I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I'm considering the Pentair WF4 #11580 pump with 1 hp motor to replace my old unit. Does this motor have a 56Y frame? (I want to be able to keep my old pump as a spare).
Reply
Yes the current model pump has a 56Y framed motor

Does this pump have a switch to go between filter and backwash?
Reply
No this is just a pump. It sounds like you are looking for a multiport or slide valve for the filter. Those are relevant to the filter model.

(4 out of 5 stars) Whisper Flo Installation

Pros: Weight is good and the input and output connections replaced the prior pump nearly exactly.
Cons: Seal concerns on lid
I replaced the DuraGlas pump that I had used for 16 years on my in ground 33,000 gallon pool. The pump started fine and is working as expected. I am seeing an air leak around the seal on the filter cap. I have treated the seal with teflon and hope that it resolves the issue. The seal does not seat into the housing so I am not sure if it will work or not. Other than that and a small leak on the back fitting (plan to cut it out and reinstall with a sealant)the process was painless and I am back to circulation in the pool as I had hoped.
