How to Read and Adjust the Hayward Aqua Rite SCG Operational Values

This guide describes the Display Readings on a Hayward Aqua Rite Salt Chlorine Generator (SCG) and links you to a series of guides that tell you have to adjust or recalibrate some of these values including: Average Salt Level; Units of Measure, Cell Size, and Inspect Cell Timer Value.

Step 1

The Hayward Aqua Rite Salt Chlorine Generator displays a total of 9 diagnostic parameters that are accessed by pushing the Diagnostic button sequentially. The default display is the Average Salt Level.  If the button is not pushed for 30 seconds, the display will revert back to this salt display.

Step 2

Push 1, Pool Temperature - When you push the diagnostic button the first time, the display will show you the pool water temperature as it is measured inside the cell. The Temperature is displayed in Fahrenheit or Celsius. The default unit is Fahrenheit. Step 3

Push 2, Cell Voltage - The Cell Voltage is typically 22.0 to 25.0 Volts when chlorine is being generated, otherwise it is 30 to 35 Volts.

Step 4

Push 3, Cell Amperage - The cell's average amperage when chlorine is being generated varies with the size of cell installed: T-15 is 3.1 to 8.0 amps; T-9 is 2.3 to 6.7 amps; T-5 is 1.9 to 5.7 amps; and t-3 is 1.3 to 4.5 amps. When the cell is not generating chlorine the amperage is 0. If the amperage is below the applicable range, check the salt level and inspect and clean the cell.

Step 5

Push 4, Desired Output % - The percent of time the Cell in ON. Run from "0P" to "100P" depending on the knob position.

Step 6

Push 5, Instant Salt Level - The salt level that the System is calculating during the chlorination cycle. A "-" symbol is place in front of the number to distinguish it from the Average Salt Level.  Measured in ppm or grams/Liter depending on units of measure setting. Step 7

Push 6, Program Code - This identifies the product. "AL-0" signifies "Aqua Rite"

Step 8

Push 7, Main Circuit Board Revision - This signifies the software revision level in the Main Circuit Board [currently r-1.59].

Step 9

Push 8, Cell Size - The Aqua Rite SCG uses one of 4 Cell sizes - t-15, t-9, t-5, or t-3. The Cell size displayed here has to match the installed cell to ensure proper operation including salt calculation. The cell install in this system is t-3. Step 10

Push 9, Average Salt Level (Default) - On the 9th push of the Diagnostic Button, the display returns to the default display value, "Average Salt Level". The Average Salt Level reading is a sliding window of Instant Salt Level readings sampled every 3 hours or so. The Average Salt Level should track fairly close to the Instant Salt Level but occasionally, after some events like adding salt or changing cells, the two levels are considerably out of sync. When this happens, the Average Salt Level must be recalibrated to the Instant Salt Level, See our guide on "How To Recalibrate the Salt Level on a Hayward Aqua Rite" for instructions on recalibration.

Step 11

"HI" Salt Display - The higher the salt level, the higher the amperage that is drawn by the Aqua Rite SCG.  If the three larger size cells draw over 10 Amps or the smallest cell draw over 8 amps, the SCG will shut down to prevent itself from overheating. Upon shutting down the display will show "HI". The "High Salt" LED will also illuminate to signal that the pool's salt level must be reduced. Step 12

Reset Inspect Cell Timer - An internal timer is set inside the Aqua Rite SCG to remind you to inspect and clean the Cell. If the "Inspect Cell" LED is flashing and the salt level is above 2700 ppm, the 500 hour timer has been exceeded. Inspect / clean the cell and then hold down the Diagnostic Button for 3-5 seconds to reset the timer for another 500 hours.

Mike - When you replaced your cell, did you reset your cell type and average salt level? See pages 4 and 5 of Hayward's Aqua Rite Diagnostics Manual. If that doesn't help, give Hayward a call at 866-772-2100 and talk to their technical support staff.

My unit is not producing salt.
Amperage is 0. Cell was replaced.
My pool company told me to replace the circuit board. I did that and amperage is still 0.
What now?

Anonymous (desired output) - We have no specific information on this error. You may have a failing Display PCB. Try lifting it off of the main PCB and then reseating it. If that doesn't work, give Hayward a call at 866-772-2100. They should have a solution.

My Desired Output reading (in digital screen) does not match what I have set on the actual dial. For example: the dial is set on 15%, yet the screen reads 65%.Any ideas?

Both the "Average" & "Instant" Salt Levels are reading 3.2, and there is no "Add Salt" indication lit. I've never seen a reading with a decimal point, but it would always read a 4 digit number. Is it possible that it is that low on salt? How do I approach this problem? Thanks!

LinnieBeth - Check to make sure your displayed t-cell size is the same as your installed t-cell size. Here is a link to Haywards' Aqua Rite Diagnostics Manual. It should help you isolate your problem further. Start with page 4.

Water test was showing No Free Chlorine, cleaned then replaced Salt Cell. Still water test still shows No Free Chlorine, what should I do to get the Cell to generate chlorine?

Ivan - If the eight push od the diagnostics button does not tell you what your displayed cell size is, I don't know how you would check to see if it's the same as the install cell. I'd suggest giving Hayward a call at 866-772-2100 to see what they say.

JAS - If I understand you correctly, you said you set the factory default to "t-15" for the cell size. If your cell size is t-3, you have to set the display to t-3. See Step 9 of this guide,

Installed a new T-Cell-3. Followed instructions to include resetting cell hours. Have set factory default to "t-15". Check cell light still comes on and stays on. Any idea why? Thanks!

James - Generally the numbers change as soon as you push the diagnostics button. You may have a loose connection. Try lifting the Diagnostics PC Board straight up off the main PCB, then reseat it.

Should the numbers always be displayed on step 4 and step 6 as you press the diagnostic button? On mine, they only appear after I hold the diagnostic button in for 5 seconds and then scroll through them.

Dan - Try lifting the display PC Board straight up off the main PC Board. Then reseat it. Sometimes the display PCB becomes loose.

I just reconnected my cell and my diagnostic button does not work.

When I push the button it does not toggle to give me the required information and i'm unable to manually reset the check cell light. Would anyone know why I would have this problem. I bought it less then one year ago.

If your average salt reading level value is ~3 (g/L) then you need to switch out of Metric mode. To do this put the main switch in "auto" position, press the diagnostics button to view the temperature, slide the main switch from "auto" to "super chlorinate" and back to "auto".

That's it! Your average salt reading level should now display in ppm.

NOTE: This also changes your temperature to display in F.

Toby - I haven't heard about older systems not displaying cell type. I'd suggest you calling Hayward at 866-772-2100 to verify or see if your system has another issue.

urememberd - Make sure your actual cell size is the same as your displayed cell size. On the eight push, what you indicate as an "e" symbol should be a small "t" with a -15 indicating you have installed a T-15 cell. If your cell is not T-15, you have to tell the control unit what it is. See Step 9 for instruction on how to change displayed cell size. Also see Step 2. It looks like you have a temperature reading of 23. If you're not extremely cold, your system may be set up in metric units. See Step 2 for instructions on changing to standard units. The 0.0 displays indicate that your system is not generating chlorine. Unless your system is set for 100%, these readings would indicate that your system is in a scheduled down period.

None of these numbers correspond with my unit. On the home screen is 2.60, first push 23, second push 11.2, third 0.00, fourth 73P, fifth 0.00, sixth AL -0, seventh r-1.58, eighth e? symbol -15 then back to beginning. This makes no sense when comparing it to your exampke, can you help?
