How does the dual speed feature of this pump work?

Some dual speed pumps have a toggle switch in the back of the motor to change speeds manually, but many do not. Generally you would need to tie this dual speed pump into one of our dual speed pump timers/controllers. One of the more popular models is the Digital PE153 series. This timer has 3 functions: one to turn the pump on and off, a second auxiliary to switch from high speed to low speed, and then a third for any other piece of pool equipment. You may view these controllers through the following link: Intermatic Timers

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Does the pump come with union fittings? If not, what are the parts I need?
 Reply

A  Answered on 11/4/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Andy O.

The Whisperflo Dual speed Fullrated 1HP pump (part number 011486) does not come with union fitttings. The part you would need part number 11201-0154. Thses unions are sold individually so you would need 2; one for the suction side and one for the discharge.

Pump no longer will operate in LOW speed. Works fine in HIGH speed. Any ideas on troubleshooting?

Hi, Sean. I would recommend testing the Run Capacitor and or Pool Windings. Instructions are available in our How to Test a Pool Pump Capacitor Blog and How To Test a Pool Pump Motor Winding Resistance guide.

Old pump was completely shot.

1. Mark the position of your old pump on the ground

2. Disconnect the electrical from the old pump.

3. Cut the plumbing to the old pump. Cut back far enough to accommodate a coupling.

Note: if you plumbing was installed with unions simply disconnect them. It is a good idea to replace the unions as they are probably as old as the pump. You also have the option to plumb it with unions to make replacement in the future easier.

4. Prep the new pump. You will want to use Schedule 80 nipples TOEs rather than PVC male adapters. Teflon tape and pipe thread compound on the threads. Hand tighten the nipples into the pump. Then give a full turn of the nipple using a strap wrench. Not to tight!

5. Prep and clean your existing plumbing.
6. Position the new pump using the marks you left on the pad. Measure for the length of pipe you will need to cut
Note: measure and glue the bottom pipe first. As the top will be easier to connect than a straight shot.

7. Measure and connect the top pipe.

Note: You will want to use glue and primer I recommend using clear versions of both as it will hide a lot of the runs and drips.

8. Let dry and set for at least three hours. While you are waiting connect the electrical.

9. Run and check for leaks.
