This heat pump is labeled for an in-ground pool. Can it also be used for an above ground pool?
Reply
Yes, this heat pump can be used with an above ground pool. You just have to ensure that it is wired correctly. It needs a 60 amp dedicated circuit breaker and has to be wired directly to the circuit breaker box.
Reply
If I have a large pool pump will I need to have a flow meter for the heat pump?
Reply
According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Can a heat pump be installed indoors?
Reply
Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.
Reply
Can a heat pump be installed under a deck?
Reply
No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

I am replacing a Hayward HP21002, are the fittings for inflow and outflow the same size and same location on the HP21104T or will plumbing need modification?

The plumbing would be the same size and the ports are few inches off from the old location so there would be some slight plumbing modification
Reply
Can the heat pump be turned on and left on with a pool pump that is switched off at night with a timer? Will the heat pump sense the no flow and take care of itself? Is this an acceptable way to operate the heat pump?
Reply
Yes you can install it that way, The heat pump has a sitch that will turn off the heat pump if there is not enough water flow. If you have any further questions please feel free to reply to this email. In addition, you may view the entire ticket history or enter a response by visiting the link below.

How well does the heat pump stand up to the chlorine in the water? As a heat pump, is it required to bury piping in the ground to transfer heat?
Reply
Don, The heat pump will be able to withstand recommended chlorine levels (1-3 ppm). You will also want to monitor pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness as those levels can corrode the "guts" of the heat pump. The plumbing does not need to be buried as a majority of your pool plumbing is already buried.
Reply
Unit is flashing "P5". What does this mean?
Reply
The heat pump is actually displayng "PS" which stands for pressure switch. Either there is not enough water flow or the switch is bad. Bypass the filter to possibly increase the flow and test. If it is resolved then it is a filter issue. If not then it is the switch itself.

Can I install this unit next to an outside air conditioner compressor unit. Will this affect any of the efficiency of the unit or what it actually improve the efficiency due to the fact that the AC compressor unit blows out hot air.
Reply
Enoc, A minimum of 2 feet (.6 m) of clearance from walls, shrubbery, equipment, etc. is required around the entire heat pump. This allows for ample air intake. A minimum of 6 feet (2 m) of clearance above the heat pump is required to prevent re-circulation of air. I would consult a licence HVAC contractor about how the units efficiency is affected by each other.

Hi Crissy, You will definitely want to make sure you have proper ventilation on all sides of the heat pump. Proper ventilation for this model is 24" of clearance on all sides of the heater. This heat pump would be great for a 10,000 gallon pool.

Hi. I need to replace an older H-Series Millivolt 250 Propane. I live in TN. Pool size 32 X 15. Would the the Heat Pro be a recommendation for this area and pool size? Also considering a newer H-Series 250. Thanks in advance.
Reply
Hi Brian, Yes the 110,000 BTU Heat Pro would be adequate for you size pool. The benefit to the heat pump will be that it will cost much less to heat your pool over a gas heater. The downside to the heat pump is that it takes a little longer to heat the pool water over gas and once the outside temp. drops below 50 degrees they are inefficient. I actually have a heat pump and a gas heater on my pool and 99% of the time I use the heat pump and not the gas heater, so a heat pump would be my recommendation.

HAYWARD POOL MODEL HP21104T IS FLASHING CODE P-5 WHAT IS THE CAUSE.
HOW DO I FIX IT
Reply
This code means that the pressure switch itself is bad or the water flow is low. Start with cleaning and or removing the filter then testing to see if after that the flow increases. Also make sure that there are no turned valves bypassing flow through the unit. There could be a number of reasons that water flow decreases but start there and if that does not solve it, move to testing potential pump issues.

