What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

The 1.5 HP 56J Thrd Full Rate Motor does not come with a toggle switch and cover, you will need the 2 Speed Toggle Switch (79129900).

I want to confirm the replacement motor for AO Smith SP1615-Z-2-BC 2 speed 1.5 - 2 HP. Do I need a tune up kit?

We would strongly recommend a Tune Up Kit when replacing your motor. You would just need to know which manufacture and model of pump you have, you should be able to find your Tune Up Kit on your Tune Up Kit Page.

I need the pump tune up kit that goes with my pump. All info if gone from the case. The motor is a AO Smith B977,56J frame. The pump has 2" inlet and discharge. The case seal fits into a circular groove. Thank you for any help, Robert

Unfortunately I'd need the model of the pump to find the correct seal kit for your pump.

Hi, Bill. The reasons you've listed can lead to the problem that you're having. You can take the motor to a shop so that it can be tested to confirm which one is the culprit.

Is the B2977 motor interchangeable with the STS 1152R? The only difference I found is the lower speed horse power, 0.2 hp compared to 0.25 for the STS. The B2977 seems to be a newer model. I have Hayward pump SP4010X152 and need to replace the motor. Thanks

This two motor are going to be the same, the STS1152R is just going to be the newer model.

Hi, Steve. Yes, this B977 motor will fit the Hayward Super II Pump housing. The physical dimensions are the difference between the two motors.

I bought this motor from INYO to replace B977. All is OK except the terminal box cover is a different design and appears not to be compatible with the hi/lo switch which you recommend, P/N 5271-75 (17590450). The new terminal box cover is plastic. The old design was metal and had a hatch that could be replaced with the hi-lo switch assembly. I am currently using the motor in single speed mode. Do you have a suggested solution for this problem?

Hi, Ronan. Century had a motor design change. You will need the Toggle Switch and Canopy Kit - 2512558-001. A return will be set up so that you return Part #17590450. You will have to purchase the Toggle Switch and Canopy Kit - 2512558-001

Hi, replacing pump motor SP -1615- z2- mc. The unit I have states 2 hp and this one appears to be 1.5 hp? Is there a model change since I replaced the last time?

A  Answered on 7/2/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi. This B2977 is a 1.5 HP Full Rate motor. It has a service factor of 1.3, when you multiply the 1.5 HP x 1.3 SF = 1.95 THP. The motor rating is different, however, the operating performance is not different.

You will need a way to switch the high and low speeds. The switch is part number 17590450. You'd also want to replace the pump seals when you replace the motor. What is the make and model of the pump side? If you are unsure, send us a picture of the complete pump.

I am confused about square flange versus round flange. Does the square flange take the place of the square motor mounting plate that is part of the pump (Hayward Part SPX1600F5 for example)?

Hello.  The End Bell design of any given motor identifies it as a round (sometimes referred to as a C face) or square flange variety.  Attached please find several pictures which may help clarify the difference.  In answer to your question, no, the square motor mounting bracket does not allow for a change in the End Bell design.  AOS Shaft End Bell Round Flange 203 Bearing (SAW-60        Motor ,Two Compartment C-Face Keyed 1.5HP Sgl Spd    115/230V (SK1152)     Shaft End Bell, Sq.flange (203) (saw-49)       Century 3/4 HP Square Flange 48Y Up Rate Motor - USQ1072
