How do I break chlorine lock?
Reply
One of the main reasons that chlorine can become "locked" is that too much stabilizer has accumulated over the course of time. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) can build up over a long period of time, sometimes months or even years. Once the stabilizer reaches high levels, the chlorine in the water is useless. The only way to break the lock is to reduce the level of cyanuric acid in the pool. The quickest way to do this is to add fresh water to the pool. This will help dilute the acid levels in the pool so that the chlorine will become more effective. Pools should be partially drained and refilled (every 3 years or so).

I use bromine in my spa. It smells very strong, and I would like to change to chlorine. Can I do that or are spa's specially equipped for the use of bromine?
Reply
If you are going to switch from bromine to chlorine, you would need to drain the spa and refill it with fresh water. Bromine is typically used in spas because it holds up better in higher temperatures while chlorine does not. If you want to reduce the amount of bromine you need, you could use a Nature2 Spa Purifier which uses minerals to purify the water.

I was told that you should never put the chlorine tablets in the skimmer, only in a floater. I have never used a floater in 11 years. Is this true? And if yes, why?
Reply
Placing chlorine tablets in the skimmer will cause the skimmer basket and pool pump to corrode prematurely due to the concentration of chlorine. I would recommend using either an automatic chlorinator or a chlorine floater in conjunction with slow dissolve chlorine tablets.

My chlorine levels are really high. Is draining the pool the only way to lower it?
Reply
If your chlorine levels are high, you can use a chlorine reducer to lower it.

My pool turned green recently. Can you recommend something to help clear it up?

There are several things that can cause a pool to turn green. You can use our How to Clean a Green Swimming Pool guide for starters. Be certain to test the water and adjust the chemical levels.

What are chloramines?
Reply
Chloramines are the result of chlorine molecules combining with ammonia and nitrogen in the water. Chloramines smell bad and cause skin and eye irritation. The presence of chloramines can be an indication that you have "chlorine-lock".

We have a bucket of chlorine tablets that was sitting for a few days without the lid on and it rained. We have tried to dry out the bucket and tablets, but some of the individual bags still have a little moisture in them and there is a strong smell. Is it safe to still use them?
Reply
The chlorine tabs will begin to dissolve because of the moisture. You can still use them but they will lose their strength quickly.

can I use these in my hot tub?
Reply
Judy, Thank you for question. This is what I would recommend for a spa. You would need a spa floater and I would also recommend you get a Bromine Test kit. This powerful and effective sanitizer kills algae and bacteria. This alternative to chlorine is great for use in swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. Our bromine is pH balanced so it is less harsh on skin, eyes, hair, and swimwear. Plus, bromine produces no chlorine odor, making it ideal for indoor pools. Since bromine dissolves at a much slower rate than chlorine, it must be dispensed by an automatic feeder.

Will these tablets cause copper stains in vinyl inground pool?
Reply
These tablets do not contain any copper. I would recommend using a metal remover like SeaKlear Metal Stain Control to eliminate the copper in your water.

Is this chlorine ok for vinyl liner and will not fade the vinyl liner.I was told to use a certain kind of chlorine to keep from fading the vinyl liner
Reply
Hi. This chlorine is okay to use with a vinyl liner pool. To keep the liner from fading you will just have to keep your water chemistry balanced. You cannot use Cal-Hypo Shock with a vinyl liner pool.

Has anyone checked your 3" chlorine price per pound lately? And why do two 25lb buckets cost less than one 50lb?
Just wanted to point it out.

I have been using the 3 inch Chlorine Tablets for years in my pool skimmer basket but this year I have notes that they are not
lasting as long as they have been in the past. it all most like I have to use more a week then I should. what could be the problem.
Reply
Hi. Placing tablets in your skimmer is bad for your equipment and since you have no control of the amount of chlorine released, you will use more. An increase in water temperature, water flow or tab quality can allow the tabs to dissolve quicker.

Which is better for shock, powdered/granular Chlorine or Liquid Chlorine
Reply
Hello, ideally liquid chlorine is best for shocking as there is no dissolving of solids needed and will not leave a residue on the pool floor.

which is better, a chlorine pool or a salt sanitizing system?

That really does come down to lifestyle and preference but please click here to be directed to a blog article we created called "Traditional chlorine vs saltwater pool" that will better inform you.

Why is placing chlorine tablets in the skimmer basket dangerous to the equipment?
Reply
Hi Brian, your pool equipment was designed to handle the normal amounts of chlorine in a pool but not designed to handle a high concentration of the oxidizer that it would see if the tablets were in the skimmer basket; the tablets are designed to dissolve slowly while leisurely floating in your pool (or while in a chlorinator) and not with the flow of water they would see in a skimmer basket. Heaters, filters, pumps, and valves would all have a much shorter lifespan if they came in contact with a steady stream of chlorine.

I have an older in ground pool (Gunite) with copper piping. I have been using Leslies Mighty Tabs, 3", in the skimmer basket to aid in maintaing chemical levels. Mighty Tabs were recommended because of my copper piping. Apparently Might tabs are either out of production or ?, anyway is there a substitute?
Reply
Hi Mark, Leslie's Mighty Tabs are essentially the same as our InyoPools 3 Inch Pool Chlorine Tablets P27025DE. They are both Trichlor so they both add 6ppm of CYA (stabilizer) for every 10ppm of Chlorine added. If your stabilizer level gets too high switch to Cal-Hypo (which adds calcium) or plain liquid chlorine (which only adds chlorine) for a while. PS We don't recommend using tablets in the skimmer basket. When chlorine tablets dissolve in the skimmer, the water becomes acidic and can damage the skimmer and pool equipment. Your copper lines are wonderful, but they are susceptible to damage from an acidic environment. Use a puck floater.
