When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
Reply
On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

Is this filter large enough to handle a 40,000 gallon in ground pool? If not which Haywood would be?

Hello Kevin - The S244T would not be sufficient for a 40,000 gallon pool. We would recommend the Hayward S310T2.

This is the part number that matches to the site glass for that Multi-port valve. SPX0710MA I know that it once was glass, but I believe they have now switched to plastic. To be 100% sure, may I suggest giving Hayward Tech a call at 908-355-7995.

David, The valve on your old Ranger sand filter and the valve on this Hayward Sand filter ports are on the same side, but can't say for sure if it will match up exact. Some adjustment might be needed or you may also need to replumb in this filter.

When our filter system was initially installed we bought a 1 hp. Super Pump to go with our S244T filter. The pool size is 16 X 32. I need to replace the pump and would like to know if I can use the 1.5 hp. Super Pump with this filter? Would there be any benefit to increasing the pump capacity?
Reply
Mike, The flow rate of the Super Pump 1.5hp will be too much for that model sand filter. With everyone wanting to save money, conserve energy and Utilities Companies offering rebates on energy saving pumps, there is no benefit to increase the hp other that you will circulate the water faster. In doing that you're spending more money to do so.

what model lateral are need in this
Reply
Hi Joe. This filter has two styles of laterals depending on the age of the filter: for S244T filters age 2004 and prior you need the threaded laterals [p# SX240D]; for S244T filters after 2004, you need the pivot style laterals [p# SX240DN].

sand from the filter is coming back into my pool. what is wrong

Sand coming back into the pool could be caused by a damaged multiport valve gasket, laterals in the filters, or the laterals aren't sitting correct.

Mike, The only way to fix the leak on your S244T Sand Filter with Top Mount Valve 24 Inch Tank would be to replace the tank/entire filter. The filter is under pressure so every fix you do to it will be temporary

Hi Dan, You would first need to determine the feet of head of your pool, then base of that info determine the gpm the pump have will produce base off of the feet of head. Then compare the gpm to the filter's flow rate capacity. All this info can be found in our How To: Size a Pool Filter guide.

Hi Lolo, There are no specialized hoses that you need to purchase to hook this filter up to a pump. Normally you would just use rigid pvc pipe or flex hoses you can purchase at a local hardware store. The Hayward sp2610x15 1.5 hp is a good fit and I also like the PureLine Pure Water 1.5 HP Pump.

Hi Flor, This filter will be able to filter 25,350 gallons of water in a 8 hour period. You will need a 1 or 1.5hp pump depending on what type of pump you get and or if you have any water features. Here are a few options: Pentair WFE-4, Hayward SP3210EE.

I have a S244t, it was not filtering, I replaced the valve, the sand with bright light and added 32 gal of liquid chlorine over a week and nothing is happening. The pressure gage shows no increase in pressure, when I back wash the water is not particularly dirty, the pool is deep green and getting greener. What would cause the filter to just recirculate?

Sounds to me like you have an air leak in either or pump or your plumbing that is not allowing you to get any pressure.

2 questions on replacement sand.
1. Is #20 sand the same as 20 mesh sand (#30 = 30 mesh)?
2. The specs say 300lb of sand, .018-.021 in (.45 - .55mm) in size.
As far as I can determine, this is 30 mesh sand. All the pool sands (silica) seem to be #20, which would be larger diameter (somewhere around .03 in, .8 mm). The larger #20 sand won't filter as small as #30.
Is there #30 pool sand available?
Reply
Ed- Unfortunately I've never heard of the #30 or 30 Mesh. But all I can tell you is that the MFG states clearly that they only want you to use #20 silica, so using a different size sand could void the warranty.

Hi, Frederick. Yes, this Hayward Sand Filter (S244T) is a great replacement for the Sta-Rite 240BP-1 filter. Other than the sand and plumbing the filter will include everything for installation. The S270T filter will be better because it will offer a higher filtration area which will increase water flow and efficiency.

Reply
Hi, Gordon. The S244T filter has a max flow rate of 62 GPM which based on the info you provided the pump is generating more flow than the filter can handle. You will need the S270T filter or convert your pump to a dual or variable speed pump to cut your electricity usage and flow rate down.

Hello Thomas- Have sand or media going back into the pool is an indicator of one of two things: either the laterals are damaged or when the valve was reassembled it wasn't set on the standpipe snug and is allowing media back in.

I have a Hayward S244T sand filter which is splitting at the seam, anyone else ever have this issue? Can the tank be purchased separately?

The seam failure is not a typical issue unless the filter is really old and or there is too much pressure within the filter. The part number for the tank is 4802-72C. Most often that it best to replace the entire filter.

I keep getting a lot of air in my S224T sand filter and it takes a long time (over 8 minutes) to prime. Also get a large backpressure of water coming out of the filter when i turn off the pump. I have been told that the air bleed screen/filter may be plugged. Does the S244T have such a thing and if so where is it located?

The model s244t does not have an air relief within it. Please check out our "How to determine why a pool pump won't prime" guide which may assist with troubleshooting your pump priming issue.

Even though I had backwashed my filter several times without seeing any improvement I decided to change the sand (300 lbs.). Problem solved. No more backpressure buildup and priming now takes about 30 seconds to reach full flow. Pressure gauge still at same 15psi regardless of whether it’s new or old sand. Tried a new gauge and still showing 15psi.

I have this sand filter and valve. It's about 4 years old. I replaced my 2 hp motor last year with a 3 hp variable speed motor. The valve on top has a crack on the side that leaks when it runs. Hi, Michael. The size pumps that are being used could be too powerful for this size filter if it exceeds the flow rate of 62 GPM. That specific part or the complete valve will have to be replaced.

Michael, Flow Rate is calculated base on the pump and the pool's Total Dynamic Head (TDH).

I have a s244t Hayward sand filter. Can I replace the pump with a 2hp instead of 1.5hp?
Reply
Maybe - but probably not. The pump should be sized to the filter to ensure they work well together to keep your pool clean. The S244T filter has a maximum flow rating of 62 gallons per minute. Unless you have a lot of feet of head in your setup most 2HP pumps will be too strong and can over-pressurize and overwhelm your filter.
