Since these specs say 26" not 36", how is this a replacement for the S7M400? I believe your answer to the question above is mistaken.

The lid part number (24851-9000) is compatible with all Sta-Rite S7 models. if your model is the S7m400 or the S7M120 this lid will work.

I have the System:3 S7M400 as well with a broken upper tank. On the back the filter states that the w: 36 and length is 36. Will this one fit my filter since the details state 26"? I see ppl have asked these questions, but don't get the feeling that the answer is correct.

Attached please find an exploded parts diagram that itemizes all available parts for the Sta-Rite System3 Modular Media Filter. Please note item Key 24. Attached please find an overview of the System3 Filter Series from the Pentair Website. System:3® Modular Media Filters —SM Series Please note the Dimension portion which identifies Width D as 36" - the width needed to take off the clamps. Width A as 28 1/2" - the filter width inclusive of the clamps attached. The actual diameter of the lid is not identified but confidence is high that it is 26".