The Pentair Ultra Temp, 460935, is a great model for the price as well as the RayPak, 013336. That is not a problem. I use to live in Coachella Valley which is the desert just like Las Vegas and I had a heat pump/chiller for my pool which is what I would recommend. This allows for ample air intake. A minimum of 6 feet (2 m) of clearance above the heat pump is required to prevent re-circulation of air. I live in Tucson AZ and am looking to use a heat pump from may-sept.
pool is 16,000 gallons, 480 surface area.
I think the correct heat pump is the Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 110,000 BTU - HP21104T
What is your opinion?

The product page says this is 110k BTU, but the photos say HP50TA, which is a 50k BTU unit. Which one is it?
Reply
Hello, the HP21104T is a 110k BTU unit, the picture is just to give you an example of model numbers and description of how label will look.

Do new pool heat pumps come PRE-CHARGED? also if i (consumer) does install..(i am electrician) ..will it void any warranty? thanks for assistance
Reply
Hi, Pete. These units do come pre-charged. The unit has to be installed by a licensed professional. Since you're an electrician you can do that part but not the plumbing portion.

I bought the hayward heat pump and turned it on to start heating the pool and it has not raised in temperature from 64 degrees. The setting is at 80 degrees, is there something I need to do?
Reply
Hi, Gabe. I would recommend contacting Hayward at 908.355.7995 so that they can send a technician out to check out the unit to find out why it's not heating if an error code is not displayed.

Hi. Our Hayward heat pump pool filter Model No. HP2100TCO2 has served us well for 12 (+/-) years, but the fan has become annoyingly loud. Any merit in refurbishing? Or just replace?

I have a 12 X 30 pool which averages 4.5 ft deep. It has a baja deck which is only about 2.5 ft deep and measures 8 X 8. I have a sola cover for it. I live in AZ and get full sun most of the day the way the pool is located. I want to maintain the pool about 85 degress and I would like to extend my swimming season to at least 10 months out of the year. Would this 110K unit be the best one for me?
Reply
Hi Russ, since you are wanting to do this for 10 months out of the year then I would suggest a larger unit like the Hayward 140,000 BTU Heat Pump

Hi, Michael. This unit requires a 50 or 60 amp 230 volt breaker and would be able to keep your pools at 85 degrees during the supper months.

What size hearted is needed for a 16 by 32 inground pool?
Reply
Hi. This heat pump can be used to heat a 16' x 32' inground pool, however, geographical location, desired pool temp, and runtime will determine the size of the unit you need.
Reply
Is this pump all electric and can I use this for an above ground pool?
Reply
Hi. This Heat Pump does require a 50/60 amp 230 volt electrical connection and can be used to heat an above ground pool.

My heat pump is not running and flashing LP which I looked up and is the Low Pressure switch. Does the switch need to be replaced or are there other things we can do first to try to fix it?

Christine, There are a few causes for the LP error. Page 4 of the troubleshooting guide will walk you through what to look for.

I'm in Mesa, AZ with approx 15-16k inground pool and just bought the 50k Hayward heat pump and it works but I am worried it might not be enough for the spring and fall. I may return it (locally) and try buying from you guys but I'm not sure what size I should get. 110, 125, 140. I already have the plumbing for the square design but it's not a big deal to change it. I would like to be able to swim march-November. Ambient temps are 70-80's in march and November. Thanks!

Does pump turn on automatically at 32 degrees? Pump was off but Turned on with very cold weather this morning.
Reply
Hi, Jim. The heat pump will turn on when the main pump turns on. If you have freeze protection then the pump will turn on when the temperature drops to freezing, however, this heat pump will not operate at 32 degrees.
Reply
I currently have solar and natural gas heat. Would it be worth my time and money to switch out to an electric heat pump? I would need the 110k since my pool is 14,100 gallons.
Reply
Hello, heat pumps are a lot more efficient than gas heaters and have much lower operating costs, but they only work well in temperatures over 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

How quiet is this unit when running ? For comparison, the Aquacal is rated at 55db. Also, which is the better unit overall - the Hayward of the Aquacal ?
Reply
Hello, Hayward does not list the exact decibel of these units, but the HeatPro-Brochure implies that these units are under 60 dB. In comparison, they are both great units, but the warranty on the Aquacal is better depending on what state you are located in.

