When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
Reply
On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

We have a model S240 Hayward sand filter purchased in 1988. It has a crack in the bottom shell and need to know if this model S244S is an adequate replacement? For example design flow rate is 63 gpm, and maximum working pressure is 50 psi - does this match the current model's specifications? Thank you for your assistance.

Yes we would suggest the S244S as the adequate replacement as it has a GPM rating of 62 and the same PSI rating. You will need some slight re plumbing as the plumbing ports and location of valve are in a different position then the S240.

I have a in ground pool with a 24" Hayward sand filter with 1 1/5 motor. The filter is 20 years old. My pool holds 25,000 gallons. Should I go to a 30" sand filter?

Hello Charles - The 24" filter is sufficient for your pool size. However, the 30" filter would not have to be cleaned as often.

Hi Hank, The Northstar Pump is a pretty powerful pump so I would suggest the larger S270T2 Hayward Sand Filter.

Hello, depending on where you are seeing your leaks, I would replace numbers 1-4 after clicking Hayward Pro Series - Side Mount Sand Filter Parts. That should replace your whole top lid with oring, unless you would like to get the clamp too.

My S244S tank spews water out the tank top. My repairman tells me that this is not due to a tank top not fitting correctly but to a warped tank itself.
The tank is about 5 or 6 years old.
Does this sound accurate and do I need a new tank or can this be repaired and the expense spared.
Reply
Hello John- That could absolutely be the issue, although I have never personally seen one warped that bad, but it is possible. The unfortunate thing is there would be no way to repair it, and that tank is obsolete so you would have to purchase and entire new S244s.

Sand Filter with Side Mount Valve 24 Inch Tank - S244v-can this replace S 200
Reply
Yes this is a suitable replacement for the S200S however the plumbing ports are in different locations so you will have a little re-plumbing. This S244S filter is currently out of stock so you might want to consider something like this Hayward S310S Sand Filter
