What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.
Reply
What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

Will this replace my Hayward northstar sp1615z1mnsc?
Reply
Mike- The A.O. Smith 2 HP Up Rated Northstar Replacement Motor (USN1202) will be a replacement for your Northstar pump, I would also recommend that you get the shaft seal for your pump so that you don't leak and void the motor warranty. The seal you would want is , 5112-216 (SPX3200SA), or you can get the salt water seal, 5250-250 (PS-4280).
Reply
Would you recommend purchasing the seal tune up kit or just the heavy duty shaft seal (5250-250 (PS-4280)) when replacing this motor for a salt water pool? What is the part number for the seal tune up kit for this model pump?
Reply
Hi Red, The Heavy Duty Shaft Seal (PS-4280) would be the recommended choice to use in a salt water pool. There is only a Tune Up Kit for the 200-2007 Hayward North Star model not the 2008-current model. The PS-4280 can only be used on the 2008-current models, you would havr to purchase the seals separately.

What is the start capacitor part number for this motor?
Reply
Hello Fred - The USN1202 only has a run capacitor. The part number is 5270-02.
Reply
I am confused as to why this is a "run" capacitor as opposed to a "start" capacitor as when they go bad the motor hums but will not start. I have replaced a few of these on my USN1202 under this exact circumstance. I can always start and "run" the motor with a bad capacitor while awaiting delivery of a new capacitor by abruptly turning the motor with a wrench while it's humming. Starts right up continues to run. So isn't this a "start" capacitor?

looking for capacitor requirements for the AO Smith SP1615Z1MNSC motor Does it use the same capacitor size requirements as the usn 1202 listed above part 5270-02

On the capacitor you need there will be a number starting with UF or MFD. Find out what your number is.Type it in in the search bar at inyopools.com.

is the AO Smith USN 1202 the same as the Hayward SPX1615Z1MS? I have a Hayward Northstar 2HP pool pump model # SP4015X20NS, and I wanted to replace the motor. I notice you carry both motors but the AO Smith is cheaper. If it's really the same motor and will work just as well than I will order the AO Smith.

Hi Mike, Yes the USN1202 is the same motor and will work just as well. Go with the USN1202.

I need a replacement for my Hayward northstar sp4015x20ns pump, also need a motor shaft seal, gasket diffuser and plastic o ring. I see that the A.O. Smith USN 1202 is a suitable replacement for the motor, but how do I make sure I order the seal, gasket diffuser and plastic o ring correctly, to fit the a o smith?

Hi, Allison. The Century USN1202 Motor is the correct replacement, however, you will need to know when the pump was manufactured in order to locate the correct seals. If you can locate the housing serial number and call Hayward @ (908) 355-7995.

Hi, I currently have this pump motor, but I want to replace the entire pump and motor, will the SP2615X20 work?
Reply
Hi Jonas, normally the USN1202 is used on a Hayward Northstar Pump and if that is the pump you have then the Hayward SP2615X20 2 HP Pump would be a good replacement. I also really like the PL2603 PureLine Prime 2 HP Pump as it has 2" plumbing connections vs. the smaller 1.5" ports on the Super Pump. Either way you go you will have some slight re-plumbing as the plumbing ports on the pumps are not in the exact same location.

My current motor is a O.A.Smith SP1615Z1MNSC, SF1.2, & Y56J frame. The serial number is 229093M. Is this AO Smith USN1202 the exact replacement? And what kit would be required? The motor is about 4 years old and the pump is about 15 years old

Mike, The USN1202 is the correct replacement for the SP1615Z1MNSC. In order to recommend the shaft seal, we will need to know the pump model.

Thanks for the quick answer re: the pump motor. The pump itself is a Hayward SP4015X20 with SER#21110908050927008. Are you able to tell the age from that or do I need to contact Hayward?

Hi I have a Hayward Northstar 2.00HP pump. The fully assembled pump has a model of SP4015X20. The motor on it is bad. I want to replace the motor. The motor has a part number of SP1615Z1MNSR (see screenshot). I can't find that exact part number on your site but the closest is your SPX1615Z1MNS item. That item says it has alternate part numbers of SP1615Z1MNS and SP1615Z1MNSC.... both of which are similar but missing the "R" at the end like my model. What's the difference and will it fit?
My SP4015X20NS model Northstar has serial ID 21110509050127007. Can you please tell me what year this was made? Is this the correct motor for replacement? What else should I replace when I replace the motor? Diffuser, Diffuser O ring, Impeller assembly....anything else?

Hi, Chad. Your model pump was manufactured in September of 2005. This USN1202 is the correct replacement motor. As for the other parts, they are all listed on the Hayward Northstar Pump 1998 to 2007 Parts Diagram.

Could I upgrade to the full rate pump without issue? I confirmed that what you listed is the model I have but it has a really hard time running the skimmer and vacuum at the same time. I have to keep both at about half intake at the valves. A hair extra power would be nice.

Hi, Chad. You can upgrade the motor; however, you will have to upgrade the impeller as well in order to get the benefits.

Hi, Chad. Part # SPX4020CKIT is the nest size up impeller. You will need to use Motor # SPX1620Z1BNS.

Is the USN1202 the correct replacement motor and what shaft seal or impeller kit do I need and does the kit include shaft seal? Also, what is the age of my pump?
Hi, Debbie. This USN1202 is the correct replacement motor. You will need the Impeller Kit - SPX4015CKIT or the Pump Shaft Seal - SPX4000SA2 (OEM), PS-3890 (Generic), or PS-4280 (Heavy Duty). Your pump was manufactured in August 2009.

I have a Hayward Northstar pump that is used on my spa pumps. This pump is humming and needs to be replaced. The current motor is sn1202 2 hp motor. Does it make any sense to upgrade to 2 1/2 hp motor for more water flow when the spa is on? I have 2" piping.

If the water flow was fine before, then I would stick to the same horsepower motor and setup you currently have. The page for your motor is the SN1202 - 2 HP Full Rate NorthStar

Hi I want to replace my current engine. This was not the original engine with my Northstar pump but it worked fine until it went. I want to reorder a tune up kit and new empeller also. Can you confirm that USN1202 will work on my hayward and also the correct gasket seals and tune ups etc.
Hi, Michael. This USN1202 is the correct replacement for the motor in the picture provided. As for the Impeller Kit, the P/N is SPX4015CKIT. We will need to know the age or pump style you have in order to determine if the NorthStar 4000 Series Pumps (Pre-2003) Tune Up Kit - GOKIT66 will work with your pump.

I installed the USN1202 motor in June 2018, and it sounds like the bearing are going bad already. Any recommendations?
Hi, Edward. You can either replace the Bearings (1) 62032RS and (1) 63042RS or replace the motor. Bearings usually fail from water damage.

If I buy a new motor, what can I do to protect it? Over 40 years with houses with pools, I have never had a motor last less than 10 years. Imagine my disappointment when this one only lasted 18 moths.

Edward, Keep the area dry and clean.
