What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I found a model a (Motor 3/4) very close to what I need. So far the only difference is under frame. Mine shows a R56Y and your model shows 56Y. Is that a major factor?

Hello David - This is not an issue. The R56Y and 56Y are the same frame.
Reply
my motor is making too much noise , do I need to change the pump too or just the motor .
Reply
As long as there is no leaks or cracks in the pump housing you should be just fine changing the motor and shaft seal part number (gokit32). Also just double-check the impeller and diffuser and any o-rings you may come across, They should all be round, If any are flat they will need changed.

I have just replace the motor from my pool pump with the B661 from Inyo Pools but when I turned back the electricity the rotor does not turn and all it does is a loud hum. I have removed the motor from the pump and verified that the rotor rotates freely. Does this motor only come with one capacitor inside the top hump? I checked the capacitor with a digital multimeter and it appears to store charge okay. Can you please advise on my next step?

Hi Patrick, Confirm the voltage that the motor is wired for, either 115 or 230 volts. If the motor is wired and set to the correct voltage setting and you're still having problems, let us know and we can get a replacement sent out under warranty.

Should I use this to get energy savings by replacing the motor in my SuperFlo 340038 (1 HP x 1.25 SF), or should I get the 1HP EE instead? Is a variable speed even better? What are approx differences in electric consumption between the three? (25,000 gallon in-ground, pump 2' above water line, and pushes an additional 8' up to solar water heating)
Reply
Hi Sam, You can use this motor verses the B854 to achieve "good" energy savings, a Dual Speed motor B2981T will offer you "better" energy savings and a variable speed motor ECM16SQU will offer you the "best" energy savings. Between all these option you can cut operation cost by 33-80 percent.

Hi Ron, If you live in California then state law requires that you replace your motor with a Variable Speed Motor and you would require this 1.65 HP Variable Speed Motor instead of the single speed motor referenced above. The variable-speed motors will save you roughly 70% on the operational cost of the motor so you will save a ton on your power bill with a variable speed motor. Even if you don't live in California then you may want to consider the Variable Speed Motor Option as the operational cost savings are so big.

Hi John, you are correct. The Title 20 regulations in California require you to change your old B2661 motor to a dual-speed motor like this 115 volt B2981, this 220 volt B2980, or this variable-speed ECM16SQU. The variable-speed motors can really save you on your electric bill when they are set up properly. Let us know what the model of the pump is that the motor attaches to so we can help you choose a new motor shaft seal or Tune-Up Kit to ensure a leak-free installation.

011512, motor model 196232.I have a Pentair Whisperflo WFE-3 .75HP pump/motor. Model #011512 and Motor #196232. I noticed there are 2 replacement motors on this site that could work as a replacement for my pump: B2661 and B2847V1. Would both of these work as a direct replacement for my existing motor? What is the difference between these 2 motors on your site? Thanks!
Hello. Both Century Motors models B2661 and B2847V1 are compatible replacement motors for the Pentair WhisperFlo model 011512, motor model 196232. The B2661 is a 0.75 HP Full Rate Energy Efficient, 1.25 THP (total horsepower) Square Flange Motor. The B2847V1 is a 0.75 HP Full Rate Standard Efficiency, 1.24 THP Square Flange Motor. The primary difference between the two motors is the rated amperage draw (electricity used), the B2661 utilizing less current @ 230V/115V. The cost differential B2661 vs B2847V1 ($21.00) would be realized in energy savings in approx. 2 1/2 months based on an 8 hr/day run schedule.

Hello Blake. The Century 3/4 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate EE Motor - B2661 is a compatible replacement motor for the Pentair WhisperFlo 011512. The Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32 contains the seal and gaskets necessary for the new motor installation. Attached please find the Pentair Whisperflo Pump exploded parts diagram for reference.

I have a WF-3 (3/4 hp) that is my spa recirculation pump. Original motor seized 2 years ago after I purchased house and had a pool guy replace it just to get it fixed, he put 1.5 hp motor on it. I'm looking for a EE motor so based upon this info is the B661 the correct motor for my pump?
