What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Is my motor bad? What do you have and how much?
Reply
Hi Ed, It sounds like the bearings is going bad on the motor. Since the motor is 15 years old I would recommend replacing the entire motor. The A.O. Smith 2 HP Full-Rated 56J Motor (B130) would be the correct replacement motor based on the part # 7-159988-06.

What motor bearing part number do I need to order for this B855 motor?
When I replace the bearings, what else should I replace?
Reply
Hi Jesse, You would need (1) 304 Bearing (6304) for the Shaft End and (1) 203 Bearing (62032RS) for the Opposite Shaft End. It is also recommended that you replace the shaft seal and the o-rings within the pump housing.

Is this motor already preset for 230 volts or is there a switch that has to be placed for 230 volts?
Also I have a red, black and green ground coming to the motor. Would the Red and the black wires go to L1 and L2? The reason I ask is because internally there is a white wire on L2. The terminals in the motor are "B", "L1", "L2", and "A". Your help is greatly appreciated.
Reply
Hi Ed, The motor comes set for 230 volts. When wiring the motor for 230 volts both lines are115 volts so it will not matter if the "red" or "black" wire goes to "L1" or "L2". The "green" would go to the ground.

My old motor has locked up after about 6 years. It appears you have a replacement for $245+ but my frame says Y56Y and your listing only says "56Y". Is this the same thing? Otherwise everything seems the same.

Hello, The Y56Y and the 56Y are the same frame. As long as the specs match, this motor will work. Be sure to replace the pump seals as well.

I have this motor. When I turn it on the motor hums and the shaft spins slowly. Then after about 20 seconds the safety in the motor cuts it off. I replaced the capacitor but still same result. When off the shaft spins freely in either direction. Any ideas? Motor is 5 years old. Was running 10-12 hours a day until it stopped a few days ago. Thanks

Jason,If a ne capacitor didn't solve your issue, sounds like buying a new motor may be your best option. 5 years is a pretty good life line for a motor operating that consistently.

I have a Franklin 1081 pool pump motor. The bearings are starting to squeal. I know the motor is at least 25 years old. I'm thinking replacing the bearings might be wasting time and money on a 25-30 year old pump as I might just be chasing more problems. Or it might be a great motor that can last 50 years. What do you think? My pool is 22k gallons 18 X 36 X 7 deep in case you recommend new pump. I have a fairly new Hayward filter model C3025.

Bearings are inexpensive compared to a new pump or motor. Me personally, I would try to keep that motor going as long as possible. They don't make motors that last 25 years anymore.

Hello Carlos- The model number you provided is for a motor, the A.O. Smith 2 H.P Square Flange Full Rate Motor - SQ1202. You can click on the link to see the current pricing. The manual says replacement motor should be B865SE which appears to be unavailable and replaced by a different newer model. Can you confirm which motor will fit my pump based on the info provided? Pictures attached.
The B865SE 2-HP Uprated has been discontinued, but the current replacement is the B2842 1.5HP Full rated Energy Efficient. Both of these motors have matching total horsepower ratings of 2.2- HP (Listed HP x Service Factor (SF) = Total HP). This B855 will work, but it would cost more to run because it is a standard efficiency and not an EE.

I have a Jandy pump model phpf1.5. Will this motor work?
Reply
Yes, this is the correct replacement motor for the Jandy phpf1.5. You will also need a shaft seal when you replace your motor. Please take a look at the serial # on your pump and if your serial # is before Before P08FF0001 then you will need this Before P08FF0001 Shaft Seal and if your serial # is After P08FF0001 then you will need this After P08FF0001 Shaft Seal. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

Hi - Can you tell me if this motor will be a suitable replacement for my Pentair Challenger pool pump motor and what is the best seal kit to purchase with it? I've attached a picture below.
The A.O. Smith 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2858 is the correct motor for replacement. The Pentair Shaft Seal OEM 5/8" - 354545S can be installed on both CHII or CFII model Challengers. Please check the service tag on the pump, not the motor for the model number verification of CHII or CFII. If it confirms CHII you may order the Gokit5 or Gokit5Salt If you have the CFII Series, you will need to itemize all O-Rings.
Reply
So even though my current Pentair motor (7-168454-25) is 2 HP, I can go with the AO Smith 1.5 HP? The pump is a CHII series.

Miles, That is correct, check out our How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated guide. You will also need to get the Challenger CH Series Tune Up Kit - GOKIT5 or GOKIT5SALT.

Good Afternoon, looking to replace my Pentair Part No. 7-177476-20. Should probably purchase a seal kit for the pump also. DO you have recommendations. I presume this is the motor I require.
Hi,
I found three electrical wires connected to the old motor, two are yellow colors and one green.
I assume both yellow wires are hot.
Does it matter which yellow wire is connected to Zone 1 or 3 on the motor? Thanks.
Reply
Most likely the two yellows are hot however I would recommend using a multimeter on those leads to test and be sure. If so, then you are correct that at 220/240 voltage each lead would not matter if either is on terminal 1 or 2.

Hi,
I got a new B855 motor and installed with all new US Seal PS1000 seals and gaskets for a Whisper Flo pump.
However water is leaking through the bottom of the motor enclosure.
I have followed closely the step by step instructions for replacing the seals and installing the motor.
Can you help? Thanks.
Reply
So these seals can easily be compromised if touched, wet or dirtied on the ceramic sides of the seal. You may be able to clean it off with rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth. Also, that seal requires some silicone to be used on the seal plate where that portion of the seal is placed into the seal plate.

