I am replacing 2 Challenger 2.5hp pumps that are installed in parallel feeding an inground 45,000 gal pool. They are old (1995??). The combined flow rate is measuring 140gpm. The original pool drawings from 1960 indicate a single 5hp pump. I would like to go back to a single pump. Does this 3hp Intellifloxf vsf seem like the right choice. I might have thought a 5hp might be required to get to the right flow rate.
Hi Dan, I'm thinking you might want to go with this 5 HP Hayward Pump however we would suggest getting local inspector to make sure the pump doesn't exceed the flow rate allowed by your main drain. When you start using these larger HP pumps then entrapment becomes a concern as you want to make sure the pool stays safe for your swimmers.

I'm looking to replace a 1.5hp Pentair Challenger series pump. I want efficiency and like this pump but not sure if it's too much for my pool. I have a simple setup: 25K inground w/no spa and no water features (other than a blade water fall activated by manually diverting the return valve). The Pentair has been enough so I don't need 3hp but I'm thinking the variable speed will provide a sweet spot I can run at while saving energy. What are your thoughts or recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Hi Scott, Thanks for the great question, yes we agree that this 3 HP Pentair Pump is probably overkill for your situation especially if the 1.5 HP has been working fine. I think going with this 1.65 HP Waterway Power Defender Variable Speed Pump would be ideal. It would give you the best of both worlds the 1.65 HP needed for your pool but the ability to vary the HP which will save you a ton on your operational costs.
