If I have a large pool pump will I need to have a flow meter for the heat pump?
Reply
According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Can a heat pump be installed indoors?
Reply
Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.
Reply
Can a heat pump be installed under a deck?
Reply
No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

Can I program it to run only at night?
Reply
Ken, Depending on the outdoor temp at night, it may not be possible to run the heat pump at night. The heat pump needs humidity to heat the water. Typically, you would want the heat pump to run during the day and use a solar blanket at night to help retain the heat.

What is the nominal: 1. noise level 2. current draw (amps) for both 65,000 BTU and the 95,000 BTU models. I need to check if my existing circuit can handle.
Reply
Here is the information you requested.... For the Hayward 95,000 BTU Heat Pump... Minimum Circuit Amps: 36 amps. Minimum Overload Protection: 50 Amps & Maximum Overload Protection: 60 Amps. For the 65,000 BTU unit Minimum Circuit Amps: 24 amps. Minimum Overload Protection: 40 Amps & Maximum Overload Protection: 40 Amps. I don't have the decibel ratings for either of these heat pumps but they sound like your standard home air conditioning unit.

Hello, Miguel. The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU (PART# HP21404T) is my best recommendation, click here to view. I also suggest the use of a Liquid Solar Blanket (click here to view) or a Solid Solar Blanket (click here to view) in conjunction with the heat-pump. The use of a solar blanket will prevent evaporation to help reduce heat loss.

Does the warranty cover a self install or does it need to be installed by a licensed dealer/electricial? Thanks for your help.
Reply
Hi Kent, This unit has to be installed by a licensed and insured company authorized by Hayward.

Will the warranty be in place if I buy the heat pump, (95000 BTU) and have it installed by a certified/licensed Electrician and plumber? The pool companies around here will not install unless I buy from them and jack the price up for installation and purchase.

Brian- The warranty will still be valid as long as a licensed and insured installer does the install on this unit.

What gauge wiring is required for this heat pump .......95000 btu?...and the breaker?

Hi Bruce, This unit requires a 50 amp 230 volt breaker. The gauge wire would be determined by the run from the breaker to the unit. The licenses electrician will have to make that calculation.

I currently have a Hayward 65000 BTU heat pump heating my above ground 24' round pool (13000 gallons). The 65000 is a little slow heating the pool (I live in Pennsylvania). I would like to heat it faster. I need to replace it because it is damaged. Is the Hayward 125000 to big for this pool or should I go with the 95000
Reply
The 95,000 BTU Hayward Heat Pro will definitely heat your pool faster than the current heater you have. The larger BTU units (110,000 HP21104T or 125,000 HP21254T) will heat the pool faster depending on their sizes, which means less run time and energy consumption the higher up you go. Any of these units will work for your pool.

Has there been any known issues with connecting it to a GFCI breaker?

For the installation of this heat pump, you will need a dedicated 50 amp breaker. I have no information at my disposal to adequately answer your question. You will need to contact directly at 1-908-355-7995 with any modifications to the standard wiring procedure.

Good afternoon Mike,I would recommend the AquaCal Ice Breaker/Heat Pump, part number SQ120R. I use to live in Coachella Valley, in the desert, and had that unit. With the extremely hot summers the ice breaker was amazing and in the somewhat cool winters the heat pump was great. I paired that with a cover to trap the heat so I wouldn't have to run the heat pump as much. As far as the liquid cover, the advantages of it is that you don't have to take off the cover every time you want to use the pool and it's a cover without you actually seeing the cover so it looks good. The disadvantages are that you have to add the solution weekly and I haven't found that it works as well as the actual cover. I hope this answers your questions, but if you have any further questions don't hesitate to email me back.

That unit would work for your set up. I don't know if Mesa is in the desert, but if it is I'd recommend looking into a heat pump that has an ice breaker as well. I use to live in Coachella Valley in southern California where it's 120 degrees everyday in the summer. Before I got my ice breaker I'd get in the pool and it would feel like jumping into a hot bath. The climate you live in I really would not recommend a heat pump less than the 125k btu model. Even then, I would recommend a heater over a heat pump for the climate you live in. Also, with your pool being about 16k-17k gallons I would go with at least the 300k either natural gas or propane heater.