My motor makes a hummimg noise but does not push water.Might I have to replace the pump as well?
Reply
Unfortunately the B855 is not a compatible replacement for your B129. Please click here to be directed to your single speed model motor replacement. Also, most commonly the reason for a motor to hum and not move any water is due to either the start capacitor failing or the motor has failed. You can disassemble the motor from the pump housing to inspect the parts and bench test it to be sure, and also test the capacitor.

Hi, John. The B855 can be used to replace P/N 71315. However, the impeller will NOT need to be changed since the THP of both motors match. The B2843 is the next size up to P/N 71315.

Hi. Does the B855 Centurion motor have a start capacitor in addition to the run capacitor? And if so do you stock start capacitors?
As I understand it the run capacitor is mounted on the top, (under the steel hood or cowling).
(My problem is the motor is reluctant to start but if i turn the motor drive shaft at the rear of the motor it spins up and runs fine)

What do you suggest?
Hi, Anthony. The B2748 motor is the correct replacement. The stand is part of the pump housing and not the motor.

So I received the new motor from you and I’m in the process of taking apart the old motor. I’ve hit a snag and I’m not sure what to do. I think I’ve removed the impeller but there’s shaft seal does not want to come off. Is it supposed to be attached to the impeller? Also, how does the mounting bracket come off? Your installation videos suggest there are (4) bolts holding it in place but don’t see them.
Please see How to Replace a Shaft Seal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moy34mj_7To&feature=em-subs_digest On this pump the bolts are located on the rear of the motor and the seal plate.

Yes you can but you may have a little bit of re-plumbing as the plumbing ports are not in the exact same location. You will also lose a little bit of flow by going down from 2 HP to 1.5 HP so if your pump is powering spa jets, water features or solar you may not want to consider the downgrade in HP.

Hi Kenneth, The Energy Flo RS pump was sold exclusively through Leslies. It looks to be the same pump as this Hayward TriStar Pump but we are unable to get 100% confirmation. If you want to take a quick look at the TriStar Parts Diagram and let us know if this looks like your pump. If so then we can supply you needed parts to upgrade to 2 HP. Another option is to remove the impeller from your pump and let us know if there any part #'s stamped into the impeller.

Hello David. Thank you for the pictures. From the pump lid, C3-139P1, I was able to determine that you have a Stay-rite Dura-Glas or Sta-rite Max-E-Glas. If you currently have a 2 horsepower motor, the Century B855 is the appropriate replacement. A new shaft seal should be installed when the motor is replaced. I would suggest a tune-up kit, GOKIT6, which also contains rubber gaskets and o rings that should also be replaced. The GOKIT54 can also be used by simply removing the copper cone insert from the seal plate. At times, working with the copper cone insert can be problematic. I would recommend the GOKIT54. need to replace motor 2 hp century motor B2748. my question: can I put a 3hp motor on instead of 2hp?
Reply
I do not recommend changing your motor from 2HP up to 3HP. You also need to change out other internal parts like the impeller. You also need to know if you pool filter can handle the new GPM of the 3HP motor. I would suggest buying a 3HP pump and making sure you have a compatible filter if you go this route. If not I would stick with the 2HP.

My 1st y56y 1.5hp AO Smith lasted 10 years. The 2nd one was used but had the bearings replaced and lasted about 2 years. Recently I bought a new motor from Amazon and it is super quiet but also super underpowered and also it shuts off when the temp outside reachs 90° My questions are: can I goto a 2 horsepower? is it common for these new China motors to be so weak? Also I have the spring and ceramic seal but I'm looking for the gaskets for the impeller and the pump? Thanks
It is possible to go up in HP, but I do not recommend it. Pumps are made for a certain HP. So the internals like the impeller and diffuser are made for that HP. So all of those would need to be replaced. You also would need to make sure your filter can handle the GPM of the new HP pump. So you might have to upgrade your pool filter. As far as motors go from China. Most motors come from China nowadays. The issue is buying off of Amazon and not knowing who is selling that motor. The sellers on Amazon want cheap products. We have found a lot of issues with the swimming pool pumps, filters, and motors being sold on Amazon

Dave, Yes you have the right motor, I need more information to answer about the capacitor. Usually, there is a sticker on the capacitor that lets me know the type it is. Also, be careful we handing a capacitor. They can hold a charge and give you a good zap.

Hi, My water pool Pump broken and I think it is from the motor/coil portion as I could see spark coming out of this part.
Pump's brand is Stealth SHPF 2.0 which is 2 HP. I wonder if this motor is compatible with what I have installed on the current broken pump. I have attached the pictures and I appreciate if you could help me with that.
Hi Amir, your SHPF2.0-2 pump left the factory with a 2-speed motor; the motor in the picture is single speed which we are unable to offer you due to the Title 20 compliance laws in California. The good news is that the original replacement motor for the pump (this B2984 motor) is compliant. Your other option would be to get this variable-speed ECM27SQU motor which can really save you on your electric bill when it is set up properly.

Hi,
I’m looking for a replacement motor for my older Jandy SHPM 2.0 Pump (Motor specs attached). The current motor is still running, but I’m looking for more energy efficient alternatives e.g. dual speed, or even variable speed. However, I would also like to reuse the existing pump housing/body, and other parts, if possible. Just recently replaced the impeller, diffuser, and seals.
Which motor do you recommend?

Hello J, So flow rates will vary depending on the pump housing model that this motor will be mounted to. Here is the Hayward Super pump which uses essentially the same type of motor and and the Pentair Superflo that also does and you can view the flow charts to see the difference. Essentially you will want to confirm your front pump housing model in order to look up its particular flow chart document to confirm its specific flow rate.
