What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Took the Pentair Challenger pump apart, and could feel that the motor wasn't turning properly. Ordered new motor, pump seal & seal lube, and also a new impeller and o-ring because they were looking old. Went together quite easily and motor is humming and putting out plenty of flow.

In order to fix a leak in the skimmer, the water in the pool was lowered under the skimmer level.
At this point I shut down the valve to the skimmer and tried to run the pump only thru the center drain and barracuda.
It did not work and the pump burned from sucking to much air.
The new pump that I ordered was identical to the old one and having screw-type of connections I was able to reattach it in about 40 minutes. The only thing that took another 40 minutes was to reinsert the 8 gauge wire back and bend it around the connecting screws.
That was the most difficult part, not the pump.

My pool pump motor died on a Friday night. I called the pool store and the pump motor was $100 more than what I purchased it for online. I sent a picture of my pump to make sure I ordered the right motor.
I followed the video tutorial and installed the motor (by myself) in about 5 hours. I have never in my life installed a motor of any kind! Let me also add that I am a 60-year-old woman who knows how to follow directions!

1. Decide on having the motor rebuilt or replaced? Decision was easy since the cost was nearly equal to purchase of a new one, plus the refurbishment time was 3-5 work days.
2. Contact the technical support at INYOPools.com to insure that I selected the correct replacement motor type
3.Order a replacement and begin disassembly and removal of the current motor from the pump assembly including disconnecting the electrical service to the pool timer box
4. Unbolt the motor from the pump housing as well as disconnect the electrical from the timer/control box
5. Remove the impeller housing, impeller and seal copper protective cup .
6. Clean residue off the real impeller housing and ceramic seal copper protective cup
7. Review the motor installation instructions the INYOPool.com website
8. Remove the rear motor cover.
9. Install the rear impeller housing, new ceramic seal assembly, impeller, and front impeller housing
10. Install a new liquid-tight electrical cable to the pump motor
11. Re-install the pump motor/impeller assembly to the pump housing.
12. Connect the new electrical cable to the timer box
13. Reconnect electrical service to the pool timer box
14. Prime the pump filter basket housing and turn on the pool pump
15. Check for leaks , where there were none observed
16. Done! Enjoy a clean pool once again!!!!!

INYOPools site and step by step instruction video made the replacement easy. Removed the diffuser, then the impeller, using your tip to use a wrench to hold the shaft and rotate the impeller counter clock wise and then the protective plate from the old motor. Then reassemble the parts onto the new motor in reverse steps being sure to also replace the motor seal to prevent water entering the motor. The whole process took a little over 1 hour for a job that I had sent out in the past for more than double the cost of what this DIY project cost me.

I found the online video VERY helpful. I used the A.O. Smith motor versus a complete Hayward pump/motor which saved me well over $100. The arrived in only a couple of days and the packaging was very good. I was very pleased with the exact OEM fit and simple instructions that made the replacement quick and easy. Now I have a nice quiet motor that will last many years. Replacing a pool pump motor is within almost everyone's ability as a DIY project.

Had outstanding response from Hector Flores at Inyo Pools when I asked about a replacement for my Sta-Rite pool pump motor. He responded promptly and we put together an order to buy a replacement motor and replacement o-rings kit, at an excellent and affordable price. The order was placed and the unit received within a couple of days. I had a local pool man install the motor and it works great. Hardly know its running. The original motor lasted just over 7 years. Living here in Florida, the pool pump operates approximately 8 hours per day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year. The motor fit perfectly and works great. Above all, I could not be happier with my experience with Inyo Pools. Thank you.

Just installed this 1 Hp AO Smith up rate motor on 230 volt settings; runs a little hot, but very quiet; I checked the true voltage output at the terminals; found 230 volt true output; is it possible to run the motor on "115" volts if "230" volts is coming through ???

(5 out of 5 stars) Excellent Pump Moter Replacement
Reviewed By: PoJo from Clarence, NY ()
Pros: Awesome fit - excellent replacement
Cons: none
Tip to get the impeller off the old pump moter: use a 7/16" open ended wrench - it slides in near the capacitor on the electrical side... rotate the impeller until the wrench slides into place at the end of the shaft and then one person holds the motor and the wrench while a 2nd person loosens the impeller off with bare hands by turning the impeller counter clock-wise.
