how to find Replacement LED Pool Light Bulbs

Poolside Chat Episode #26: Replacement LED Pool Light Bulbs

This is Poolside Chat where every week we answer your questions on how to fix and maintain your swimming pool. Poolside Chat is presented by INYOPools.com, helping pool owners find the right parts since 2001. In today’s episode of Poolside Chat, Rob and Matt tackle another common swimming pool question:
  • Can I install an LED replacement pool light bulb in my light or must I replace the whole fixture, cord and all?

Now here’s your hosts – Matt and Rob.

“We have a Pentair pool light that was installed in 2007 in our 1964 pool. Currently, we have drained it while we do some cosmetic changes to it. Do I need to replace the whole pool light in order to go with an LED bulb or can I just switch up the bulb itself?

-Rachel, from Georgia

If you have the Pentair Amerlite, which takes a regular incandescent light bulb like this, you can just replace the bulb witha LED bulb. It’s either 120 or 12 volt, and you

can tell this by either looking at the bulb or looking at the fixture should tell you, if not, there might be a transformer by your junction box, and if that’s the case and you have 12 volt, it’s that simple, if you just replace the bulb, you also want to replace the light gasket to protect that bulb. But if you don’t have a bulb like this, what should they do?

Well, if you have a Pentair AmeriQuartz or a SAM-Lite, they have two different style of bulbs, which are not compatible with the LED screwing types, so you will have to go with a whole LED fixture replacement. Now, we would suggest the Pentair IntelliBrite which is—I think it’s been on the market, one of the longest out there for the LED fixture, it’s got a great set of light shows, very good solid colors.

If you want to dance.

It even makes Rob dance, and that is a really hard thing to do, usually it takes the whisperers or something like that. The LED lights fixtures are very good, and they just bolt right into the side of your pool, you don’t have to do any other retrofitting. Well, I think that just about covers it Rachel. Thank you for sending in your question. And we will be forwarding you your 10 dollar reward code for giving us some work.

  1. Hi Matt,

I need to replace in ground pool shell surface soon. Are fiberglass surfaces now more long lasting and trouble free today than plaster? If so will fiberglass reduce algae blooms? I
We get green, brown, clear and black algae on our 1966 vintage rough plaster that is deteriorating regularly.
What do you think? Any reliable competent contractors in Ventura CA area to consider?
    Thanks for your thoughts
    James
