I have an Intex metal frame 15' round by 42" deep pool. Is this filter too big for this pool?
Reply
The Hayward VL40T32 would be a perfect system for an 15' round Intex pool. We have upgraded many Intex pools with this Hayward pump and filter with great success.

Regarding the capacity, is the rating amount of water higher than 9,000, up to 11,000 ? Is it more than adequate for 9,000 gallons ?
Reply
Thank you for contacting INYO Pools. The "Suitable for above ground pools up to 11,000 gallons". Is just a guide line, we actually recommend customer go a little higher than the recommended equipment, because this pump is designed to "turnover" (or clean) the water very 8 hours. So in your case this will run more efficient and turnover all the pool water in about 6.5 hours. You can still run it more or less depending on how dirty your pool gets. because this is designed to filter and clean a pool with 11000 gallons it will just run more efficiently and keep the system cleaner than a system designed for a 9000 gallon pool.

Does the Hayward VL40T32 come with hoses and sand?
Reply
The filter system comes with hoses. Hayward made the VL40T32 specifically for intex/soft-sided pools. The system does not come with sand. You can purchase silica/filter sand at any local pool supply store.

If the spider gasket goes bad on the valve for this filter can it be replaced or do I need to buy a whole new valve?
Reply
On this filter you would need to purchase the diverter to replace the spider gasket, so it would not be the entire valve, it is basically the handle assembly.

I have a 18' x 52" hard side pool with a 40gpm set up that i need to replace.
Should i go back with size are is that overkill
Reply
The 40 gpm pump is sufficient for an 18' round pool. It would not be overkill.

Would a Hayward sand filter model vl40t32 work on a 24' x 4' pool?
Reply
The VL40T32 would be a little small for a 24' Round pool. I would suggest our 18" Sand Filter W/ 3/4 HP Pump which we currently have on sale for $199, this system would have roughly twice the filter capacity as this Hayward system and at a lower price.

Hi, I have this pump and over the winter the black container (with the clear top that holds the filter) froze and cracked, can I buy a replacement without buying the whole unit? If so what's that particular part called?

Matt, Are you referring to the pump lid? We do carry parts for the VL40T32.

What size sand filter do I need for a 28'x4' above ground pool?

Hello, For a 28' round pool, I would recommend at least an 18" sand filter system.
Reply
I was wandering if this filter system would be good for my 11' 21' 48" pool
Reply
Hi, The Hayward VL Series Sand Filter Systems can work for your pool if it does not get dirty and bather load, the Hayward Pump & Filter S144T Filter W/ 40 GPM Pump would be a more suitable system.

I have an Intex 22' × 52" ultra frame pool that I'd like to upgrade the pump and filter to a sand filter and pump. What do you recommend.

Hi Dom, The Hayward Pump & Filter S180T Filter w/ 1 HP Matrix Pump will be your best size pump and filter for your size pool.

We have a 16'x48"Iintex pool with solar heater system and a stock Intex pump/filter. What would you recomedt for a replacement pump and sand filter for this setup.
Reply
Based on the pool gallons and a long as the solar rests on the ground you can use any 3/4 hp pump/sand filter combo. You can view the options we have to offer on this above ground pool pump and filter page.

Pool size is 16' x 30' x 3.5' and is partially above ground / vinyl lined. There is no bottom drain, just the skimmer. Currently using a sand filter and 1hp pump....but isn't filtering well. Have cleaned out filter and replaced sand and I still can't see the bottom of pool. Very cloudy and have done all recommended chemicals. Thinking it's time to replace the filter/pump - recommended size please?

Hi Anna, I would recommend going with a 19" Sand filter with a 1 hp pump. You can choose from our selection of Above Ground Pool Pump & Filter.

I have a 13,500 gallon 24 foot round about ground pool that I have used cartridge filters and want to switch to sand filter system. What size pump is recommended and do you offer a 2 speed pump? Please recommend a system for my use.

