What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Hello Stephanie, The seals that will be used with the 5211x Motor 56j Thrd Up 1 Hp (b228se) would be determined by the model of your pump. Do you know what the model of your pump is?

Hi ...I bought 5211X from you last year and it was fine, but it will not start this year. It turns freely by hand ... I replaced hot wires coming from switch .... it is getting power (used voltage detector to confirm) .... no hum or anything ... I switched the capacitor from an old pump with same results ... nothing helps ... any ideas I could try? ....... Thanks ... Jay

Hi, Jay. Based on your description of what you have done, it sounds like the motor is dead.

I bought a B228SE motor last year and this after trying to oprn my pool the motor runs for about 10 minutes and shuts off. Motor appears to over heat.

It is possible that the impeller that you are using with the motor is rated for a higher horse power one. This would be a heavier design and can be straining the motor. Please confirm the part number on the impeller is the one needed to be used with that motor.

Two years ago we had our pool motor (B228SE) replaced. During the beginning of May of this year we turned on the filter system to get the pool ready for summer. At the Beginning of June the motor started to make a lot of noise but it still ran. Our neighbors complained about the nose so we had it replaced again. The first motor lasted about 7 years. The resent replacement lasted two seasons of 6 months each. How long should your motors last?
Reply
These motors are original A.O. Smith/Century motors and average a life expectancy of approximately 3-7 years. There may be other variables that contribute to a motor failing prematurely. You may want to have a technician inspect the system to see if there are other factors involved.

Hi, is this motor the exact same as the one we have in the photo attached?
It seems like everything is matching except for 1 number, but I'm guessing it's just a newer model.
If it is the same, do you sell the entire setup with impeller and parts already assembled so all we have to do is just replace the one we have with the new one? Thank you.
Hi Matthew, the pump parts do not come with the motor already installed unless you were to purchase a completely new pump that will need to be plumbed in. If you need that can you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the model? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

What direction does this motor spin, and is it reversible?
I bought this motor recently as an exact replacement of my existing motor, and the new one spins counter-clockwise (when looking at the front shaft). To remove the impeller, you also spin the impeller counter-clockwise, which doesn't make sense to me, as the motor is spinning in the same direction as what is needed to remove the impeller. Am I missing something?

The Century 1.0 HP Round Flange 56J Up Rate Motor - B228SE is CCW Rotation facing the opposite shaft end. It is not reversible.

Hello Leonard. The Century 1.0 HP Round Flange 56J Full Rate EE Motor - B128 or the Century 1.5 HP Round Flange 56J Up Rate Motor - B229SE would be incrementally higher in total horsepower compared to the B228SE.

motor /pump very noisy. I looked for way to lubricate motor and could not find lubrication port. Can the Century B228SE
0-184981-23 be lubricated?
Is there a more modern quiter running motor?
Reply
Hello Randal. Excessive motor noise is typically the result of motor shaft bearing wear. The motor shaft bearings would require replacing. There is no procedure to lubricate a pool pump motor, the B228SE included. A new conventional single-speed motor would run quieter than the current motor. The V-Green 1.65 HP Round Flange 56J Variable Speed Motor - ECM16CU is a quieter option than a new B228SE motor. 5 Reasons To Get A Variable Speed Pool Pump Motor
