Should I run my heat pump during the day or at night?

PSC Ep. 83: Should I run my heat pump during the day or at night?

In today’s episode of Poolside Chat, Rob and Matt tackle another common swimming pool question:

Should I run my heat pump during the day or at night?

‘Better’ is subjective because if you’re talking about your wallet, it’s better to run the heat pump during the day because the heat pump can run more efficiently. This is because the heat pump converts the warmer ambient air and transfers that to your pool. As far as energy efficiency goes, you’d want to run it during the day.

Now, if you’re looking to swim in the morning, and you want it at 85 degrees in the morning, you’re probably going to have to run it at night.

Another thing you could do is stagger the run times during the day. If you have a timer or automated control system, you could run the pump four hours on, four hours off, and you could do that throughout the day and night. That should maintain 85 degrees.

Or, let’s say, you just want to run the pump during the day, you could get a solar cover. Just the traditional kind of bubble solar cover. If you’re not interested in lugging that off the pool every time you want to use it, you can get a liquid solar blanket. A little solar balls or solar fish. If you don’t want to do that, then maybe you don’t want a pool. Now, it still should save you money on your heat pump, electricity bills, kind of works every which way. I think we both answered that correctly for once.

  1. I recently had a conversation with my sister on hybrid pool heating and decided to look it up to learn more about it. Thankfully, I found your great article, which is just jam-packed with information. I really liked how you explained it’s better to run the heat pump during the day because the heat pump can run more efficiently. A great point indeed, where many of those interested in pool heating can agree with. Thanks for this! https://ecofriendlypoolsandspas.com/heaters

  2. The interesting automation question would be to have the automation system react to the air temperature and opportunistically turn on the heat pump when it would be most efficient. Perhaps overshoot the target temp to move the heat energy into the water.

To take that even further, an Internet connected automation system that has access to the weather forecast could be even smarter and wait for forthcoming expected warm temperature.

    1. Our electricity rates in our area are normally about 30%-35% higher during the day (@ 7am – 7pm ), than at night. Overall electricity usage is much, much higher during the daytime hours when business, commercial, and residential electrical demand is highest; therefore electric companies reap higher profits. We heat the pool in the overnight hours – it’s less expensive. We have confirmed with our local utility company, and they told us this is true. Your thoughts ? In your part of the country ?
