What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?
Reply
Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I have the A.O. Smith Motor 7-193995-07, which all the specs are the same on the motor that I am looking at, but my motor has --- HP instead of saying what the HP is. The Jandy Stealth pool pump says 2.5 hp. Does this motor work with my pool pump, as it is a 2.0 HP motor?
Reply
Hi Lynn, This B843 motor will be the correct replacement motor for p/n 7-193995-07 that is mounted to your Jandy Stealth pump. This is a "full rate" motor, what that means is the it's rated a 2 HP but has a service factor of 1.3. When you multiply the rated hp by the service factor you get the total hp of that motor, which would be 2.6 HP.

Hi James, Gaskets for the pump does not come with the motor, you will have to purchase them separately. You will also have to know the manufacture and model of the pump housing that the motor connects to in order to locate the correct pump gaskets, o-rings and shaft seal.

What is the difference between the A.O. Smith B2843 and B285? I want to make sure I order the correct one

Hi, Darren. The difference between the two motors is the service factor (SF). The B2843 is full rate motor and the B2855 is an up rate motor. Check out our How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated guide.

Hi,
What is a generic pool pump motor replacement for Jandy Stealth pump SHPF1.5 PUMP, 1.5HP FULLRATED SHP SERIES. Rate HP: 1.50 X S.F: 1.47 = Total Motor HP 2.21
The current motor is Century EPlus Switchless.
Also what other part kit would I need or recommended.
Thank you,
Hau

The drop-in replacement is the 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2842; but another option for your pump is the 2 HP uprated, which equals the same total HP, 2 H.P Pool Motor Square Flange 56Y Up Rate - B859.To figure out the correct shaft seal for your Jandy Stealth SHPF, we would need to know the model number of the pump housing. An example of what the serial number would look like, P08FF0001.

Can you ship this motor to California?
Reply
Pat, no the A.O. Smith 2 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2843 is a single-speed motor and not California Title 20 compliant. In the second quarter of 2018 California began implementing stricter standards and regulations that dictate the sale and installation of electric motors under the Title 20 initiative. All new sales and installations in California must be for either variable speed or dual speed pump or motor. You can read more about it in this article: http://www.inyopools.com/Blog/californias-new-variable-speed-pool-pump-law/

My century motor 2hp work fine for 5 month now it is leaking water from bottom replaced seal kit 3 times still keep leaking any help would be great
Reply
I would recommend making sure that your model pump housing isn't a model that needs silicone to install the shaft seal. Also, be sure not to touch, dirty, or wet the ceramic sides of the seal as that will compromise it. Also, you may want to inspect all plastic parts to make sure there is not any warping or cracks creating the leak.

I would suggest double-checking if your model pump requires silicone to be used at the shaft seal, check for any hairlines cracks in any of the pump housing parts, and make sure that when installing the shaft seal not tot touch, dirty or wet the ceramic sides of it. Also, if you have a saltwater swimming pool consider using a heavy-duty shaft seal.

Hi Steven, most often Intermatic timers are used with these swimming pool motors. Just keep in mind that this motor is 208-230 voltage so you will want the voltage to match.

Is it OK to use only three of the four bolts connecting the motor to the pump if one is hard to get to?
Reply
It is not recommended to not use all of the bolts because it may leak and if there are any back resistance pressure issues that could cause the pump to come apart and damage it badly.

I have a Pentair 2HP Whisperflow pump WF-8 that has been progressively failing. For a few months it would flip the breaker after a rain but run fine once dry. More recently it was pumping about half capacity and the motor was very hot so I shut it down. Now it won't start at all, no sounds at all. Wires to the motor are hot so it's getting power. I'm assuming I need a new motor, is this the correct replacement? Which seal kit? Photo attached with details. Thanks!
Hi Steve Yes, this is the correct replacement motor for the motor included in your photo. This motor is the energy efficient version so you should save a little on your power bill. I need to replace the pump motor on my pool (motor keeps popping my breaker). Here are some picks of the motor and the pump. Looking for the correct motor replacement? Also, what would be the correct motor/pump replacement in case I go with replacing the whole thing?
Hello George. The Century motor B-2843 is an appropriate replacement motor for your existing Jandy Stealth pool pump. If you decide to just replace the motor, a replacement shaft seal will be required. Attached please find a tutorial on how to select the correct shaft seal. If you wish to replace the pump with a single-speed the Jandy Stealth model SHPM2.5 would be the direct replacement. If you wish to replace the pump with a variable speed (very energy efficient) then there are many options. The Jandy FloPro 2.7HP model VSFHP270JEP could be a replacement. Adjusting the pump's inlet and outlet plumbing may be required when changing to a completely different pump manufacturer/model. How To Select the Shaft Seal for a Jandy Stealth SHPF & SHPM Pump

I have a Century 7-177452-03 motor driving a WFE-8 Pentair pump. It takes a dozen tries to get it going. I changed the outside capacitor with a new 50mfe one and it still takes many attempts to get it going. Once it starts, it is smooth and continuous. What do I need to do to get it to start at the first attempt?
Reply
Capacitors are one of the main things to change out on a motor. If it is still not working I would suggest swapping out the entire motor on the pool pump. If this is not the issue it might be something with your impeller not turning properly.

The piggyback capacitor on my Century BPA452V1 motor blew up in a bad way (see photo). I tried a new capacitor (5mfe) and the motor iclicks and does not start. Do I have a blownup motor also?
At this point, I think it might be a good idea to replace your entire motor on your pool pump.

I have a 12 year old Whisperflo-28 2.0 hp pool pump and need to replace the motor again. Trying to decide if B2855 or B2843 is correct part. Total hp is higher on the B2843 per product info. Would either be ok?
Reply
Hello Jannna. The Pentair Whisperflo - 28 (original motor) is rated 2.0 HP, 1.1 SF for a total HP of 2.2. The Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2855 and the Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2843 are both compatible replacement motors. The B2843 will use slightly more electricity than the B2855. Both will circulate the identical GPM unless an impeller change concurrent with the B2843 is completed. The slight increase in THP with the B2843 may have a positive impact on motor longevity (no impeller change). The GOKIT32 contains the parts necessary for the motor change.