The greenhouse effect would keep the air inside probably above 45-50 about 11 months out of the year probably at least. Would there be enough air flow within that space to efficiently operate the unit. Would it help to dehumidify the air.

If you wanted it indoors it will not be effective. If you are at 45-50 degrees you will be better off with a propane or natural gas heater.

Hi, Marc. Unfortunately, without know the pump model and the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool, we're unable to tell you what rpm to operate the pump at. You will have to so through a process of elimination. You can use a 95K BTU or higher to effectively heat your pool.

I ran a 10 gauge wire just before my patio was built to make things easier to add a heater in the future. Will a 10 gauge wire be sufficient to run this pump? I’m worried I did the work for nothing. Please tell me I didn’t :(

Hi, K.F. A 10 gauge wire can be used with a 40 amp breaker with a run up to 95 feet from the breaker.

This unit will work with this size of pool during the swimming season as long as the air is warm enough to pull heat out of it. This unit requires a 240v connection

How do I connect the Heat Pro To a Pentair EasyTouch 8 System
Reply
To connect the electronic board in order to control it remotely, use the P_S terminals on the right side of the board. Next, access the P_S menu and select the desired mode. In internal mode, POOL or SPA mode can be adjusted by using this menu. In external mode, a normally open contact puts the board in POOL mode and a closed contact puts the board in SPA mode. Therefore, a board set to OFF in POOL mode and to 80 degrees in SPA mode can be controlled with an external switch to heat up to 80 degrees.

What size heat pump do you recomend for a 16 x 28 x 5 inground pool in North Florida?

Hi, Donald. If you want a desired temperature if 80 or higher a 110,000 BTU or higher unit will be sufficient.

I looked through some replies regarding breaker size for the 95,000 BTU unit and more than once the answer was a dedicated 60 amp breaker. The manufacturers specs recommend a 40 amp breaker. Are you finding that the 40 amp breaker trips too often unnecessarily?
Reply
Hi, Doug. The max breaker size is 60, you can use a 50 amp breaker if you want. I do not have any findings that the 40 amp breaker trips too often unnecessarily.

I need to replace an existing Hayward heat pump (15 years old) and wanted to use this Hayward heat pump. Are the input and outflow pipes standard in their spread at the base of the unit? In other words, if same, it would be an easy install.
Hi, Birkes. The port locations are a standard distance apart amongst the Hayward units.

Are there any heat pumps out there that require a 30 amp breaker.

David, Unfortunately, we don't have any at this time.

OK, do you plan on getting any this season? Can you tell me who makes them? Hayward, etc?

Hi David, The smallest breaker size heat pump we were able to find is this 48,000 BTU Raypak Heat Pump which has a reccomended breaker size of 35 Amps.

I just purchased a HP 21004 heat pump. all in ground pipimg is 11/2 " where would recommend as to where the reduce should be installed. At Heat pump in/out or at filter outlet?

Hello Walt, either option would be fine. Most installers would reduce after the filter then after the heat pump.

Which of the Hayward’s heat pumps would be recommended for 14,000 gallons inground pool in Sarasota, FL? We would love to extend our swimming season so the pool could be used year round with water temperature of at least 84F.
Reply
Hi Jack, we recommend a heater that will give you at least a 1 degree rise in temperature per hour so your pump and heater are not running constantly (and driving up your utility bills). Our guide on How to Select an Inground Pool Heater says that an easy estimation of what you need is the square footage of the surface area of your pool. The heater on this webpage would give you about .9 degree rise per hour if your pool has 300 square feet of surface area, which might be a little too small. We recommend adding a solar blanket to it when you are not using it (especially at night) to keep the heat loss to a minimum. Let us know the size of your pool and we would be happy to recommend something that will keep you swimming well into the Florida winters.