What is the part that looks like a nut on the elbow of the return pipe? What does it mean when this part is spurting water? Many Thanks, Leslie
Reply
Hi, Leslie. I'm not sure what part you're referring to. If water is squirting out if it, it has cracked. Use the HP21104T Part Diagram to point out the part you're talking about and where the water is leaking from.

I have an HP21002 from June 2005. It is not heating the water. I think it is time for a new unit. What is the best same replacement for this unit? The installation should be easy if it is a complete replacement. I live on Long Island, NY. I have a 16x40 inground.
Reply
Hi Dianne, If you are replacing an HP21002 then this HP21104T would be the best and closest replacement. The installation should be pretty straightforward and easy since you are replacing an existing heat pump.

Could I install this unit within an existing Pool Shed? I have a ~8 x 8 pool shed where my Pool pump/filter is currently housed and have plenty of room to install this near the pump. Since this is not a natural gas heater that would emit heat, is there any risk to installing this within a vented wooden shed?
Reply
Placement / Clearances All criteria given in the following sections reflect minimum clearances. However, each installation must also be evaluated, taking into account the prevailing local conditions such as proximity and height of walls and public access areas. The heat pump must be placed to provide clearances on all sides for maintenance and inspections. 1. A minimum of 24 in [61 cm] of clearance on all sides. 2. If the heat pump is to be installed under a cover or vertical overhang, the unit must have a minimum of 72 in. [183 cm] of clearance from the top of the heat pump to the bottom of the cover or overhang. 3. Install the heat pump a minimum of 60 in. [1.5 m] from the inside wall of the pool, spa, solid fence, or permanent barrier

I have a 20,000 gallon in ground pool. My Hayward HP21002 is shot. Will this heat the water eefficiently and an easy replacement as far as the water piping and electrical? It looks like the same height and piping as the 21002.

I presently have a 110k BTU on my 16x36x4ft pool....would it be worth replacing with the 140K BTU or just go with another 110k BTU??

Considering the pride difference not being too drastic I would go with the 140k. It will heat the water quicker hence putting less strain on the unit.

What is the normal life expectancy HP211047? I am on my second unit in 10 years. The first unit developed a leak in the coil two days after the warranty expired. Hayward went ahead and replaced it but would not give me a warranty on the replacement. Now the replacement unit has developed a rusted connection on the heat exchanger. I'm told by the Hayward Tech that it would be cheaper to replace the unit rather than repair it. Not so sure I want to replace it with another Hayward.
Reply
Rick, It is difficult to say as there are a lot of factors that can play a role in life expectancy. On average, I would say 5-10 years depending on usage and maintenance.

is this a suitable replacement for Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump HP21002. Hoping to find the exact "plug and play" replacement so I can replace the old unit without much heartache.

will the pump turn on automatically when the outdoor temperature gets to freezing or below?
Reply
Hello Ron, this unit does not have any built-in freeze protection. Because of this, I would recommend properly winterizing your pool if it is not in use during the colder months. However, if you do use your pool during these times, you could get a timer with a freeze protector that will turn your pump on once the temperature gets low enough. This product can be found here.

Hi Bob yes this is common and it is normally condensation, not a leak. We do cover this exact topic in one of our recent "Pool Side Chat Videos" I would highly recommend watching this Video on Is My Heat Pump Leaking or is it Condensation the video goes through exact steps you can take to confirm that this is condensation and not a leak. Hi. PS on the display is an indication of an open water pressure switch. Though water pressure switches occasionally fail, the majority of PS errors are water flow related. Try cleaning out your filter to make sure you have sufficient water flow.

Hi, Kathy. It could be a faulty circuit board, capacitor, sensor etc. A start-up sequence diagnostic will need to be done. Review pages 18-20 of the HeatPro-Installation Manual - HP2xxxxT-HP2xxxxBT to determine what is causing the unit not to come on.
