Pool Calculations
Note: Calculations are approximate and should only be used as a helpful guide. We recommend to always follow the written instructions found on chemical labels for accurate dosage.
In order to have a balanced swimming pool, you must maintain the correct levels of free chlorine (FC). Free chlorine is the available amount of chlorine that has disinfecting power.
Note: CYA levels directly affect the amount of FC required to effectivly sanitize your pool water.

Adding Trichlor will increase CYA and lower pH.
Total alkalinity is closely related to pH. It measures all of the carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substances that are found in your pool. Total alkalinity is the water’s ability to withstand changes in your pH levels.
Your pH level indicates how acidic or basic your pool water is. When altering your pH level, it's important to know your alkalinity and borate levels since they will directly effect how sensative your pH is to changes.
Note: Changing pH will also change alkalinity.
Options:
Maintaining a salt level in your pool is only required if you have a salt chlorine generator. Salt water pools use sodium chloride (aka Salt) to generate a pure form of chlorine. Please refer to your salt water generator manual for proper levels.
Adding borates to your water introduces many benefits to pool owners such as, inhibiting algae growth, improving the feel and appearance of water, reducing chlorine consumption, and buffering pH.
Cyanuric acid (aka CYA), sometimes referred to as stabilizer, protects your FC (Free Chlorine) from being consumed by sunlight. In a sense, it acts as an umbrella for your FC.
Note: CYA levels directly affect the amount of FC required to effectivly sanitize your pool water.
Options:
Calcium Hardness levels (CH) are used to determine how 'hard'or 'soft' your water is. Too much calcuim, or hard water, can cause scale build on pool walls / equipment. Low calcium can cause pool surfaces to corrode.
Options:
When pool water flows through the recirculation system, resistance to that flow is created in the pipes, valves, fittings, pool filter, and basically anything in the flow path. That resistance is called Total Dynamic Head (TDH) and it has a large impact on determining the size of your pool pump and filter.