Hi Terry, The Waterway Clearwater 19" Sand Filter W/ 1 HP 2 SPD Pump would the preferred size dual speed pump and filter but you can go with the Hayward S180T Filter w/ 1.5 HP Matrix Pump 2-Speed (S180T932S).

I have a 12' x 48" above ground pool that I just use for myself to cool down with in the summer. I like a strong flow of water with two speeds. What pump system would you recommend for me?
Reply
HI Joe, Depending on how strong you want the water flowing, the Carefree 19" Sand System, 1.0 HP, 2-Speed Pump, 6' NEMA Cord or the Hayward S180T Filter w/ 1.5 HP Matrix Pump 2-Speed would be good.

What is the volume of water pumped by this system and the head when the filter is clean and the piping to the pool is over sized with no net friction resistance?
Can this pump and filter system be placed 10' below the surface level of the pool?
Does this system have an automatic or manual backwash for the sand filter?
Reply
John, the Hayward VL Series Sand Filter System VL40t32 has a flow rate of 30 gpm. The filter will work with the filter being below the surface of the pool and the valve is a manual backwash valve.

i have an intex oval pool the size is 10' x 18' x 36" 3000 gal. I am currently using your smallest sand filter system , for a 16 x 16x 36 1700 gal. will this system also work for the larger oval pool.
Thanks Sam

This pump and filter combination provides enough turnover to maintain an 11,000-gallon pool. I do not see a problem with this filtering a 3000-gallon pool. Enjoy!!!

I just bought a Hayward v series 40732. I cannot get it to prime, it will backwash and rinse but not prime, is there an air release valve I am not seeing? any suggestions.
Reply
Hi Holly, I don't believe this filter has an air relief valve. What you can do is when the pump is running, slowly unscrew the pressure gauge once you hear air starting to purge stop unscrewing the gauge. Let all of the air purge from the system and once water starts coming out of the hole where the gauge is then screw the gauge back in.

This would be a little small for a 24' round pool. For your pool we would suggest a Jacuzzi 1 HP Pump w/ 16" Sand Filter.

I have a leak somewhere in our pool filter. There doesn't seem to be any water around the top of the filter it is at the bottom. I was wondering do you think it could be fixed or does it need to be replaced? What size of filter do I need it is a 24 ft round pool, 52 inches deep.

Hi Penny, If the filter is more than 5 years old then I will recommend replacing it with the Hayward S144T1540S or S166T92S.

If the HAYWARD VL40T32 VL does not have an on/off switch, I assume you have to unplug it during periods you don't want it running??

Hi Matt, Yes, you will have to plug in and out the unit when you want to use it or you can use the P1101 Timer.

I have a 22 feet 52 in pool i bought a hayward sand filter model vl40t32 I'm having trouble keeping it primed do you have to backwash and rinse everytime you want to prime it and how do you adjust water flow is it big enough to filter my pool i had a cartilage pump sfs2000 wanted a pump a little bigger can i put a higher power pump motor on this setup or do I have to buy a whole new system
Reply
Hi, You do not have to backwash and rinse every time you need to prime the pump just make sure the pump and lines are filled with water. You can not put a larger pump on this system you will have to change the entire system. The VL40T32 Owner's Manual has priming and operating instructions.

How do I increase the PSi - As it stands I am at 4 PSI and the label says 29
Reply
Hi Bea, You do not need to increase the pressure of the filter, as the filter gets dirty. The pressure on the label is the maximum operating pressure of the filter but the lower the actual pressure is the better.

I have a Coleman 18x48 Metal Frame above ground pool. It has one A port and two B ports. Will this pump work and adapt to it? Or will I have to buy extra parts to make it fit.

Hello John, The model VL40T32 Hayward VL Series Sand Filter Systems comes with 1.25" & 1.5" adapters for intex line pools. If you would like to see other features for the system click the link above to look at all specifications.

What should I do if the motor isn't running while plugged in?

