What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I currently have the Hayward Tri-Star SP3205Z1BE pump which needs to be replaced. I have read that the replacing it with a variable speed pump will be much more efficient.
1.) If I replace the current pump with a variable speed pump, what pump would you recommend?
2.) Will it fit the current face plate attachment or would I need to reconfigure part or all of my system?
Thank you,
Tim

Hi Tim, Hayward now makes the Tristar Variable Speed Pool Pump which would be a drop in replacement for you current Hayward Tristar Pump making this a pretty easy DIY job. If you happen to have the Hayward ProLogic indoor control system then you would use the Hayward Tristar Variable Speed Pool Pump for Prologic Indoor Control Systems.

What is the SF of this motor (part no. 5112-256) and the amps? Also how is it differant from the motor part no. B842 Thanks
Reply
Hi Richard, this Hayward Tristar replacement motor has a service factor (SF) of 1.60 for a True HP of 2.4 HP. The amp draw @ 115V is 20, @ 208V is 12 and @ 230V is 10. The B842 (B2842) can only be wired at 208V or 230V and not 115V and has a service factor of 1.47 for a True HP of 2.2 HP. If your current motor has a true HP of 2.4 and you replace with a motor which has a true HP of 2.2 then you run the risk that the smaller motor will be worked to hard and fail prematurely.

Do I need 1-1/2 hp pump on hot tub?
Reply
This will depend on whether your current pump originally used this same model motor. If so then yes unless you decide to also replace the impeller and potentially the diffuser to match the horse power you decide to use.

My hot tub pump (Hayward SP3X3215Z1BE) makes a very loud noise when running. Sounds like a bearing. Do I need to replace the whole motor, or is there something else that could be causing the noise. Is there a rebuild kit available?
Help.

Hi, We do not have a rebuilt kit for the 1-1/2hp Full Tristar 115/208-230v Motor, you can replace the bearings but you will have to the motor apart and provide us with the p/n off of the bearings. We have How To Replace the Bearings in a Pool Pump Motor - Part I & How To Replace the Bearings in a Pool Pump Motor - Part II to show you have to replace the bearings.

I have a Hayward TriStar 1-1/2 HP Part # SP32152EE The motor runs fine on both speeds, but will not start on high speed unless I first start it on low speed and switch it to high speed after it is running. Is this a capacitor problem and is it covered under warranty? Please advise. Thank you.
Reply
Hi, Ray. The Capacitor is the problem, it's probably not holding a charge. The complete pump or motor comes with a 1 year warranty which will be covered under warranty.

I have this exact motor but it suddenly stopped working. It started humming and impeller spins very slowly. I tested both capacitors and they are working. I also reset motor. But there is still a large hum. I am also looking for a better motor I can replace this with that is energy efficient.

Hi, Rick. Since both of the capacitors tested good, then the issue is internal. There is not a substitute energy efficient replacement for this Tristar motor.

Is this motor quiet?

Good afternoon, single speed motors would all have a Decibel rating between 65-67 dBs. Variable speed units would have a lower rating when you program them to run at the lower RPM's. Give us a call and we can discuss your options

I have this (SP3215Z1BE), 1 1/2 HP motor to run the water features on our pool (7 scuppers). Not getting the desired flow, would like to increase the water volume/flow about 25%. What HP rating/model would you recommend.
Thanks, Neil

Do I need a seal or kit to CD replace
Reply
Hi Alfred, if you have the Hayward Ecostar pool pump then the seal kit is the GOKIT81. If you do not have that pool pump series then for us to suggest the proper seal kit could you send a photo of a wide shot of your complete pool pump to show the pipes going in and out of the pump? To supply this photo simply click the reply link below and upload your photo. Once we get this photo we can make the proper recommendation for the seal kit.

Is this the correct replacement for this? Do I need new seal kit?
Hi Alfred, yes this is the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. If you for sure have the Hayward Tristar pool pump series then the seal kit is the GOKIT81.To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Hi - I have the Hayword sp3215z1ber pump on my pool. We recently moved into the house and our first electric bill was quite high. do you happen to know if this pump is energy efficient? If not, can i just replace the motor with a more efficient one or should I replace the whole unit? Also, I assume variable speed pumps will give me better energy usage right? Thanks for any info you can share.

Hi Rich, yes, a pool pump can account for 25% of your household electric bill, and with Title 20 being enforced in California, energy-efficient variable-speed pumps and motors are becoming mandatory. There is no need to replace everything - just replace the motor. This V-Green 2.7 HP Variable Speed Motor - ECM27SQU will be a perfect replacement for your old motor and, when it is set up properly, it can pay for itself with the energy savings you will get.
