What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I'm replacing my 20year old K48L2PA105 motor. Does this replacement come with a new shaft seal? If not, what is the part number. Thank you

Cory, The motor does not come with a shaft seal. The seal is dependent on the make and model of the pump housing not the motor.

What the difference between this model and "1 HP Motor EE - Full Rate (B2841, B2841V1)"?
I have a Pentair Whisperflo WF-26 / 011773 / 1.5 HP / 1.65 S.F. HP.
Which one should I buy?
Thnx,
Reply
Hi. The difference between the QC1102 and the B2841 motors are the Frame size. The QC1102 has a 48Y frame which is smaller than the B2841 which has a 56Y frame. Either motor is compatible with Pentair Whisperflo WF-26. The Pentair Whisperflo Tune Up Kit GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT is the correct kit for that pump.

A.O. Smith pump Mod. K48L2PA101A1 finally died. I am looking to upgrade to one of the variable speed motors. Can you tell me what pump and seal kit (If needed) would be ideal for me please?
The VS motor replacement that you would need is the model ECM16SQU. And for the seal kit, you will need to provide us with the model name or number of the front pump housing that the motor bolts to so we can cross-reference those seals. If you cannot locate that information then you can always send us an image of that to upload@inyopools.com so we can assist.

How critical is it for water to travel from pool to heater and back to raise temp, both pumps are 2" in and out with 3450 RPM`s with same voltage, except one was a older 2HP and the new one is 1hp with a 1.65 s.f.

Hi. It is very critical to ensure that the unit functions properly and as intended. Heaters will not work without the proper water flow.

Hi Jeff, this is the correct single speed replacement motor for the motor model k48l2pa105. You should not need to upgrade the impeller. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

I need to replace a Century SQ1102 motor. Are there upgrade options that are quieter?
Reply
Hi Dennis, the single-speed motors all drone on to one extent or another, but many people find that the variable-speed motors are quieter than the regular single-speed motors, especially if you turn the speed down from the maximum. This V-Green 1.65 HP Square Flange 48Y Variable Speed Motor - ECM16SQU would be a perfect replacement for your old SQ1102 and it could also pay for itself over time as long as you set it up correctly. Your local city or utility company may offer a rebate for the purchase price of it as well.

You can switch out your current motor for a variable-speed unit, and you would be able to keep your current wet end housing. The recommended variable speed upgrade for your motor would be the Century (A.O. Smith) V-Green EVO 1.65 HP Up Rate VS Motor, Square Flange 48Y Frame, Variable Speed - Model EVQ165.
