Is the UST1202 the replacement motor for my 2HP Hayward Super II pump? My motor does not have that external bump. Does that make a difference?
Reply
Hello Doyle - The UST1202 is the correct motor if the service factor (SF) of your current motor is 1.1. This rating can be found on the motor label. The external bump is a run capacitor. All of the new 2HP motors have this capacitor.

Hello: I currently have a Hayward Super II pump, with a 1 1/2 HP motor, I would like to upgrade to a 2HP motor. The pump model is SP3010X15AZ.
Will this 2HP motor work properly?
Thank you
Reply
Hi Frank, This would be the correct motor if you would like to upgrade to 2 HP but you will also need to upgrade to a 2 HP Hayward Super II Impeller as well as upgrading to a 2 HP Hayward Super II Diffuser.

The repair/ replacement videos on the Inyo site were valuable and gave my husband the confidence that he could replace the motor- he watched these videos numerous times and now our pump is running smoothly

1. turned off power to pump 2. unbolted and removed pump from filter pot 3. de-energized capaciter by shorting it out 4. unwired pumped 5. removed mounting brackets and water mover parts from old pump needed for new pump 6. cleaned mounting brackets and water mover of debris 7. added mounting brackets and water mover to new pump 8. added new wire connecters due to corrosion 9. wired pump 10. added petroleum sealant to filter pot seal 11. mounted new pump to filter pot 12. re-energized pump 14. primed filter pot with garden hose 15. turned on pump; The local pool supply was wanting to charge me $900 dollars to change out pump. It cost me around $300 for the new pump and $10 for the sealant and wire connectors. I watched an instructional video on how to change out pump. It was the best $600 I did not spend. Watch video first to make sure you have everything you need before you start. Only small issue I had was I had to get my cordless impact out to remove mounting bracket from old pump, bolts were on there really tight and I did not want to risk snapping a bolt head off using a socket.

Having fifty years of pump and motor experience did not help me with this repair. However, my good friend did. I spend winters in Naples, FL. Guess when the pump started to fail. In June 2020. I knew what the problem was but was not there to fix it. With a new motor and seal (tune up) kit from INYO, I was able to walk my friend through the repair. He took delivery of the parts. I had him watch a video and talked to him on a video chat. What made the whole thing possible is that the parts were correct. No screw up and pump is running fine. The only snag was that the impeller was really stuck hard on the shaft so I had my buddy buy a strap wrench, which he used and promptly returned to the store (he's frugal).

Nothing terribly complicated as I replaced the entire unit. Killed power, disconnected old and then reattached new.
Easy-peasy but saved myself literally hundreds of dollars buying from Inyo and doing myself versus leaving to my pool company.

This motor is a perfect replacement for my pump that was equipped w/ dual-speed unit. Unless you need it, I would avoid the more expensive motors.
After removing power, then wiring to old pump, 4 bolts will remove the motor from the pump. Make sure everything comes out with the motor. On my old motor, inserting a Phillips into the impeller and turning the motor shaft makes easy removal of the impeller. Make sure you order a new seal and I would recommend a new gasket for the diffuser.
The pump plate will bolt to the front of the motor, then the seal is installed and finally the impeller. I had a touch of trouble holding the motor shaft to tighten the impeller. Reassemble with the diffuser mounted to the front of the motor and slide the assembly in place. There is a provided rubber cushion to take up the space at the rear of the motor as it is slightly smaller than the original.
Bolt it all together, then wire it. On a 220/230 connection, you have three leads normally. 2 hot leads and a ground, the hots go to L1 and L2, the ground connects to the ground on the motor frame. Once in place, you will also need to bond the outside motor ground to earth.
You should have an earth ground on the previous pump that you removed. If you do not have an earth ground, I highly suggest that you add one. A 6 foot metal shaft can be driven into the earth and then the motor ground can be connected. If something ever happens to short out the motor, you do not want to electrify the pool water and the earth ground will provide a path for the electrical energy.

