What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

 Reply

A  Answered on 7/3/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

Michael, The main difference is that a full rate motor has a higher amp draw and higher total horsepower than an up rate motor. You will need to match the specs on the existing motor otherwise, you can damage the motor and.or impeller.

The B748 can replace the B859, but it would be working at a high amp load because it is a full-rated 2 HP. Unless you plan on replacing the impeller of your pump to increase the water output, there is no true upside.

A  Answered on 5/27/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Joseph, The quietest motor we have is the 2.7 HP Variable Speed Replacement Motor this motor is great because it is also extremely energy efficient. Normally with a variable speed motor you are looking at saving 50%-80% on your operational costs over a standard single speed motor. The variable speed motor allows you to have a full range of HP's from .75 all the way up to 2.7 HP. You have the ability to ramp up your pump to the higher HP to run things like spa jets, vacuum cleaners, water features, solar, etc.. however for the majority of the time for general pool filtration you will have the motor dialed down to a low HP and this is where you will see all of your energy savings. If you wanted to stay with a single speed then the B748 would be the correct motor for you and it should be quieter than your current motor as they have made design improvements of the years.

I need to know where I put the black and white wire. I know where the green goes. I will have to change the wiring in the motor from high to low voltage and there is a diagram. If you are correct regarding this motor only being 230 volt then there shouldn't be a diagram on the motor showing low voltage wiring.

I have a Jandy stealth 2 hp pump for pool & spa. It runs & moves water on high speed. It runs but doesn’t move any water on low speed. Any suggestions what the problem is? Thanks, Jim
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/27/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Jim G. The issue could be that the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool is too high so the pump is not able to move water at low speed.

My pool currently has a B2854 1.5 hp motor. I need to replace it and was wondering, since they appear to be the same size, if it could be replaced with a B2748 or B2843 2 hp motor. Is this possible? Is it recommended? Would there be a noticeable improvement with my pump by increasing .5 hp? Definitely need some help with this one.

A  Answered on 4/30/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Tim, You could see some improvement by bumping up your HP. Could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Please take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation.

Hi Joseph, yes the B2843 is the full rated model. Here is a guide called "How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated" that may better clarify the difference.

It sounds like you are trying to wire it for 115v. The B2748 is a 230v motor. There should be no neutral wire. One hot line would go to L1 and the other hot line would go to L2.

I see there may be different Horse power ratings... the one recommended is 2 hp what does 5 hp do ?
     Reply

    • Commented on 5/20/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi John, A 5 HP would pump more water but your pump and filter would need to be set up to accommodate 5 HP and there would be a lot of parts that would need to change out to go to 5 HP. 99.9% of the pools would be sufficient with a 2 HP motor and your pump is currently set up for a 2 HP.

No, this is a single-speed motor. You have a 2-speed motor. The 2-speed replacement motor is model B2983. B2983 is listed as a 1.5HP full rated motor but the total HP rating is 2.21. That would match what you currently have.

How long do they typically last? I think this one was installed when the pool was built in 2000. The "jet Cleaner" breakers trip often.(see photos) I'll be checking the AMP draw, today. Thank you!

A  Answered on 5/31/2024 by InyoPools Product Specialist Robert M.

The lifespan depends on the elements around the motor. If the motor is covered and well-ventilated, it can last 10+ years. If the motor is exposed to heat and water, you might get 5 years.  The breaker could be faulty but it could also be caused by a failing motor. Common issues would be worn bearings, shorted windings, or a bad capacitor.
