Hi Kent, fortunately no there is no difference. The "X" is just an alternate part number as many pool products have those.

I need an sbx40000 diffuser. Will the 3000 fit?

No, unfortunately this will not replace the sbx40000 diffuser. That diffuser is no longer available by the manufacturer without a replacement. It may be time for a new pump, something like one of these Hayward TriStar Pumps if you purchase one of these Hayward Northstar to TriStar Riser Bases then you will have no re-plumbing.

Took the pump apart (watched YouTube video from Inyo) and it went smoothly. The pump had been installed with no gaps between the fittings on the suction side of the pump. To replace entire pump would've required buying several new pool valves since there was no way to reattach new pump to existing 2" plumbing. Bought replacement pump seal kit and new impeller and backing plate from Inyo. The diffuser had a hairline crack, but it is the easiest part to replace it just rests in place on the seal plate. Seal plate was also cracked along with the impeller. The impeller was broken off the motor shaft. This is why the pump motor ran but did not move any water. For about $110.00 in replacement parts and about 1-1/2 hour of my labor pump is running smoothly again.

Parts fit perfectly, cost was much less than the local pool outfit wanted for the same items. I performed a major upgrade to my older Haward superpump II saving a lot vs local pool store costs.
