What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

will3 hp sq1302 a. o smith motor fit pentair challenger pump?
Reply
Technically speaking yes this motor would fit a Challenger pump but whether it is actually compatible with your current Challenger pump parts would depend on the impeller and diffuser model currently used.

I have a Challenger Pentair 2-1/2 HP Pump, Model # CHII-N1-2 1/2 AE. I need to replace the motor, but it doesn't have a model #, the Part # is 0-168786-07. The problem is, none of the motors on this web site match the pump model #. Do you think this motor will work on my pump, also would it be better to pay the extra $40 and get the energy efficient model. Thx for your help.

Give correct impeller and diffuser part numbers for B2840 motor

The part information would be identified by the make and model of your PUMP, the front half that the motor attaches to. If you can provide me that information, I will be better able to answer your question.

Whisperflo-30: my current motor is a B855 (2 HP) but the pump is a 2.5 HP and this seems like it is the right one.
I had a home warranty when they replaced the last one.

Hello David, yes the A.O. Smith 2.5 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor (B840, B2840) is the correct replacement motor for the WF-30 Whisperflo Pump. I would also recommend replacing your seals with the Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32. The tune up kit contains all o-rings and the shaft seal for your pump.

Hi there, I have a Jandy Stealth SHPM2.5-2 2 speed pump & motor. I just wanted to check and see if this is the correct replacement motor and inquire which is the correct tune up kit. The pump tries to turn on (makes the initial noise) and shuts off almost immediately, breaker does not trip. Thanks!
Reply
Hello Albert- The A.O. Smith 2.5 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor (B840, B2840) B840 is the correct replacement motor. There is not tune up kit for this pump, but to determine the correct shaft seal it would be determined by the serial number on your pump. The Shaft Seal OEM (R0445500) is used on Stealth Pumps with Serial #'s of P08FF0001 and earlier. Models with serial numbers later than that would use Shaft Seal (R0479400) OEM.

I purchased the motor March 2015. This morning the motor quitted and did not start after turning the switch. The capacitor appears to work fine. Is there anything I should do? What is the warranty coverage for the unit? Thanks!
Reply
All motors we sell are warranted for one year. You can try removing the motor from the housing to see if debris is jamming the impeller. You can also inspect between the motor and the motor mounting plate for corrosion on the face (metallic front) of the motor. This would indicate the pump/shaft seal failed. This water damage (if present) would have damaged the bearing in the motor. Replacing the bearings would be another option to repair the motor. Here are a couple of links that may help you with this problem: How To Determine Why a Motor Won't Start or Shuts Off and How To Replace AO Smith Motor Parts - Overview.

Hi, Rick. This Century B840 motor can be used as a replacement. The Stainless steel parts are for the pump assembly, not the motor.

Hi,
I have a Jandy Stealth Pump SHPM2.0, SN: M07FF2120. I'd like to upgrade it to a 2.5HP (uprated). I believe I can use the following:
B840 motor, R0807200 impeller. Is this correct? If so, what shaft seal should be used?
Also, I believe I can re-use the same diffuser, correct?
Reply
Hi. That is correct, this B2840 motor, and Impeller Kit - R0807200 is correct. I would recommend replacing the Diffuser Kit - R0445400 since you are replacing the Impeller along with the Pump Shaft Seal - R0479400. You should only make this upgrade once you've confirmed that your system can handle the increased water flow.

Hello, you can actually use either the B2748 or the B2840 as they both have the same total horsepower. It can be confusing based on the way the manufacturer labels these. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated" that better explains.

Both the B2840 and the B2843 have the same total horsepower however the B2843 uses slightly less amperage making it a more energy-efficient motor.

Hello Larry. The Magnetek Century 2.5 HP Up Rate Motor is a compatible replacement for the Pentair Pool Products Motor model 186237. It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced at the same time. These parts are specific to the manufacturer/model of the pump and not the motor. Please provide this information and a recommendation can be made. If this information is no longer available or visible on the pump, please provide several photos of the pump inclusive of the intake and discharge plumbing which will assist in identification.

The motor will be installed without shelter from rain. Is this motor weather resistant?
Reply
Hello Tarik. The Magnetek Century 2.5 HP Up Rate Motor model B2840 is weather resistant. There are several steps that can be taken to maximize the life span of the pool pump motor. Keep debris away from the motor's cooling ports to prevent overheating, do not expose the motor to landscape irrigation water, maintain a clean pool filter, make sure the installation site has proper water drainage - water drains away from equipment and no standing water is present around the motor area. The use of a Protective Motor Cover can be beneficial. Protective Pool Motor Cover - R221016

I have pump CAT B2854 with part number 0-F56AA40A01-24, would this model (B2840, 2.5HP) fit? if so, what's the advantage of running with HP 2.5 vs the old HP 1.5 when the RPm is the ame at 3450.
Thanks in advance
Hello Joe, so the B2854 is the correct replacement motor. If you were to try a larger horsepower motor of that magnitude it could cause issues in your system due to the increase of suction and pressure. I advise to go with the original HP for a single speed replacement. We also recommend replacing the seals and gaskets when replacing a pool pump motor. Here is our "Finding the Tune-Up Kit for Your Pool Pump' guide that should assist.
