What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Hi Kevin, You would require this 1 HP Dual Speed Replacement Motor. As far as the gaskets go we would need for you to reply back to our email letting us know the model of pump you have (i.e. Pentair Whisperflo, Sta-Rite DuraGlas, Sta-Rite Max-E-Glas, etc..)

Can I replace the Centurion pool pump Part #7-177080-24 with #B2841 and B2848?
I didn't see on the B2841 web page that it's compatible to 7-177080-24.
What's the difference between B2841 and 841, B2848 and 848?
Reply
Yes the 7-177080-24 can be replaced with either B2841 or B2848. The B2841 is the energy efficient version and the B2848 is the standard version. The B2841 and B841 are the same motor the B2841 is just the newest part # but some motor still have B841 on them so that's why we list both #'s.

Hi all, I have a Century Centurian 1 HP pool pump, #177450 . I wanted to calculate the energy it uses per day to determine if I can replace it with a more efficient pump. 115V X 14.8A = 1702 W. If the pump runs for 4 hours/day, can I say that my energy use per day is 1.7Kw x 4 hrs = 6.8 kph? What pump will most drastically reduce my energy usage today? Thanks!

Peter, If you are looking at reducing energy costs, I would recommend a variable speed pump. Reducing the rpm's, will help save on energy costs. Please note that the variable speed pump run at 230/240v. You can view the variable speed pumps we carry here.

Hi,
I need t replace the Motor of a Pentair Wisperflo:
Pump Model # WF-26
Part # 011773
Motor # 177475
Hp 1.5
S.F. HP 1.65
Questions:
1) Mine says 1.5 HP with Total HP 1.65. Will this model that is 1 HP (less) but same total HP 1.65 work? I also see that the description of B2842 (also a 1 HP) mentions my Motor # 177475, but this one does not.
2) Can I get this one in Almond color? So it matches the pump?
Reply
Hi, Joe. Based on your pump model and info, you can use the B2841 (energy efficient) or B2848 (standard). The Pentair OEM Motor - 071314S is the almond color motor for the WF-26 pump.

Our pool company hooked the pool sweep up to the pool pump recently, and now the pump has burned out. It's a Pentair Whisper flo 1.65 pump. Should the replacement pump motor be 1 hp or 1.5 for a 20 gal. pool...or more since it's trying to run the polaris pool sweep too?

The replacement motor for a Whisperflo with a total horsepower of 1.65 is the 1 HP Motor EE - Full Rate (B2841, B2841V1). You will also need the shaft seal assembly or tune-up kit, that you can find by clicking here. The horsepower is determined by the gallons of the pool and other areas. Hi, Wolfgang. The B2841 motor you currently have will provide you with the same total horsepower as the B2854 using less energy. That's because the B2841 is a full rate motor with a high service factor. When you multiply the rated hp by the service factor you get the total permissible horsepower.

Hello,
I'm just about to order a new B2841 Century Motor 1HP motor and I'm wondering if there is any advantage to upgrading to a 1.5 HP.
I'm happy with the 700 Gal bed 5 jet spa hooked up to a 250 BTU Pentair Heater and a blower but that little extra power of water to help the tired body after a hard days work maybe good or not so good. Saying that, I don't want to be be surfing the waves either.
Thanks for your input
Reply
Hello Glenn-When upgrading the motor size you have to take a couple things into consideration. The first would be whether or not your filter can handle the additional flow rate by the higher HP. The second being that you will need to change the impeller and possibly diffuser on the pump. The only advantage to going to a higher HP would be to increase the waterflow. But keep in mind it will use more energy as well.

Hi, HGC. Since you're in California, your replacement options will be the B2982 - Dual Speed Motor or the ECM16SQU - Variable Speed Motor. The variable speed option will provide you with a wider operation selection allowing you to maximize your energy savings and functionality over the dual speed motor which will require an external controller or switch. Whichever option you choose, I will also recommend that you get the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

Hi, Alex. Since you're in California you can replace your motor with a single speed motor, you can only use a Dual Speed - B2982 or Variable Speed - ECM16SQU. You will also need the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

Is this the best motor to replace a USQ1102? The original motor looked like this and lasted 15 years. I've been through 2 in the last 5 years. They run extremely hot and I also wondered if a higher HP motor (1.5 vs 1) would last longer. I have a 20 circuit so should be OK.
Reply
Hi, Pete. This B2841 is a suitable replacement for the USQ1102 motor. It hard to say without knowing what caused the other motors to fail prematurely. Worn pump parts like the impeller, diffuser, high/low voltage, improper ventilation etc can cause a motor to run hot.

Hi, Bob. They're a few options as far as an upgrade based on what you want to do. You can use this B2841V1 along with the impeller to increase the pump's water flow or just running a higher hp motor.
Reply
The current (dead) pump is just a 3/4 HP, the one you suggest is 1 HP, so I assume this would be an upgrade with water flow. What is included in the gasket kit, etc?

Hi, Bob. The direct replacement to your original motor is Part # B2661. The seals are specific to the pump housing which we will need from you.

Hi, Looking to replace my pump motor.
The label reads Centurion SE, Part number: 8-186468-01, HP 1.5, RPM 3450, FR: Y56Y, TYPE: CX, CODE: F, TIME: CONT
I notice this is only a 1-HP motor. Would this be a proper replacement for what I currently have and would going from 1.5HP to 1HP decrease any performance? My primary reason to replace the motor for a newer energy efficient and hopefully cheaper electric bill. The current motor is at least 20 years old. Other options appricated
Hi Barry. This B2841V1 is the correct replacement motor. You will not lose performance because this 1 HP Full Rate motor has a Total HP (THP) of 1.65. Replacing your existing motor with either a Dual Speed - B2982 or a Variable Speed - ECM16SQU are your highest energy efficient options.
Reply
Additional question: The EMC16SQU your recommending above has a frame style of 48Y. Will this fit, my frame is a Y56Y?
Reply
Hi, Barry. Yes, it will. The 48Y Frame motor includes a spacer that will allow it to fit.

Dear,
Can I replace/upgrade my broken motor (see photo) with this one? My current set up is 1.5 inch Pipe ID, with cartridge filter can stand 120 GPM flow rate. TIA.
Best,
Kevin
Hello Kevin, the correct direct replacement motor used on your pump is the motor model B853. If you're wanting to increase the strength of your pump the wisest approach is to use a variable speed pump as the original licensed pool contractor specked out your specific build for a single speed pump. In your case the variable speed motor replacement is the ECM16SQU. We also recommend replacing the seals and gaskets when replacing a pool pump motor. Here is our "Finding the Tune-Up Kit for Your Pool Pump" guide that should assist in locating that.
