to "unstick" it. It is inside the bottom feed tube.

CL200. Trouble with holding chlorine in pools. Multiple Tests so far including phosphates are negative. If I disconnect the hose into return water is flowing so it appears to be functioning. Does this sound right? Would bad check valve somehow prevent chlorine to return ?
Reply
If the chlorine tablets are dissolving while in the chlorinator (1-1.5 weeks) and if water is flowing freely, then I would not think the check valve is the problem. Once we have determined the chlorinator is not the problem, I would look to a solution by having your water tested at a local pool store and ensuring that all levels are balanced and no algae is present.

I am using this chlorinator on a large 20x50 pool. I am not sure it is large enough to keep it from greening up or if I am not using enough stabilizer and cyanuric acid. Seems I am using alot of shock each week also to keep it blue. Is this cl200 good enough for a 20x50 pool with a large 9ft deep end?
Reply
The chlorinator is large enough to handle your pool, with an approximate size of 34,000 gallons. You should be using at least 4-6 tablets every week to week and a half. Your stabilizer/CYA levels should be in a 30-50ppm range to hold the chlorine properly. If you have a current algae bloom, you will need to treat that with algaecide and shock before attempting to determine if your chlorinator is sufficient enough.
Reply
If your pool doesn't have a separate chlorinator where do the chlorine tablets go?

You can use a chlorine float to sanitize your pool.
Reply
I currently have a Hayward chlorinator installed using stabilized chlorine pucks.
My CYA levels are off the chart. Can I replace the chlorinator with a new one and use non-stabilized chlorine pucks in the new chlorinator (to avoid adding even more stabilizer)?

Hello, The CL200 chlorinator is for use with slow dissolve tablets only. If you want to use "non-stabilized tablets", you would need to use a floating chlorinator.

I have a cl200 and have been using it for a little over a year and filled it with about 8 tablets and the setting between 4-6 but this year when it is filled and just set on 2 the chlorine gets higher than it is supposed to, so I just put in 2 tablets at a time could the setting indicator need fixed or a part for the adjustment need replaced or what can be done, I hope the answer is not a new chlorinator?
Reply
First, I would recommend that you use 1-3 tablets per 10,000 gallons in your pool. The more chlorine tablets you use, the stronger the concentration is administered. You have tried to pinch back the amount of chlorine, but what is being fed is super strong. I would try to find the right number of tablets, and then try setting it mid way. Then you have more flexibility to increase or decrease the amount of chlorine fed to your water.

The chlorinator should have little to no sound coming from it. You can try to make sure the lid and gasket are sealed properly and that you have no air in your lines. There are really no additional options for reducing the volume of a chlorinator.

Hello, depending on whether you have an offline or inline series you would need to flush your lines to see if it's something right before the chlorinator. If you have an offline series you can just get Maintenance Kit (clx220ga) to replace tubing that might be clogged or you can try and use a bristle brush to clear out any DE that could be caught in the tubing. If you have a Inline series, you might check the Tube, Feeder (clx200h) which is located in the chlorinator itself. To see all parts for the CL200.

Hi, Chris. Installing an Inline Check Valve is required to prevent chlorine gas from backflowing into the heater. Turning off the control valve will not prevent backflow.

Reply
Perugini, Every pool is different. You will have to adjust the dial valve and monitor your chlorine readings. The number on the dial indicates how much or how little chlorine is being released to the pool. 0 would be the lowest setting and 10, the highest. I would say start off at 5 and adjust it from there.

I have a Hayward CL200. What do the numbers on the dial represent? Do they determine the flow rate of the chlorine tablets?

The dial on the chlorinator controls the flow of water through the valve and this controls the chlorine output. Lower numbers mean less chlorine and higher numbers mean more chlorine.

I just purchased the Cl200. I use flexible hose with 1 1/2’ hose adapters. When I saw the chlorine feeder at a pool store it looked like it accepted a 1 1/2’ hose adapter on each end that would then connect to my flexible hose. Is this correct?

Hi, Linda. You are able to use Hose Adapters with this chlorinator.

We are planning on purchasing the 27ft 54inch Reprieve kit with filter and heavy guage liner. My question is, will this plumb directly in line with the hoses that come with the pool package?, and if not, what adapters are needed?

Hi, Troy. You can use this Hayward Chlorinator with the hoses that are included with your pool package. You will need to purchase a pair of Hose Adapters.

the Chlorine granulars settle in the bottom of the cl-200
And become hardened. Is this normal?
Reply
Hi, Nick. These chlorinators are not suitable to use granular chlorine, just the tabs. Using granular can cause major issues.

I have a Hayward cl-200
I put slow dissolve tablets in but after a few days when I open it up the chlorine tablets are not completely gone but are settled to the bottom and have become hardened. I have to use a screwdriver to chisel out the product. Is this normal?
Reply
That is normal in those tablets as there is a added chemical that binds them for the slow release we would only recommend 99% Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione.

what is the difference between the cl200 and the cl200s. I don't know which one to purchase and install.
Reply
Hi, John. The CL200S has 2" ports and the CL200 has 1-1/2 inch ports. Your plumbing size will determine which one to purchase.

I am going on vacation and plan on putting in more chlorine tabs then normal to make it though the week. Will I also have to adjust my setting?
Reply
Hello, Yes, that would be good. You will not have to adjust your settings, just add more tablets.

I just installed a Hayward CL200 on return side of my Jacuzzi filter (no heater). When my Pentair pump runs at high rpm (2300 to 2800) the pressure gauge at the top of the filter reads in the neighborhood of 100 psi. Isn't that kind of extreme? Before that I had an off-line feeder that constantly leaked, but the pressure at the top of the filter was in the neighborhood of 20 psi.
Reply
Hi, Jim. That is extremely high, however, all pool filter has a maximum operating psi of 50, if it is truely 100 psi the filter will fail. Check to see if the Chlorinator is installed properly with the flow direction in the proper orientation.
Reply
This is way too high. Is your pressure gauge reading correctly? Could have plumbed the chlorinator in wrong check flow arrows.

What in-line chlorinator would you recommend for a 12x18 4.2 deep pool - approx 6,500 gallons?
Reply
Hello, this would be a good model chlorinator for a swimming pool of your size and more. Also, it being inline will help with water flow.

My CL 200 chlorinator is not working properly. We keep coming up low on chlorine. How do I know if its broken, or maybe just clogged?
Thank you
Reply
Hi Maria, these chlorinators should dissolve one 3 inch chlorine tablet per 5k gallons of water per week in the swim season. If not, then I recommend making sure all lines that are part of it are not clogged, that the filter has good flow coming into and out of it, and that your pool stabilizer/conditioner/Cyanuric Acid level is up to requirement.

Hi James, there may be a few reasons as to why a swimming pool is having a low chlorine issue. Here is a guide that we put together called "Why Does My Pool Have No Chlorine?" that may help.

I need to replace the O-Ring on my Chlorine Feeder. I'm attaching a pic....could you tell me what model chlorinator I have (pretty sure I bought it from you but several years ago) and direct me to the correct O-Ring replacement?
Thank you!!
Thank you for contacting Inyo Pools, It appears to be a Hayward cl200. The O-ring should be Chlorinator Cover O-ring - O-231V Is there any other stickers or part numbers on the chlorinator?
Reply
No, no part number or sticker except for the warning labels. So maybe it isn't a real Hayward. I will order the o-ring you recommended and see if it works. Thanks!!
