What does this do?

The Sta-Rite Float Valve Assembly (08650-0079) protects the pump from loss of prime if the skimmer clogs or flow through skimmer is restricted. The trimmer valve plate on the bottom of the float valve balances the flow between skimmer and main drains.

The number shown on our valve float is S 8650-37. Will your 08650-0079 be the replacement I need?

Yes, this is the replacement for the s8650-37 basket. Ensure to verify the dimensions on the basket to be absolutely certain- 8.25" X 5.15"

I'm sure it should be obvious to me, but where does the rubber o-ring go? I don't have one currently in my set-up.

Hi, The o-ring will go into the grove in the bottom of the skimmer, as shown in the Sta-Rite / Swimquip U-3 Part Diagram.

How does this float valve get mounted at the bottom of the skimme? Is there still room for the basket?
 Reply

A  Answered on 9/29/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Robert, The Float Assy Valve (08650-0079) is installed with the float facing up. There will be room for the basket with the float assy installed.

This float valve seats loosely at the bottom of my skimmer and this is a problem when the pool pump shuts off. Due to the inertia of the flowing water, for a second or 2 after the pump shuts off water continues to flow from the pipe from the main drain and forces the float valve off the bottom of the skimmer. Invariably it gets cocked at an angle when it settles back down and no longer functions correctly when the pool pump turns back on. Can you please provide me with a fix for this problem?

Hi. Check to see if the Float Valve O-ring - U9-169 is in place. If it's missing replacing it will resolve the issue.

The o-ring is in place and provides a water seal due to suction when the pump is running. When not running the o-ring provides no capability to hold the float valve in place and it easily lifts off. When the pump stops running the float valve lifts off and invariably gets cocked at an angle. This happens mostly when the pool water level is low which is exactly when I need the float valve the most to protect the pump. Is a weight or some other method available to hold the float valve in place?

Hi. Here are my other recommendations. (1) Make sure you have the correct skimmer basket. (2) Make sure that you have the correct Float Valve for your skimmer model. If 1 and 2 are correct, I would recommend replacing the float valve.

My float valve measures 6 inches across. Will this replacement part fit into the space at the bottom of the skimmer? The specifications on the replacement says 6.25 inches and there doesn't appear to have any room for more than 6 inches on the bottom .

What is the model of your skimmer? Do you have photographs of the existing float valve?

The float valve looks identical to the picture shown for 8650-0079. The numbers on the float valve are 8650-37 or 39. According to the other questions and answers, 0079 replaces 0037 or 0039 I think the skimmer is pentair model u-3, 8650-8652-8653-8655. That is all the info I can get from the skimmer housing.

The 51-102-1228 does measure 6-1/4" across the bottom, used in StaRite SwimQuip (old) U-3 skimmers & also in the Hayward SP1070, 1071, in ground skimmers. We would need to try to I.D. the original mfg of your skimmer.

Hi Mary, we did re-measure this part and it does indeed measure 6.25" across the bottom.