This sounds like the motor has failed. You can replace the PUMP W/O STRAINER - VLX4009. The cost of this item is almost as much as a complete Hayward VL Series Sand Filter Systems - VL40T32.

How do you drain a vl4ot32 tank for winterizing? There is no drain valve on the bottom of the tank.
Thanks.
Reply
Hello Tom, from the paperwork from Hayward for this particular unit it has WINTERIZING 1. Lift control valve handle and rotate so as to set pointer on valve top between any two positions. Leave valve in this “inactive" position. 2. Remove valve from the filter body. Allow it to completely drain. Set the valve in a dry place. 3. Drain the water from the tank. 4. Remove the strainer housing from the pump. 5. Drain and winterize pump.

Reply to your answer to me below.....
Yes, I have these instructions. My question is how do you drain the tank. The only way I see is to tip it over and drain as you would do with a bucket of water. This also will drain the sand, which doesn't make sense. There is no drain valve on the bottom of the tank. There must be an alternative
Thanks.
Reply
Correct, there is no drain plug on the bottom of the tank. You can use a shop vac to vacuum the water out or safely tip the filter over to drain the water out.

Vl40t32 valve back wash and filter leters are all gone can you give me some info on how to opperate this system.

Joe, Unfortunately we do not stock this product and do not have any pictures of the top of the valve. I would suggest calling Hayward At 908-355-7995 to see if they can tell you the exact positioning.

Can this also be used on a Coleman 15' x 48" pool and can a vacuum be used with this system?

Hello, yes this unit can be used on a Coleman 15x48' pool, in regards to a vacuum this can use a standard manual vacuum.

Is there a power switch on the model VL40T32. Or do you just plug in and unplug to power it off? I have the pump all ready to go and nothing. Brand new pump I might add. Just wasn't sure if I was missing something?
Reply
The pump does not have a power switch. We would suggest this Above Ground Pool Pump Timer which you plug the pump into and then you can set the timer to turn the pump on and off.

How do I assemble the VL40t32?
Reply
Hi, Shatze. Instructions are located in the VLSeries Owners and Operation Manual.
Reply
Hi. I assembled the pump. When we tuen it on. Water shoots out of top pf pump. Could it be because we need a new o ring or possibly there's sand under ring causing it not to seal
Reply
I believe you've answered your own question here, because the black, rubber O ring that fits between the pump top and the tank must fit securely into the round groove in the tank top. The plastic clamp that holds the top onto the tank must also be tightened completely to hold the top, O ring, and tank together.

As it is a 6 ft cord can it be run with a heavy duty extension cord? Less than 20'?
Reply
Hi, Linda. The manufacturer does not recommend the use of an extension cord. The pump must be plugged directly into an outlet.

I have an 18 x 48 Coleman round pool. I just doesn't feel like its pushing the water hard enough. What could be the problem? Suggestions?
Reply
Hi Ben, The Coleman Pools are notorious for coming with really small pump and filter systems. I would suggest upgrading to something like the PL1511 PureLine 1 HP Pump with 19" Sand Filter System this would be a huge upgrade from your current filtration system. It's you may need one of these Pool Adapters to hook to the new hoses to the pool.

we have a hayward sand filter model VL40T32. We have been backflushing today 4 times. It will be ok for awhile and then all of a sudden no water coming through the filter on the pool. Do we need more sand? We added what it called for when we got it 2 yrs. ago and it says its good for about 5 yrs. Also do we run the filter system all the time?

Hi. If your pool is not really dirty then the filter is working on cleaning up your pool. If it is not then the sand may need to be changed.

Does it matter the direction the the top lever selector is turned And if so, what do i need to do to repair?

It does matter which setting the valve is on. You should have it set to FILTER most of the time and you can use BACKWASH when the filter gets dirty. The manual for it will explain it and you can check out our article on How does my multiport valve work? and How To Maintain and Repair Your Multiport Valve for more great tips.
