What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

I am replacing a A.O. Smith B848 1 HP motor which drives a Jandy SHPF10 pump, 1 HP. What Tune Up Kit would I need when I replace the motor?
Reply
I am sorry, there is not a single Tune Up Kit. You would definitly need a shaft seal ( either #5 ) , the lid seal ( part #12) ,backplate o-ring ( part #13 ) and diffuser ( part #15 ) . There are kits for backplate kits or impeller kits . Please see the parts diagram.

I have an old Magnetek Centurion motor. Everything appears to match up on the label with the motor on your site. Are any additional parts required to replace just the motor?

Hi Paul you would require a seal kit we would need to know which pump you have to determine your seal kit. The most popular pump that this motor is used on is the Pentair Whisperflo if you have this pump then you would require the Pentair Whisperflo Tune Up Kit

My power to the pump is 230 volts. I am replacing with the identical pump. The pump can run in other 115 or 230. Is there anything I need to do to the pump for it to be set to run on 230? I ran my black wire to L1 and the White to l2. Of course grounded (I read that if 220 there is a black and red wire, but mine are black and white, both are hot, and it comes off a double circuit)
But does something in the pump need to be changed based on whether I'm feeding with 115 or 230?
Reply
Hi, Paul. As long as you're running this motor on 230 volts you do not have to do anything else because the motor comes from the factory set to be wired for 230 volts.

Can you use a Century B2848 1.0 hp/1.65SF motor to replace a Century 0.75hp/1.67SF motor on a Pentair Challenger pump? Are motor dimensions approximately the same? Is this a compatible switch to get more flow without overhauling the system, merely swapping out motors? Any other suggestions?

If you up the horsepower on your motor you will also need to upgrade your impeller as well otherwise you will get the bigger motor and it will have the same flow rate as the old motor because you did not upgrade the impeller.

I have a dead pool motor that I am replacing. The old one is refurbished and the only identifier on the old sticker is: "Magnetek, Amps 16/8, FR 56Y, HP 1.0, Volts 115/230, RPM 3450" and no model number. Is the B848 the proper replacement? And, what type of seal kit do you recommend? Thank you!

If you have a pump model from the pump housing or a part number from the impeller I would be able to be accurate with my answer.

What is difference between the models 848 and 2848. I cross reference my pump Century Centurian 177475 and it came back on A.O. Smith site as 848. I see you have this listed with both numbers. Just curious what the 2848 was for if its a 848. Thx. Jody

Hi. There is no difference between the B848 and B2848 motor other than how the part number is written.

My motor went out today, but I was thinking it may be better to increase its hp up to 1.5 or 2 hp. Is it better to increase the hp now and what would I replace it with so that I don't have to replace everything; just the bare minimum to give it that little extra umph...

Hi, Mark. Increasing the horsepower of the pump is not always that simple if your goal is to increase the water flow. You would first have to find out if your system can handle the additional water flow then replace the impeller, the seals and or the diffuser if needed.

Hi Russell. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest installing a new Seal Kit which includes the important motor shaft seal, but they are specific to your pump and not the motor. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? Please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump as well as any labels on it. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos or email them to upload@inyopools.com. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for you.
