What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

My motor fails to start. I check the motor and the capacitor is damage. The mfd and voltage range don´t see well. Can you help me with the range of the capacitor? Thanks.

Last time I had the pump replaced it cost $800. I decided to try fixing it myself. I watched the videos a couple of times then went to work. The old pump was fine, I just needed to replace the gaskets, but I kept the new pump motor for quick replacement one the old one does give out.
The quote from my pool repairman was $300 unless I needed a new motor. Doing it myself I saved most of that $300.
It was easy as long as you follow the directions in the video.

INYO Pool provided complete step by step video instruction which made the replacement simple. HOWEVER, a couple of lessons learned...
1.) be sure to order the Go-Kit (sold separately)...and furthermore, make sure you order the correct kit. My pump requires a "square" housing gasket...seems like the round gasket is more common. I checked my local pool supply shops, no luck. So I had to order on-line which delayed my repair a few days (no bueno).
2.) the plate seal should just slip off once everything has been removed. My experience required a wee-bit of muscle to coax it off.
Shorting out the condenser was easier than lead to believe based on on-line instructions, but maybe I was just lucky. Take all the precautions and follow the video.
Make sure you have a good worktop to work on. Save your knees a little.

After Texas freeze my Challenger 2hp pool pump started squealing pretty bad. I ordered a new 2hp motor from INYO Pools and had it shipped to my home. Step 1. After turning off the power to the pump pad and putting the multi-port in the closed position, I drained the pump and removed the motor and impeller assembly from the wet side of the pump, unhooked electrical connection to motor* and took assemble to work bench. 2. I took off the diffuser, impeller, and back plate off the old motor. 3. I installed back plate, new seals, impeller, and new impeller retaining screw onto new motor. 4. reinstalled diffuser and new diffuser o-ring and took assemble back to pool pad 5. connected electrical wires to new motor*, installed new housing o-ring, re-installed motor and impeller assemble back onto wet side of pump. 6. filled the strainer basket up with water. 7. put multi-port valve back into filter position, 8. Turned power back on to pool pad and turned on pump. 9. Checked for leaks.
*Make sure you are familiar with basic electrical connections before attempting this repair. If you are not, have a pool professional install the motor. It’s not worth saving a few bucks if your house burns down or worse yet, you severely injure yourself or get killed in the attempt to fix your pool pump.

Being a female and not all that hip on motor repair, I looked at many youtube repair videos. I knew what kind of motor I needed because I was replacing one and I wanted the same as I had. I ordered the motor and gasket pack and it arrived very quickly. So I turned off the electricity FIRST! then I disconnected the electrical connections to the motor. Took all the bolts out and took the motor off the pump parts. My main problem is the impeller had fused to the motor shaft which presented a big problem. Couldn't get it to unscrew. I did however finallyhave to demolish the impeller and had to dremmel the metal cap that was on the impeller to get it off. This was a very hard project. Took me several hours. But then I just looked at the videos again and put all the pieces back together per the videos. The youtube videos are amazing. Even someone inexperienced can do this repair with the step by step instructions. Also, very helpful is to take pictures of each step and what things look like and how wires are connected. You can refer back and say, oh, this goes like this and this was like this. Very smug with myself for having done this alone. So don't pay those pool people to do this for you. It may take a lot longer than the videos, but if you take your time and are careful and deliberate, you can get it done. Just remember the electricity!!!

Pretty straight forward if you have basic skills and tools. The most difficult part for me was removing the impeller from the shaft on the old motor. It was so tight that I cracked the impeller with a pipe wrench (my bad). Had to order a new impeller and go buy a strap wrench that fit over the outer edge of the impeller to break it loose. The good thing about the Challenger motor is that you don't have to remove the back end and move internal parts to access the end of the shaft. (The INYO video uses a Hayward motor which is more involved.) It has a small plastic cover over the shaft end that sticks out the back of the motor. Easy to grip when turning the impeller. Otherwise the video shows just how simple it can be.

Heads up order the Go-Kit (sold separately) to ensure yo have all the rubber / ball bearing parts needed for a thorough replacement. NOTE: Be sure to order the correct kit, some pumps use a SQUARE housing gasket...while others use a round gasket.

(3 out of 5 stars) Good motor, but test it before you plumb it up
Reviewed By: Inyo Customer ()
Well, the second motor I received is fine, but the first one would not roll over, so it was a drag to get it all set up only to find the motor was defective. Inyo Pools sent me a second one right away no problem, and it was fine. I would rate it a five if the first motor had not been defective. Tip- once you get the motor, put a couple of leads on it before you totally unbox it to make sure it runs. (Very uncommon to get a defective electric motor in my experience.)

The product was here in the time specified and the price was considerably less than the 5 other companies I checked with first. The product was as specified and ordered and hasn't given me any problems to date. It was installed about a month ago.
