What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Ordered the Century 2 HP motor B2843 and the saltwater "Go Kit". Locked out the 220 power box. Removed the end plate off the old motor and removed the electrical wires. Un-bolted the motor & wet-in from the whisperFlo housing. Removed the diffuser ( 2 small "allen" screws). Removed the impeller screw, Used a strap-wrench from Harbor Freight to remove the impeller. Removed the flange bracket from the motor. Replaced the two bushings
(impeller & flange bracket) and re-assembled. Total job took 2 hours. INYO Pools service staff was great, their DIY videos were excellent felt like they were there beside me the entire project. Delivery of parts was on-time and the price for the entire project was less than a local pool shop wanted for just the service call to give me an estimate of repair. My savings with this DIY project was ~$1250... I Love INYO Pools....this company rocks !!!!!

I submitted photos of my old pump and motor to INYOPools since I couldn't determine the ratings of the old pump since the old labels were weathered and worn. INYOPools provided me with multiple choices to replace the motor.
After receiving the replacement that I ordered from INYOPools, I removed the old unit and transferred the pump head to the new motor following the detailed instructions provided. I cleaned and rebuilt the pump head using new gaskets and seals prior to attaching it to the new motor. My pump head was attached to my filtration system with screw in couplings so reattachment was easy. It took about half a day to complete.

Followed directions supplied with new motor and seal. The only issue I have is that they didn't say tondead head the pump. I knew to do that from 8 yrs of pool ownership, but I could see how some people might not and lose prime. That would have added more time to the job. Otherwise, followed every step within the instructions. I should have replaced the big O ring that seals the motor to the pump, but it wasn't recommended. I used some silicone lube which is like Vaseline made from silicone. Again, I didn't see that in the instructions but knew from other repairs. I bought new collars to attach the wire to the pump and wires as per directions. I would say 90 minutes start to finish. I also dug out around the motor. The old one was partially buried, which probably is the reason it failed. I would say this is a good home for a do it yourselfer as long as you are comfortable with crimping wires, etc. it is 220 after all. Also, I would order a new impeller, since they are not expensive and removing the old one required a delicate touch and two people. One to hold the implellet with large channel locks and another to secure the drive shaft with a lock wrench

My family and I recently moved into a house that has a pool that has not been used in about 20 years. Of course the pool had a number of issues after sitting so long, one of which was a bad motor. Since all of the pool's equipment sits out in the open, most of the identifying marks were weather faded and unreadable. Therefore, I contacted a customer service rep at INYO who was able to provide all of the correct part numbers, based on my descriptions of the parts. The rep also recommended a couple of videos that would be the most applicable to my situation, and after viewing those, I was able to replace the pump motor and perform a tune up on the pump in about an hour. One of the most helpful things the rep told me was that the motor comes without any accompanying equipment, including a power cord. I found this very helpful because it clued me in to the fact that I also needed to order all the extra items I needed, rather than finding out when I opened the box. This saved me the trouble of having to place a second order, and then having to wait a couple of more days for those parts to come in. At any rate, I wired up the motor according to the included wiring diagram and followed the information I obtained from the videos on everything else and when I was done, the whole thing fired right up and has been running without any problems ever since.

Pros: Customer service, shipping time, price and product
Cons: None that I can think of
Best of all is the wonderful customer service help provided by Inyopools. The product was here in the time specified and the price was considerably less than the 5 other companies I checked with first. The product was as specified and ordered and hasn't given me any problems to date. It was installed about a month ago.