I have not installed the motor yet but if it is the wrong one, that's on me. I orcered a motor on 8-31-20 from Marathon Motors. I was concerned because there was no way for me to check status. I emailed them and asked when it would ship. Tney said it looked like it wouldnt ship until 9-6-20. I found that odd since it was a Sunday but accepted that. With the 10th being Labor Day, I was hopeful for an update, butheard nothing. My acct. showed the invoice and had no updates. I'm without a pool motor for over a week now and lack of communication location was ticking me off. I go online to see if anyone else has this and Inyo pops up. I use their how to videos often and figured I've had enoigh and cancelled my order with Marathon. This was on 9-8-2020 I ordered the motor from Inyo after I received confirmation of my cancelled order with Marathon. My motor came in on 9-9-2020. I can't believe it got here the next day! I'm in Florida Inyo is not but apparently they have a vendor or partner in Clearwater. Thank you Inyo, you are my goto moving forward for my pool. FYI, Marathon charged shipping of $28.00 but no tax. Inyo did not charge shipping but there was tax. I ended up paying Inyo $2.30 more because of tax but that's just fine with me!

My review is not necessarily about the pump because my first pump died after 2 months (commutator started falling apart internally), but more about INYO Pools.com. First off, they have a video and all the info you need to submit a warranty claim on these pumps and they deal with the manufacturer to handle your claim for you which is nice. When I submitted my claim, they were quick to handle and send me the response from the manufacturer which sounds great until I read the comment which said the manufacturer denied the claim. Without going into detail, I was obviously upset and let INYO know my disappointment. Assuming they were like many online stores, I assumed I was better off talking to the wall. To my amazement, I received an email a couple days later saying a replacement pump was being shipped to me FOC. INYO went to bat with the manufacturer on my behalf! It's nice to know INYO is the type of business that does it's best to provide great customer service - thank you!

Pros: Easy to install, quiet, cost efficient
Cons: Heavy
Not the most mechanically inclined guy here. Good enough to get by. I noticed my filter motor was considerably louder this spring after 7 years of heavy use. I talked to my pool guy who told me it would cost around $500 to replace the pump including labor. I looked at it and decided I would try to tackle it myself. I found the exact match pump on Inyo and it was in my hands within 3 days. I followed the step by step instructions on the online video and the pump has been humming smoothly since its successful installation last week. I even handled the electrical part myself(which is always my biggest concern). I rule!

I had a Hayward 2 hp, the Gold colored one. It basically had a bad bearing, after 6 years and saltwater pool, In any case I ran it until the shaft snapped in two. Replaced it with this one and what a difference in noise and power that we never saw with the original Hayward. Tip - Replace your impeller when changing the motor, whether you need to or not.

(5 out of 5 stars) AO Smith 2hp motor replacement
Reviewed By: BobH. from Tampa, FL ()
Very straight forward replacement process except for 2 points; power wiring sequence was different from old motor. So when they tell you to note the placement of the L1, L2 & ground wires when you are removing the old motor, it is NOT the same as the new motor. L1 & L2 are reversed. Second, the "top" of the new motor is not indicated or obvious and again is different than the old motor. The hump is (on) the top of the new motor, (as seen in the above picture) whereas it is/was off 80 deg. clockwise (from the top) of the old motor as you faced it from the front/shaft end.

Reviewed By: Larry from Egg Harbor Twp, NJ ()
Pros: Exact fit and HP as old pump.
Cons: Slightly different electric contacts needed. Printed instructions were not included with the pump.
The pump was an exact match for the Hayward pump that I needed to replace. The video that was available on the INYOpools site was clear and comprehensive. After reviewing it at least 4 times, I had no problem switching the motors. The A.O. Smith pump is working exactly as the old Hayward did and at exactly the same PSI. The only question now remaining is the longevity of the new pump. Only time will answer this.
