What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?
Reply
Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

How can I tell whether or not my motor is a dual or single speed?
Reply
Most dual speed motors will have a toggle switch that will allow you to adjust the motor speed to either high or low. Another way to tell if your motor is dual speed is by looking at the RPM's on the motor specifications label. If there are two RPM's listed such as: 1725/3450 then motor is dual speed. If there is only one RPM, then motor is single speed.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

How do you switch from one speed to the other on this motor?
Reply
Hi Morales, On this motor you would need a seperate external control to switch from high speed to low speed. If you currently have a standard yellow dial timer then you require the purchase of a T106R dual speed pump timer. Your current timer would power the motor on and off and the T106R timer would control the high and low speeds. For this reason I like the B2984T Digital Dual Speed Motor which is this same motor but with an integrated digital timer on top of the motor. The digital dual speed motor is about the same cost as purchasing this motor with the T106R timer however the digital dual speed B2984T is much easier to install and program.

Will this work for our jandy stealth 2.0 pool pump (SHPM 2.0)? The motor number model number is an AO Smith ( 177457). The only difference I saw is that on the TIME Rating ours says CONT. Will this also need a pump seal...which do you recommend for this motor?
Reply
Cassie, Yes this will work but in addition to the motor, you will either need a dual speed timer to control the speeds or you will need a dual speed switch. We also recommend replacing the shaft seal when replacing the motor. The SHPM has 2 different shaft seals depending on the age of the pump.

I have a jandy SHPM2.0-2 with 2HP 2 speed. SF of 1.1. Can I use a B2983 motor since the total HP including SF would be slightly higher than the current motor? Is there an advantage to sticking with the 2hp?Other factors that may be a consideration. Distance from pump to infloor cleaner distributor is about 60 feet (2" pipe). I currently don't have solar panels but may install shortly. that would involve a long distance and a 30 foot rise to roof. Should I consider a larger motor now?

I’ve now successfully changed the Whisperflo motor 2 a two-speed, Century/AO Smith (B2984).
Added the Pentair two-speed relay.
Wired as indicated on back of Intellitouch 8 panel door and pump connection diagrams (A=Low, L1=High, L2=Com).
No circuits show to be on, but the pump runs in low speed continuously. I know the intent of the two-speed pump is to run longer, but is it intended to be constant? I’d like to give it and my energy usage a break for at least a couple of hours a day.

Could you give us the pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation for the seal kit.

Hi John, Thanks for the photos those are helpful! You have a Jandy Stealth Pump and you will need a shaft seal when you replace your motor and this pump has used two different shaft seals and this is determined by the serial # on the side of the pump. If your serial # is before P08FF0001 then you will need this Old Style Jandy Shaft Seal and if your Serial # is after P08FF0001 you will need this New Style Jandy Shaft Seal For example if the serial # starts with an A then that is before P08FF0001 and if your serial # starts with a R than that is after P08FF0001.

Here is the ctrl board layout. Thx again David - Dallas
Thanks so much for your reply. I have a 10 year old Jandy Aqualink PDA system upgraded to a newer PDA but NOT the new board with the socketed CPU. The board schematic indicates a dip switch setting for a dual speed motor, and the Jandy parts rep said it could take a dual speed motor. 1)I am a bit confused since I don't see a service factor on my pump label. 2) Is a VS motor running at 1750 rpm more energy efficient than a dual speed motor running at the same speed? Thx, David

Hi David, I was under the impression that you need this Jandy AquaLink Dual Speed Relay for a Dual Speed Pump. Your current pump relay would power the pump on and off and the Dual Speed Relay would change from high to low speeds. You would need to make sure you had space in the AquaLink to add the extra relay. The model # of SPHM2.0 indicates you have Up Rated Motor and the 7-193994-06 motor number also confirms this. A VS motor and Dual Speed Motor running at 1750 RPM would have the same energy savings.

Also, we never use the slow option and would like to replace with a single speed if less expensive. I greatly appreciate your recommendations and direction.
Hi Kyle, the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor model k56aa15a04 is catalog number B843. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. That is the TriStar by Hayward the Pump Seal, Extra Heavy Duty PS4280 (Saltwater Pools) - PS-4280 will be needed with the Tune Up Kit Hayward TriStar/EcoStar - GOKIT81 the gokit81 is for chlorine pools you will sub out the shaft seal in the kit with the PS4280 since you have a salt system.

Hello Dan. The Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2842 or Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2858 are compatible Single-Speed replacement motors for the model 0-193990-07. The Energy Efficient B2842 is slightly more expensive than the B2858. The reduced amperage draw of the B2842 pays back that investment in approx. 3 months time based on an 8-hour/day operating cycle.
